Hotsyncing with the Visor can be a pain: it takes a long time and it's sometimes dificult to get the Visor to sit it's in cradle. When you want to put files from your Visor onto the computer, there's no alternative, but if you're just backing up files, this module is excellent. You press one button, wait a minute, and everything is backed up. This is especially important because I've found that replacing batteries in the Visor sometimes deletes the data. Restoring from the backup module is then a one step process. Retoring from hotsync would first entail reinstalling all of the software and then hotsyncing the data. It's a little pricey and is something of a luxury, but it makes life much easier, especially if you're on the go.I hot sync with a backup buddy already. However, I travel quite a bit, and this neat little module is just the best. It is very easy to use. . . simply put in the slot and tap an icon. . . and then you have a backup with you at all times, even when you can't get to your desktop.Want Handspring 8mb Backup Springboard Module for Visor Deluxe, Neo, Platinum and Prism Discount?
Everything should be this easy. You put the module in the slot and tap the backup icon,And,it does it amazing!!!!!!I love this product.I brought this module years ago to backup my visor, especially since I did not own a computer at the time. It was a lifesaver, allowing me to restore everything upon replacing batteries. There were a few times I misplaced the visor in the house and (of course two months or so later) once I found it the batteries were completely dead. The backup module restored everything perfectly.Sunday, July 27, 2014

Iriscan Book 2 Executive
- Send your scans via Bluetooth on your Smartphone, tablet PC, laptop
- Scan everywhere without computer
- Readiris will automatically convert your paper documents and image files into text files
I do not think it would have killed the manufacturer to provide "dumbed down" instructions for idiots with IQs under 164, like me.
Anyway, here is what I figured out. These instructions are for the Mac. I shudder to think what you Windoze people will have to go through.
First, you need to set up the device for recognition by the Mac's Bluetooth. You only have to do this once, through "System Preferences > Bluetooth". Easy enough: just make sure the scanner is set to "BT".
Then for anything that you want to scan:
1) Turn on scanner to "Scan"
2) If desired, set color ("C/BW") and DPI ("LOW/HIGH") with switches on side of scanner to appropriate settings
3) Put scanner on item to be scanned, click the "SCAN" button once to start (Green SCAN LED should come on)
4) Move the scanner slowly on the item to be scanned.
5) When finished scanning, click the "SCAN" button again: green SCAN LED will turn off.
6) Slide scanner's button to "BT"
7) On computer's menu bar, select "Handy Scanner > Browse Device"
8) In the "Browsing..." window, select the file you want to transfer by double-clicking on it. It will ask you for a destination.
This device is absolutely indispensable when you want to scan something where a standard flatbed scanner is impractical, like your local public library.
I've had plenty of experience with "handheld scanners" back in the late '80s. This product is a glorious "step up".
Buy Iriscan Book 2 Executive Now
I just purchased this product after using and enjoying the IRIS digital pen. This product simply works wonders for capturing any information out of bound source material. I am into genealogy and had been searching for a portable scanner that I could bring with me when doing research. This product not only grabs the info and pictures I want but allows me to take the text and turn it into an editable Word document allowing me to copy/paste into Rootsmagic saving me tons of time. It came with an SD memory card large enough to hold hundreds of scans with room to spare and once I get a Blutooth adapter for my PC I am sure that feature will come in handy for transferring/printing the scans wireless. If you are looking for a great rechargeable portable scanner and don't wish to lug your laptop this may be an option for you.Read Best Reviews of Iriscan Book 2 Executive Here
First, the instructions are the worst I have ever encountered for any electronic product I have ever bought. They have put all their effort into providing as many languages as possible into one tiny booklet.Second, the customer is not warned before the purchase that there is no good way to scan a bound book created with letter-sized pages. The non-scanning ends are simply too big. That's what I bought it for. By the time I had traveled to the library that had the rare book, it was too late to return the scanner. The 30-day return period starts when you ORDER the scanner, not when you get it.
The image quality is too poor for photographs. My advice is to try a wand scanner before you order it and choose a brand with better documentation and a better return policy.
Want Iriscan Book 2 Executive Discount?
First off the instructions are very scanty; you have to load the software to realize that you should not load it with the scanner not connected. I left the scanner hooked up for over 12 hours and only managed 2 strokes of battery life which disappeared pretty quickly in 5 minutes of use. Trying to get help on the product online is like pulling teeth. Presently i only get a one bar charge and sometimes I think the battery discharges itself. the scanner is not particularly friendly to books (as opposed to single standalone pages) maybe except when the pages between beginning and end are balanced. They're not so helpful either when the pages are double columned (just something I noticed). Right now I don't use it as I imagined but I'll take another shot at it later. Should have I bought a pen type? The bluetooth option along with a reviewer stating it works with their ipad lead me to believe that this scanner would work with my iPad in a similar manner as the camera attachment. (I know it was just wishful thinking on my part) I'll grant you that the description does say "tablet PC" and once you open the instruction booklet, it shows quite clearly that it *will not work with any iOS operating system*.The only way to get your scans into the ipad is to use the camera attachment and insert the microSD card and import them. While this will work, I can buy a much less expensive handheld scanner and transfer via SD card.
I also had a 50/50 result with the actual scans performed. I'm sure over time that it would have gotten better but as I said, due to the price for what it does, it will be going back. I'm going to try out the Wolverine PASS200 Handheld Portable Documents, Books and Photo Scanner instead. As of this review, it's $50 cheaper and also scans to a microSD card.

iConcepts IR Keyboard
- A universal wireless keyboard utilizes the infra red port
- Less then 1 inch in thickness
- Easy to set up, easy navigation, and be able to type with ease with the same standard key layout
- Compatible with most PDA
At first, the keyboard would work intermittantly, which was a frustrating experience. After slightly bending ( up, the bottom contacts; in, the side contacts) the button battery contacts and sandwiching a spacer between the positive terminal and the battery cover, the iConcepts keyboard has communicated reliably with my TX. This includes both portrait and landscape modes and upside down (IR arm @ 8:00PM position).
I have lightly lubricated the keyboard slide mechanism and rotating IR arm with silicone dry spray. All pieces slide smoothly and this also takes some rotational pressure off of the PDA stand while rotating the IR arm to the correct position for the PDAs IR eye.
Keys are slightly small for my large fingers, the three piece space key(s) takes a bit to get accustomed to. The placement of the right hand "Shift" key is to the right of the "Up Arrow, Page Up, Scroll" key and I find myself moving up a line rather than capitalizing.
The "Hot Buttons" on top and use of the function key in conjunction with "dual action" keys, allow navigation around the PDA screen without the use of the stylus. The stylus can be stowed in a hole located in the upper right hand corner of the case when needed.
The addition, the included Palm OS 3.0 ~ 4.0 driver allows the use of the keyboard with my Handspring Visor.
Overall, I am quite happy with the iConcepts keyboard after fine tuning.

Mini Rii Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard for Android phone Ipad Sony PS3 Apple MAC Nokia Symbian Eleganc
Further reading on the matter revealed a work-around that may work for some. Uninstall the software and attempt to pair with the standard bluetooth. When prompted for code on the phone, enter "0000" and press "OK" then enter "0000" and press Enter on the phone, which will then allow it to pair& connect for this one session. So far, I have had to do this every time I want to connect the keyboard to my phone.
My recommendation is to avoid this keyboard if you are purchasing it to pair with an Android phone.
UPDATE: After 3 times of having to enter the "0000" stuff each time I connected to my phone, it began connecting OK without it. I'm updating my recommendation to 3 stars. If the customize able software worked to allow programming the function keys, I would give this 5-stars!Perfect, good, the best bluetooth keyboard in my samsung galaxy note. Good and elegance. Rii bluetooth keyboard is the best.

rooCASE Neoprene Sleeve (Black) Carrying Case for Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB Porta
My main complaint is that it does not feel designed for it (and that actually may be). It feels like a kid wearing his dad's suit. It bounces around in it and just feels like they are not meant to be together.
Overall, it definitely does the trick, but I am not really satisfied with it.

MoKo(TM) Vertical Flip Detachable Cover Case for Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet / Nook Color, BLACK
- Designed specifically for Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet / Nook Color (tablet NOT included).
- Detachable inner sleeve for handheld operation; the inner sleeve reattaches to the case by velcro.
- Magnetic closure. Access to all features and controls.
- Simple and stylish adjustable stand for adjustable hands-free reading with portrait and landscape view.
- Clear vision, without any view blocking when you read on your Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet / Nook Color.
I have been through a few returns to Amazon trying to find a case that is minimal, lightweight, and most importantly, supports my Nook Tablet in Vertical/Portrait Orientation for reading.
This case surprised me with its thoughtful design, and I'm keeping it!
Since the Photos in the product description don't do it justice, I will try to explain this thing a little better.
The case can be separated into 2 parts:
Padded Sleeve that fits snugly over the Nook, protects the back, all sides, and pads the frame around the screen. There is a hole in the bottom for easy charging and it's easy to access the memory card slot. Nook is secured snugly by a Velcro tab that tucks in the top. There's a big Velcro patch on the back of the sleeve that attaches to the ...
Rigid, Padded Stand that folds across the bottom and all the way up to protect the screen. This is secured at the top by some light magnets, feels like it won't pop open accidentally but not so strong that I'm worried about my credit cards. In this closed position the Nook is protected completely. When you open the magnetic closure above the Nook's screen, the rigid screen cover becomes a flat surface with 3 ridges to prop your Nook up at different angles. This is the feature I was searching for in other cases, since I use my Nook primarily for reading. If you want to watch a movie you can undo the sturdy Velcro connecting the Stand to the Sleeve, and rotate your Nook, using the stand the same way for Landscape/Sideways Orientation.
The case is made of black fake leather on the outside, and bright orange fake leather on the inside. The orange accents are pretty visible even when the case is closed. It came with a wrist strap too, which I took off right away.
It's lightweight, and does add some thickness to the Nook, but if you detach the Stand and use just the Sleeve, the Nook is slim and protected.
I couldn't be happier with this purchase, and I hope my description helps you make an informed decision!I was really excited to get this case. It looked like the best deal out there. I was a little disappointed when I used it, though. I like that it is a protective case that also serves as a stand for propping up my Nook, and that it works both vertically and horizontally. However, if you are using this case while watching movies or listening to music on the Nook, you have to plug it into larger speakers, because the case completely covers the speaker on the back of the Nook, muffling the sound quite a bit. I had a hard time hearing my music at all with the Nook in the case, and I had it at full volume.
Part of the reason I got this case was so I could prop up the Nook for my son to watch movies, but he can't hear the sound... kind of frustrating :(As some reviewers have already described the product in excellent detail, I'll give you my opinion based on my own experience. I was searching for a cover and stand that would work for my kids' new Nooks. The price point was pefect, since I had to buy two of them and they did not need to be anything especially sleek, just sturdy, lightweight and hardworking. The synthetic leather is of excellent quality. There is no visible glue and the seams are well stitched, I was very impressed with how well it's made. I am confident that they will hold up to the wear of kids under 10 and keep their devices protected. As mentioned by others, the orange accents are visible even when closed, which I think gives it a nice visibility for the kids to keep track of it in their backpacks and also a jazzy look. I also removed the straps, and instead added my own color-coded straps to differentiate the two for each kid. The Velcro is very strong (it's also pretty loud when seperating the stand from the covered device, a consideration for air travel or school use. But a majority of the cases out there with stands also have Velcro, so I would not downgrade the rating for that.) Having the ability to prop up the devices either horizontally or vertically for gaming, reading or watching movies is exactly what I was looking for. Another great feature is that the top flap that is magnetized to protect the screen when closed up actually folds back behind the Nook, so you don't have to seperate the two parts to hold the device in your hands, such as for gaming. This is great for kids: because everything stays together, there is less of a chance of losing the stand part of the case due to having to seperate the stand for handheld use. Altogether, it meets all the criteria I was searching for, and I was impressed with this product.I like the two positions for reading my nook, I can use it either way and with the cover protection, it weighs a lot less than the cover that I got with the nook. This is the third case I've bought for my color nook, and I think it's a keeper! The durability of this case is outstanding. With my toddler taking my "book" to play his games or read his stories, I don't have to worry about him dropping and breaking it. The versatility of the product is even more appealing. That I can turn my nook vertical (for reading) or horizontal (for Angry Birds) is incredibly handy! And I love the stand. I wasn't sure I was going to like this product when purchasing it, but thought I'd try it out. I'm glad that I did. I love it! And it's SF Giants colors too! How can it miss? =)

As others have said this is a great cable lock. I'll try not to repeat what has already been said.SECURITY:
This has "flat" keys but they are not simple keys; their groove pattern is sort of three-dimensional. I don't think you're going to get them duplicated at your local hardware store. Register them at the Kensington web site so you can get them replaced if you lose them.
There are many stories and videos on the web showing how to easily defeat the cylindrical locks that are used on less expensive cable locks but none of that stuff will work here!
CONVENIENCE:
The cable comes with a clip attached to it that keeps the cable coiled neatly when not in use. It is well made and works great. See one of my uploaded images.
Since the clip is permanently attached to the cable this remains a "one piece" solution with no little parts to get lost or separated from the cable lock. ("one piece" except for the keys, of course)
HOWTO:
When I first tried to use this lock it took me a minute and some minor frustration to figure it out so I have uploaded an image and will give a little explanation here. I do notice that a fair number of other reviews also mention some confusion and frustration over the workings of the lock mechanism. I hope the following helps ...
* Always hold the cylinder marked with the "K" lock symbol with one hand while turning the key with the other (see uploaded image). Because the cable attachment provides a more prominent hand-hold it is tempting to hold on to it while turning the key but the cable attachment spins freely and has no relation to the locking mechanism so holding it will not accomplish anything except by chance, leading to confusion. This may be the most important point.
* The uploaded image shows the locking mechanism in the locked position. The key is turned fully counterclockwise. This is the only position in which the key can be inserted or removed. The lock's T-bar will NOT go into nor come out of the slot on the device being protected when in this position.
* To insert the lock's T-bar into the slot you need to first turn the key as far as you can (180 degrees) clockwise. That puts the lock on the unlocked position and allows the T-bar to be inserted into the slot. In the unlocked position the T-bar lines up with the pair of pins forming an overall flat shape that will fit into the slot.
* Once the lock's T-bar is in the slot turn the key as far as you can (180 degrees) counterclockwise. This puts the lock back into the locked position and allows you to remove the key. Be sure the T-bar is fully inserted into the slot before turning the key. If it is not, this is where you might damage the surface or any outer plastic layer of your laptop.
* Take note of the orientation of the key with respect to the T-bar and the T-bar with respect to the pins when it is in both the locked and the unlocked positions. This will help you line things up when inserting the T-bar into the slot. This may be the second most important point.
I'm sure you could figure that out all by yourself but this will give you something to think about and the pictures something to look at while you wait for yours to be delivered!

The Kensington Microsaver DS lock is really good. Right out of the box you can tell its very strong and i feel confident this lock could stop all but the most determined thief from walking away with my laptop. (Given a good amount of time and the right tools any lock can be broken) Notebook locks are, in effect, a visual deterrent. You're average pick up and go with your laptop thief wont bother with trying at it, they'll just move onto something easier. The lock design is really good, much better then the classic design that has videos all over the internet showing how it can be picked with such high-end objects as a piece of cardboard from a toilet roll or a hollowed out ball point pen. The rubber surface where the lock comes in contact with the notebook is definitely a plus, won't be doing any damage to your notebook. The lock itself again, feels and is strong. Definately something you want to look into, I spent a lot of time comparing this to the regular Microsaver one as well. The DS is worth that extra $8 I paid for!Want Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer Lock Discount?
I looked at other locks in stores and did some online research and everything pointed to the MicroSaver DS with keys. While nothing will stop a determined thief I believe this is the best security available. It's well thought out, easy to use, and simply looks tough. It slips into a laptop bag easily yet it's long enough that you'll always be able to find something to attach it to. I use it while travelling and even at home.I look at it this way. Once you realize that there is a device like this available you have to buy it and use it. Otherwise, you have no one to blame but yourself if your laptop is stolen.I just received this today and had it locking down my HP Pavillion dv9000 in about three minutes. Seems to fit the locking slot just fine and does the trick of keeping it locked down so it can't walk away from my desk. Cable is thick and coated, so it won't scratch. One caveat, this thing is NOT light nor does it roll up into a neat little package. By comparison, it's a bit lighter and compact than an old printer cable (before USB). It's the weight factor that knocks off a star.

The case fits perfectly, feels nice and looks good. What more can you really ask for?.. Nothing! :)I've heard some complaints over cases made by fake leather, but to be honest, I can't really feel too much of a difference. I think it's really good, and for a price way lower than many of the competitors, I see no reason for people not to go for this one instead. The stand-function works well, and you can use it in two different angles; i myself prefer the low angle as it is perfect for laying on the table. It's also very nicely fitted and the case feels sturdy without covering up any outputs.
Cons: none so far, will update.

This case is great, it keeps my e-reader protected and I like the hard case. I would recommend this product. The title pretty much speaks for itself. There's not much else I can say about the case other than it probably not being made of real leather, but for the price no one should expect it to be. The other reviewers pretty much covered everything else. It fits just right, and everything is accessible. Not sure about whole dye issue though. Then again I've only had it for a few days. Anyways, if you're looking for a plain and simple case for a low price, then this is for you!Tuesday, January 21, 2014

This case is slightly larger than my Kindle and provides a nice easy fit. The case is soft fabric inside and out, with a rubbery covering over most of the outside. It has a two-way zipper so it opens from either the long or short sides. There is a lip under the zipper that pushes the zipper back when opened to avoid scratching your device -nice touch. The reason I gave only four stars is that I would have liked the sides to be stiffer to provide more protection. As it is, the case is semi-soft and flexible, though reasonably well padded. Considering the price of many other cases, it is a bargain.

AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 )
- Included are a full-size keyboard and a screen that's 3.5 times wider than the typical handheld screen.
- Virtually all Palm applications are compatible with Dana, and many are ready to take advantage of the wide screen.
She composes her writing assignments while sitting in a chair or on a sofa. She uses a lapdesk (that we purchased from Levenger, a mail-order company) when she works on our bed. Needless to say, she loves the Alphasmart Dana because it allows her to use it just like "Daddy's laptop," which she easily prefers over sitting at a desk and typing on a standard PC.
I also use the Alphasmart Dana for my own word processing (to write product reviews such as this one) while I'm waiting for my daughter or her brother at their sports or music practices. I have my own SD memory card to keep my work separate. And I like how I can import the text into a MS Word document open on my computer simply by hooking up a USB cable and hitting the function key marked "send." (Any receiving PC can accept the data and doesn't need to have the Alphasmart Palm desktop installed in order to do so.)
The standard dictionary and spell checker which comes with the Alphasmart Dana is fairly inadequate. I've downloaded the Noah Pro dictionary and thesaurus from PalmGear.com, and both are significantly better.
The formatting capabilities of the Alphaword program have been generally sufficient for most of my daughter's assignments. For those times when an extra level of "prettiness" is required, my wife will normally upload the text to a MS Word file, and format the document accordingly.
Neither my daughter nor I use the other Palm features (such as calendar, address book, to-do list, or memo) that's included. (I use my Palm 515 for those.) We use the Alphasmart strictly as a friendlier, more durable and less expensive version of a laptop computer. In this capacity, the Alphasmart Dana has performed wonderfully.
My daughter now loves to write and does so without any prompting. The Alphasmart Dana has proven to be an excellent investment. I highly recommend it!
Buy AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 ) Now
I am studying a course in Computer Systems at University, I have a desktop in my halls but I wanted a laptop to use in lectures as I have a learning disabilty. I was recommended the Dana by a friend, for the price I think that it is a great piece of kit. The full size keyboard is a joy to type on, and the product itself is ALMOST indestructible (I know this as it gets bashed around in my bag). The widescreen is great when using Alphaword, although in most Palm applications there is a Dana logo on the left of the screen as most applications haven't been converted to run in widescreen. I would recommend purchasing an SD card as you can only store 8 files in the internal memory, which can be a bot of a problem if you are away from your PC and cannot hotsync. Overall this is a well made, cost effective and portable alternative to a laptop for word processing. Therefore, I would recommend this product to anyone.Read Best Reviews of AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 ) Here
I like writing on the go -in coffee shops, book stores, libraries(!), on my bed before I sleep... And my laptop didn't quite cut it because of power and size.I was a little apprehensive before buying the Dana because of dimension (too big and I wouldn't carry it), keyboard (I wanted a laptop feel), and screen (too small would be a problem)
but I am quite satisfied with all of the above.
Dana is light and compact. It is large in form, but no larger than a sub-compact notebook, and certainly much thinner and lighter. I put it in my bag/sack without hesitation.
The keyboard is terrific (looks and feels like an Apple keyboard) and the screen is, while not outstanding, good enough, with a nice backlight. It could be a little bigger -this is the reason I don't give it 5 stars -but I guess the engineers needed to make a trade-off here.
The rechargeable battery lasts a long time, certainly more than enough for lugging around without its charger for a day (and I'm sure it lasts a lot longer than this -just that I haven't tried it for more than a day).
I with the AlphaWord would let me change the default font (I like using Times New Roman and 20 points on the small screen). That would be my only complaint. With the supplied default font, however, I can use it without much difficulty so I am not too upset.
I haven't gotten around to using the Palm features, although I have a Palm Tungsten T so I doubt I ever will. I suspect my use is the sweet spot for the Dana -light word processing on the go. The previous reviewer's comment suggests the same.
Dana's website says that there will be an 802.11b ready version out in the future. This would be a pretty cool addition to an already useful product. As it is, I highly recommend it for people who like writing anywhere.
Want AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 ) Discount?
In General:First I want to make a disclaimer. I sell a lot of these on Amazon Marketplace. I also use one on a daily basis. This review was written on my Dana. It is so light and portable that I bring my Dana with me almost everywhere, in my car, on my walks, in the subway, on my bicycle, and even on my skateboard. I have sold several to people whom I met in this or that cafe while I was typing away on my Dana.
In the summer of 2010 I decided to write a book. But I found my laptop to be too cumbersome and I was always worried that it would get stolen whenever I had it with me in public. So I set about finding a writing tool which was portable and inexpensive. After trying several devices I found my match in Dana.
Dana provides me with excellent basic word processing abilities without the distraction of email, facebook, photoshop, youtube, or the internet in general. I have gotten more actual writing done in the half year since I started using Dana than in the 5 years previous with my laptop.
Dana & Windows 7 & 8:
Not gonna happen. Doesn't work. Unsupported. Fahget about it. Windows 7 has both compatibility mode and XP mode (these are not the same) and neither of them does beans for any AlphaSmart.
The only way to make a Dana useful is to have either a separate PC or a second hard drive booting good ole user-friendly Windows XP. I use my old XP laptop to sync my Dana to the same external drive to which my regular PC backs up. *Voila* Problem solved.
Do NOT buy a Dana if you use Windows 7 and are not willing to do this extra step. This will probably apply to Windows 8 as well.
Supposedly (according to RenLearn) you CAN sync from Windows 7 if you use the IR pod. But I haven't verified this. (as of 9/1/12)
Writing On The Go:
Dana provides excellent distraction free basic word processing capabiity in an extremely portable package. Dana saves files as Rich Text. You have the same functions found in programs like MS WordPad. You can indent, bold, italicize, and make bullet lists. The keyboard is one of the best I have ever used. It is like typing on silk. The keys are concave to fit the shape of your finger tips, they depress easily, and have gentle but firm return. You can save as many files as will fit in the 8MB or 16MB of memory. Dana also has an excellent built in screen-backlight in case you are typing in dim light, as I often do.
Dana is way more durable than a laptop and weighs only about 2 pounds and fits easily in most backpacks. I often type with Dana on my lap without any discomfort. It turns on in about one and half seconds and is usually ready to work before I am. Because Dana is so energy efficient I have never had the batteries drop dead on me. And since Dana can recharge through the USB port and I sync my Dana to my PC every day that I write they will probably never go dead on me. According to the manufacturer specs, Dana can run up to 25 hours on a single charge.
Cables & Software:
People often ask me about cables and getting information to their computer. With Dana this is very easy. The manufacturer provides free downloadable desktop software for Mac & PC which backs up and syncs all the data between Dana and you computer. The software is Palm OS based and includes all the features found on the old Palm Pilots. The calendar is an excellent stand-alone application.
Cables are not a problem. Even though there are several ports in the back of Dana, the only one you really need is the USB port. Dana takes a type-B USB cable. This is the same kind that goes to your USB printer. These can be purchased easily and cheaply. These are so common that you may already have an extra one. And odds are that even if you don't have one, your friend or neighbor does. Maybe if you ask they will give it to you.
Dana has a an additional USB printer port for direct printing. But I haven't tried it as I always print from my PC. Though it will power one of those twisty USB-powered LED lamps. Now I can type in the dark.
Batteries and Dana:
Beware of used Danas that "include" a rechargeable battery. These batteries may be, and frequently are, eight to ten years old. A Dana with an old battery will frequently crash and lose data, even if it's "backed-up" on the SD card. The solution: replace the battery. You can buy a new rechargeable battery pack for less than $20 from renlearn.com
Dana will run fine on normal AA batteries. But you must use alkalines. If you try to use store bought rechargeables , Dana will not turn on. You can make it work with store bought rechargeables by rewiring Dana's insides just a little. You snip two wires, wind them together. Then do it again to two different wires. I did that to mine. To do it well takes about 45 minutes and you have to be careful about the circuit boards. There are detailed instructions online. It's a lot easier than it looks at first. The best thing about this hack is that you can use your own batteries and recharge them by plugging Dana into a USB port, though you lose the ability to safely use alkaline batteries. I found this trade-off to be completely acceptable for myself. If you do a search for "Dana battery hack" you'll find the site by V. Fry where I learned to do this.
What You Should be Aware of When Buying A Used Dana
Some Danas are sold by individuals who are the first owner and used it for their own writing. Most, probably over 95%, were owned first by schools and sold off in large lots. These are often grimy and dirty beyond belief with old stickers and food stuck to them. These require a thorough cleaning. In my experience About 1 in 5 also often have other problems. Sometimes the system board is bad and the thing won't work (very bad.) There are a litany of problems that can occur with used Danas. Sometimes it can be lived with, other times it can be fixed with a reset, and other times it means you need to get a different Dana. Most work fine. Almost all of them have some scratches on the case or screen.
The Dana Stylus
You can actually get by without one. A ball point pen cap or a pinky fingernail works well enough. But it is nice to have a stylus on hand. There is a little slot in the side of the Dana into which the stylus clicks. The default stylus is black. You can also get a colored stylus in red, yellow, purple, blue, and green.
Is Dana Right For You?
If you are a writer looking for a tough, portable writing tool then almost certainly the answer is Yes! Dana should be synced every day or so that you write. If you are going to be near your computer most days but don't want to haul your laptop around with you, then Dana is an excellent choice. Dana is Palm OS 4 based. This means that if your batteries die, you lose all of your data. So if you plan to be away from a recharge point for more than a couple of days then you need something with more data stability. An AlphaSmart 3000 is an excellent choice for that because they are more durable than a Dana and won't experience data loss when main power fails. The 3000 however only saves files in plain text and has an 87 page limitation.
If you are looking for a device for your child then you should take into consideration the child's level of technical aptitude and motivation to write. Dana requires a level of mindfulness that many young children have not yet developed. Dana needs to be synced to the PC and recharged very regularly. A less challenging alternative would be the AlphaSmart 3000 mentioned above....I find this portable word-processor a wonderful gadget. It's a lot tougher than most laptops, as well as lighter and less expensive. Also, the batteries last a lot longer. So I take it with me whenever I don't wish to lug my computer around. I also like the fact it can store up to eight documents, as well as upload the document to almost any word-processing programme on the computer.
The one drawback I find is that the machine only works with basic font. It does not have a footnote, italics, bold or underline function -all of which would be handy. I also suggest you pay the extra and get the built-in rechargeable battery pack as well as the carrying case, since each of these makes the AlphaSmart much more convenient to travel with.
