Great value for the money. The only down side is that after you put it on it blends with the color of xoom to turn gray. Not that clear, close the white. I stopped using it since am using the xoom speaker for charging (can't put it on speaker doc while its on.)

I have owned several Pocket PCs, including a few earlier versions of the iPaq. Of the ones I have tried, this is probably the best, though its not a great leap forward. Having WiFi, Bluetooth, SDHC support (previous versions didn't support the new higher capacity cards that this one does I have an 8Gb SD card in mine), a standard USB connection (previous iPaqs I owned use a proprietary USB connector) a relatively fast processor, the latest version of Windows Mobile all whilst retaining a relatively small form factor is a strong combination. Whilst many will opt for a Pocket PC phone (as my last Windows Mobile device was), having a seperate PDA from your phone has advantages for some e.g. if you are obliged to use a particular mobile phone for work (as I am) then you don't need the phone features on your PDA. With this device I can keep all of my personal contacts seperate from the business contacts on my phone and use the bluetooth feature to get my phone (a Blackberry Pearl) to dial any number I select on my iPaq. I have read other reviews on Amazon and can't say I have experienced any of the problems described. The screen on my iPaq works fine (no odd colours displayed) and windows media player has not yet crashed on my once (and I have listened to quite a lot of music and watched video on it). Overall, not a stunning leap forward but hard to find fault with it.

I eagerly anticipated the release of the 110 to replace my aging ipaq 4150. It made me appreciate what a great pda that one was.

What I like about the 110-

-Small size. Not quite as small as the 4150, but very close. It's snug but still fits my Sena case.

-Synchronizing with Exchange Server. Email, tasks and calendar sync great.

-Build quality. Feels like a quality product and should be pretty durable.

-BT and Wifi work well.

What I don't like-

-WM6 is buggy and slow. It locks up, runs sluggish and I have to soft reset frequently. My WM2003 pda did not have these issues.

-More memory would have been nice.

-Did not come with a backup program.

I'm glad HP came out with a classic(no phone) PDA. It's a great solution for me. I like this unit but I can get things done faster with my old 4150.

Excellent PDA (or Pocket PC) only one of the few new models that you will see in the market. I use to be a Palm fan but turned to the dark side because there are no new palm PDA models, the Palm TX is 3 year old technology and still sells for the same price. I had this one for over 1 month and is perfect. Connects to the wi-fi internet in cafes fast and easy. I am in the medical field and I store manuals and drug information.

I also bought a 2GB SD expansion card where I store all my family pictures and most of the software downloaded. It even comes with a nice leather slipcase. Never need any reset, so far no regrets!

The only problem was that my desktop has Windows vista and I bought office 07, but it doesnt come with office outlook 07 that you need for the instalation and is about S/90 in amazon. No problems synchronizing with vista. Good luck.

Wife got me the iPaq for my birthday. The box does say 110 but the HP asset view utility shows the Model ID as "HP iPaq 111 Classic Handheld". Since I have never owned a Pocket PC before it took me a while to find all the software I would need to use (Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC, Google Maps, etc....).

Pros (in my short experience):

1. BT and Wireless work great I prefer transferring files this way though dont hope to set up WPA PEAP/MSCHAPv2 without a struggle.

2. Office Mobile is a great bonus. Word is quick and responsive using the registry I use this as a default for most text files.

3. All the free WM5 and WM2003 utilities I have tried so far work just fine on WM 6.

4. I am not a heavy user, but task switching seemed fairly quick and the interface responsive.

5. Handwriting recognition just awesome (I scrawl)

Cons:

1. Battery life does not seem as great as I would have liked (especially for reading books).

2. Pocket IE (the default browser) is painful.

3. Sometimes switching between the keyboard and the transcriber is a little painful

For those of you who just need a portable device to feel connected this is a pretty good toy!

Hello, Chris here. Well, I can say one thing, Amazon's shipping is pretty fast when something is in stock. We got it Tuesday, after ordering it Sunday. If only all the accessories came at the same time, but it's ok.

To the device itself..

I've seen review videos before, detailing the unboxing of a handheld device, thinking, why? Well, now I know why. It's a wonderful thing to see a pretty "cool" and handy box design. The box interior, as has been seen in various reviews online, has some detail about the iPaq itself, and the handheld is well-protected from damage. Everything is organized, and I didn't notice anything in the box that didn't seem atleast necessary.

Setting up the iPaq was a breeze, in fact, all I did personally was just update my PC's Adobe Acrobat Reader, and install the last freeware version of TCPMP (a media player) to the iPaq. For those of you that may be interested, yes, TCPMP v7.2 does indeed work with Windows Mobile 6. Everything else on this iPaq is "stock", from the factory, atleast for now.

Afew things I'd like to mention.. There is a kind of glitch common to alot of iPaqs, in that ActiveSync will turn the device on quite often, trying to connect to the PC, whether there's a cable or not. This can drain the battery "a little bit" (between 3% and 5% over 24 hours, I've heard). There is a fix for this if you search online, but it's very simple. I noticed the "glitch" within afew minutes of having the iPaq out of the box, but I was prepared, and the fix worked. Also, as I'm sure many will make note of, the power button is in an "awkward" place, very close to the voice recorder button. If you hold the iPaq just right, or keep it in a clamshell case of some kind, this probably won't be a problem, but I've already accidentally recorded myself, while trying to put the iPaq in it's included slip-case. If you remember where the record button is, however, it likely won't be a significant problem.

I know this is quick for a proper review, posting it the following morning from receiving the device in the mail, but if anything changes, I'll update it, promise.

Wi-fi connection is very strong. Lastnight just sitting in my bedroom messing with it, I was able to connect to a neighbor's WLAN hub, and access the internet. I haven't been able to check out the bluetooth capability, as I don't have anything that uses it at the moment. I don't foresee myself getting a bluetooth keyboard in the near future, or headphones. The jack-in headphones I have work GREAT with the 3.5mm jack on the iPaq. Audio quality is fine. If you use the speaker, the only way you'll get good output is in a mausoleum with no other noises. This device's speaker was probably an afterthought, but that's ok, as headphones are perfectly good. A speaker system that connects to the 3.5mm jack should work also. I have a small battery-powered one that is for mp3 players, and the iPaq connects with it nicely.

I converted a music video for play with Windows Media on the iPaq. It played ok. Windows Media on a mobile device is adequate, but I personally look for other players whenever possible, especially for larger video and audio files. The iPaq's included PDF and TXT programs work fine. HP's Photosmart Mobile does a great job of viewing images, but that's expected. The device is alittle more compact than I thought, but I like it. Now that I have installed the familiar and more functional TCPMP software, I have no real complaints. Battery life is good. The device responds to my input. I can do tasks without waiting for the device to "catch up" with me. It connects via a standard mini-USB connector, however, there are some non-HP connectors that WILL NOT work with the iPaq. Please be aware of that. Some "professional" reviewers on various websites have made a point of mentioning that the iPaq won't connect with their non-HP cable, and I think personally that's rather juvenile. Reasonably, you can't expect a company to be responsible if another company's plug won't fit in their socket, right? Just use common sense, do alittle research online, and there's nothing at all I can complain about with this iPaq. I love it. Even though I've had it less than 24 hours. LOL!

While I mentioned that there was a problem with the power and record buttons being very close together, I'd like to say this afternoon I fiddled with the buttons settings, and sure enough, there is a way to shut the record button off. So, there are as of now no complaints whatsoever that I have with this PDA.

I've been using this iPaq for afew months now, and it's still just as good today as the day I unboxed it. I loaded up my first feature-length movie onto SD memory the other night, and it played in WMP *FLAWLESSLY*, no visible jerking or hanging. I would also like to note, that I have not had to perform a single reset on this device yet, soft or hard, and I use it daily. I keep very little on the ROM, but I just thought I'd mention that positive from my experience. Not bad for a handheld, as I've heard many stories about people having to reset their device every once in awhile.

So, in short, I still love this PDA, and fully recommend it!

Device works WONDERFUL, instructions are HORRIBLE.

I do not think it would have killed the manufacturer to provide "dumbed down" instructions for idiots with IQs under 164, like me.

Anyway, here is what I figured out. These instructions are for the Mac. I shudder to think what you Windoze people will have to go through.

First, you need to set up the device for recognition by the Mac's Bluetooth. You only have to do this once, through "System Preferences > Bluetooth". Easy enough: just make sure the scanner is set to "BT".

Then for anything that you want to scan:

1) Turn on scanner to "Scan"

2) If desired, set color ("C/BW") and DPI ("LOW/HIGH") with switches on side of scanner to appropriate settings

3) Put scanner on item to be scanned, click the "SCAN" button once to start (Green SCAN LED should come on)

4) Move the scanner slowly on the item to be scanned.

5) When finished scanning, click the "SCAN" button again: green SCAN LED will turn off.

6) Slide scanner's button to "BT"

7) On computer's menu bar, select "Handy Scanner > Browse Device"

8) In the "Browsing..." window, select the file you want to transfer by double-clicking on it. It will ask you for a destination.

This device is absolutely indispensable when you want to scan something where a standard flatbed scanner is impractical, like your local public library.

I've had plenty of experience with "handheld scanners" back in the late '80s. This product is a glorious "step up".

I just purchased this product after using and enjoying the IRIS digital pen. This product simply works wonders for capturing any information out of bound source material. I am into genealogy and had been searching for a portable scanner that I could bring with me when doing research. This product not only grabs the info and pictures I want but allows me to take the text and turn it into an editable Word document allowing me to copy/paste into Rootsmagic saving me tons of time. First, the instructions are the worst I have ever encountered for any electronic product I have ever bought. They have put all their effort into providing as many languages as possible into one tiny booklet.

Second,the customer is not warned before the purchase that there is no good way to scan a bound book created with letter-sized pages. The non-scanning ends are simply too big. That's what I bought it for. By the time I had traveled to the library that had the rare book, it was too late to return the scanner. The 30-day return period starts when you ORDER the scanner, not when you get it.

The image quality is too poor for photographs. My advice is to try a wand scanner before you order it and choose a brand with better documentation and a better return policy.

First off the instructions are very scanty; you have to load the software to realize that you should not load it with the scanner not connected. I left the scanner hooked up for over 12 hours and only managed 2 strokes of battery life which disappeared pretty quickly in 5 minutes of use. Trying to get help on the product online is like pulling teeth. Presently i only get a one bar charge and sometimes I think the battery discharges itself. the scanner is not particularly friendly to books (as opposed to single standalone pages) maybe except when the pages between beginning and end are balanced. They're not so helpful either when the pages are double columned (just something I noticed). Right now I don't use it as I imagined but I'll take another shot at it later. Should have I bought a pen type?

The bluetooth option along with a reviewer stating it works with their ipad lead me to believe that this scanner would work with my iPad in a similar manner as the camera attachment. (I know it was just wishful thinking on my part) I'll grant you that the description does say "tablet PC" and once you open the instruction booklet, it shows quite clearly that it *will not work with any iOS operating system*.

The only way to get your scans into the ipad is to use the camera attachment and insert the microSD card and import them. While this will work, I can buy a much less expensive handheld scanner and transfer via SD card.

I also had a 50/50 result with the actual scans performed. I'm sure over time that it would have gotten better but as I said, due to the price for what it does, it will be going back. I'm going to try out the Wolverine PASS200 Handheld Portable Documents, Books and Photo Scanner instead. As of this review, it's $50 cheaper and also scans to a microSD card.

This seller is almost as bad. I added five of these $1.99 SD cards to my cart for a total of $9.95, then cancelled the order because the shipping would have been almost thirty bucks.

This is just another way for unethical sellers to try to rip people off and make them think they're getting a good deal when they're really not.

Item doesn't include the standard American lifetime warranty that Kingston products usually come with. I can't read the "Taiwanese" that this product ships with...maybe there's a Taiwan warranty. I bought this item refurbished for my husband. He didn't want a lot of bells and whistles, really just something to keep track of contacts and calendar appointments, etc. He loved his old phone that had Windows Mobile 5 on it, so he could use this PDA right away. We did have to download the new Windows Mobile Device Center on our laptop so that ActiveSync would work, and I used the server trick that I found on that stops ActiveSync from constantly running in the background. Other than that we haven't run across any problems so far.

I've had it for more than a month now. The case and computer have held up against freezing weather, light rain and rough handling. I'm a nontrivial, enthusiast type of PocketPC user, so I regard what products like this have to offer fairly seriously. As such, I am fully satisfied with this aluminum case. I had a smaller version of the same thing (meant for the standard battery profile) for several years beforehand, and loved it. When the time came to get this extended battery case, I expected the same durability and convenience, and I got it. Bonus: it came wrapped in a nice padded box, of the keepable variety. I've used this case for a while now in my daily routine, and has stood up perfectly well, as I have reason to expect it will for some time to come. The thin padding within keeps the device snug inside, and the door has a convenient SD card holder for a spare memory card. What's more, there are openings along the bottom, top and side which allow access to the interface port, buttons and card slots + headphone jack, respectively, while the door is closed. It's great that Handspring makes this an available option. My desktop has USB, so the USB cradle comes with the Visor fits the bill. But my laptop does not have USB. There are three options available. First is of course to live without a second cradle for a while, because I might soon buy a new laptop. Who knows! Second is to buy a PCMCIA card adapter for UBS port. Third is to buy Handspring's serial port cradle. It's not a big decision, but it's not an easy one either. I in fact mulled over this for a while before deciding to take the serial cradle. The main reasoning for getting the serial cradle is that I figure I need a second cradle anyway, one at home and one at work. Yes the serial cradle is much slower than the USB, but Palm users have alway used the slow serial port sync, and they still do. With this respect, I must thank Handspring for introducing a fast USB sync while at the same time making a serial port cradle available. As a standing alone product, I would rate it four star due the lack of speed, but as an option within a complete product line, the serial cradle deserves a solid five star.

I was developing software for Handspring using CodeWarrior. Unfortunately the current CodeWarrior(c) does not support USB yet, so I have to look for a serial cradle for Handspring. This is very helpful for me to download the Palm binary code for POSE/Palm emulator.

I haven't tried this cradle to other softwares, put it seems to work to other softwares too as long as they have COMx supports.

This is a nice alternative to the usb if you don't have usb accessible computer, but the drawback is the lack in speed which is considerable.

I have not yet tried every single key to ensure function but the unit pairs easily and the touch pad works as a mouse as expected. There appears to be one little caveat to this keyboard that I did not pay close enough attention to and would like to point out.

There are two versions of this keyboard. One is the bluetooth version that I purchased and another is a wireless (non-bluetooth) version that uses a dongle. BOTH units look VERY similar (they appear to even have the same model number). In the wireless (non-bluetooth) version, there are the full row of function keys from F1 to F12. HOWEVER, on the bluetooth version, the function keys are only from F1 to F11. This is illustrated in the product pictures used by Amazon and Aukey but you have to PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to notice it. Even the pictures on the box of the actual product show the wireless (non-bluetooth) version so even the manufacturer seems confused. I did not notice and that is my bad however, for my purpose the bluetooth version is the only thing I can use so I will have to make do with the missing function key. I think the manufacturer could have sacrificed another key (like the dedicated back light key or the dedicated bluetooth pairing key) to better effect and that is why I dinged the unit one star.

Updated: This unit has a flat back and sits nicely on a hard surface. The chrome ring serves as the arrow keys.

The M25 is very easy to use. I did not have any problems with the CD installation like I did with previously owned MP3 players. After I read the User's Guide on the CD, transferring music was quick and simple. Furthermore, the Motorola Music Manager allowed me to delete songs or edit titles, artists, genre, et cetera, directly on the computer.

The M25 is very light weight and small. It also comes with an arm band, which is great since I work out a lot. The toggle key on the side is a wonderful feature because it facilitates the change of songs and makes the menu more accessible. The lock key on the side also prevents any button from being activated when pushedjust in case the M25 is carried in a purse or pocket.

Furthermore, the sound output is clear & excellent! The earbuds are extremely comfortable and fitted. The design of the earbuds maximizes the sound output. Too bad the earbuds are retractable! Anyways, the volume is adjustable on a scale of zero to thirty, and thirty is destroy-my-eardrums loud! I love this MP3 player and would recommend to any one and every one!!

I was looking for an inexpensive MP3 player that acepted flash memory expansion cards to do the following:

Listen to audiobooks.

Listen to music.

Listen to and record FM.

The M25 does all of these things. However, the FM is lousy. I have compared it with several MP3 players and walkmans. I exchanged my original unit with Motorola and got the same FM performance with the replacement unit. This is the main reason that I only gave it 3 stars. It's so weak that I am unable to get a clear station from my house even though all the other radios in the house work fine.

On the positive side, it's an excellent player for audiobooks. The resume feature picks up right where I left off even if I don't use the unit for a week. And it had bookmarks so you can mark a book and go listen to music then come back to your place. Well almost...when you bookmark a large audiobook file it seems to skip back a few minutes. Not a big deal and much easier than fast forwarding through a 10 hour book.

Music is also very good. Excellent sound quality.

The controls on this unit are very nice. I found several units in this price range and one of the big differences was how easy the controls are to use. A nice feature when you're listening to an audiobook and driving a car.

All in all I like the M25 but too bad about the very weak FM.

Got a brand-new M25 (1-year warranty) as my first MP3/WMA player as replacement for a clunky CD player. This M25 is much lighter than the Walkman CD-player it replaced. Also eliminated : the periodic skip that hits the CD player while one is jogging. The music coming out of the supplied earbuds is also pleasant.

My unit came with a driver and software CD, a triple-A battery and USB2.0 cable. My Windows-XP computer immediately recognized the M25 as another drive -doing drag-and-drop of files or folders was a cinch. [By the way, I was using the Walkman CD player to listen to Spanish language lessons. For this M25, I ripped the audio into WMA, and now I listen to the WMA-version of the Spanish lessons. The 256MB standard-memory on the M25 is enough space for 3 CD's worth of lessons (in WMA-format) ]

I believe that the full-detailed user manual is on the CD that came with the M25. There is also a paper-version Quick Start Guide which was sufficient to get the player up and running, and to learn basic controls. [However, the QuickStart does not contain instructions on how to properly set time and date but I was able to do this by fiddling around with the buttons. I have also preset a couple of the FM-preset stations.]

The M25-architecture is the appropriate design for my needs (especially for language lessons). The unit remembers the settings as it is turned off. So, at re-start, the M25 resumes play at the exact point of the audio-lesson as when I turned it off. Controls are easy to use and intuitive. I have sufficient command over this the M25 (e.g.,volume control, ski forward/back, volume) without having to look at the controls. Other controls (e.g. choosing from the 5 provided EQ-settings) will require more attention. The M25 also has LCD backlighting - useful for reviewing the ID3 labels during late evening walks that I do.

Sound quality is excellent (whether it comes from the WMA-format Spanish lessons, from the dozen or more songs(MP3 format) which came with the unit, or from FM.] There is a provided armband. The headphones/earbuds have good sound quality. However, I have a fit-problem with the right earbud so I will probably try to locate a better-fitting pair of Sony headphones.

I am pleased with this unit. And since this M25 allows expansion via SD/MMC card, very likely, I will add a 512mb card next week. All in all, this Motorola m25 player is good value for my money.

For what I paid for this MP3 player, it does exactly what I need it to. Small, cute, and easy to use. Radio tuner is not so hot, but playing tunes works great.

I like this little Mp3 player a lot. The only problem is that the head phone has a cover and keeps falling off after a couple days of use. Except that its good. Good Quality sound. The little joy stick by the side is a very easy to navigate.

I had my doubts about how this product would actually work and if it would allow me to charge my Iphone3GS because Apple has made its phone series very picky about chargers. Charged my droid from 30% to 100% in about an hour and that was even in cloudy conditions. This was great the first four times I used it. It allowed me to charge the battery on my iPhone 3gs from 20 % to 85%. The bummer is that it only did this four times before it has completely died. It no longer takes a charge via solar cell nor via the charge cord.

I bought this with full knowledge of the physics limitation on this device. For those of you who thought this would be a replacement for the Household AC plug in or even a car charger, I am sure you were disappointed. First off here is the science behind the device. That means that the charger will not bring your cellphone up to 100% or even 80% charge. You are looking at 40% to 50% charge max, that's it. Now in a pinch, when you are hiking away from civilization or at the beach or on a train where there are no outlets, this device will recharge your battery to a level that you can use your phone. That's the greatest feature, but it will not do what you expect from an AC outlet. Which is to recharge your phone to the 100% level. So don't expect that. Yes, the manufacturers could have built a device with a stronger internal battery, three maybe four times the energy level, that could recharge your phone closer to the 100% level. But then it would cost three of four times the price. For $20 you get a charger that does not draw from the electric grid, it will bring a dead or dying cellphone battery back to life to an acceptable level for moderate usage. Understand the limitations, and you will be happy with this remarkable device. Hope this helps everyone in making their purchasing decision. Once set up, this charger is great to have around. I bike and camp a lot and it's great to have a charger that doesn't need electricity. But, as another reviewer pointed out, the instructions for this charger are very unclear. Some chargers (not solar powered) indicate the amount of charge left. With this charger, there is no way to know whether the it's fully charged or almost out. The only way to tell it's charged is that the "charge in" light goes out when plugged in or in sunlight. Definitely take the advice of another reviewer and start out by fully charging this through the USB connection. I think it's best use is to have it in constant sunlight during the day (hooked on your bike or backpack) then charge your ipod/iphone ect. overnight. But once you figure out it's idiosyncrasies, and if your activities take you away from electricity for hours/days at a time, it's really useful.

I ordered these because I needed cheap earbuds and they just happen to come with a USB cable as well to charge my Pre. I don't have a Pre anymore but an Evo 4G and the USB Cable still works with that device.

On the other side, the earbuds work but I would recommend to anyone that really wants good sound, the sound sound distorted and muffled. They also hurt my ears when I put them in so I stopped using them. The original Pre headphones fill alot better to me. They sound better has well

If you can afford the...wireless, and realize that this is not going to replace your desktop for web surfing, the Palm VIIx is a good way to stay connected. And it fits in your pocket!

Like the other Palms, the VIIx does what it claims, and never complains.

There are two catches, though.

1) wireless applications are a very limited version of the net. There's no built-in web browser that lets you go to any old web page. So unless you install 3rd party programs, you're limited to the 40 bundled destinations (Amazon, AskJeeves, CBS Marketwatch, Fidelity, ...). Surprisingly, there was no built-in wireless phone book.

2) the wireless connection is slow and expensive. The bandwidth is under 9600 baud, and there's a 2-4 second delay between clicking and getting a response.

If you're an information junkie (stock quotes, news, email, eBay--is this you?) you will easily blow through the limited wireless plans...

On the plus side:

1) I was always able to connect to the wireless net (in buildings, in a car, in a park where cell coverage is spotty)

2) The device always did what I expected.

3 stars. I'd give it 5 if the wireless service was cheaper and faster.

I don't mean to be critical of my fellow reviewers, but some of the negative reviews of the Palm VII totally miss the point of the thing. I carried one for over a year and found it incredibly useful. Now that I've moved outside of the service area, I miss it a lot. In spite of having the original VII with only 2 Megs of RAM, I never ran out of memory. I also never exceeded the lowest monthly service level, finding it adequate for my needs. Here's what I did and how I used it, which should be enough information for you to make a decision for yourself:

This is truly the traveler's friend: I have no office and I get in a lot of planes. You'll make that dreaded trip to the airline service desk with a lot more confidence if you are armed with the schedule of every single airline and current flight status. The VII knows what flights are schedule between any two points at any time, and provides current flight status. When 'suggesting' to the desk staff that they strongly consider booking you on another airline, your case will be stronger with flight number and departure info.

You can usually find the departure gate information (not to mention delay status) sitting in the shuttle from the parking area (at DFW, you need to know the gate number to tell the taxi which building to stop at). And of course, if you want, you can even make plane reservations online.

If driving over 10 miles, I query for traffic conditions. Embarrassed to ask directions? With the VII, you can enter location and destination and get detailed directions. Handy when stuck in the boonies without a phone. And when was the last time you saw a phone book at a pay phone? The VII can access Yellow and White pages. Weather forecasts, any time, any place.

Ordering a book from Amazon is sort of a parlor trick, but it's also a useful way to research books in print. Can't remember which movies featured Minnie Driver ? There are a 2 movie databases. Faced with a life without wireless, I've had to buy a new PDA with a lot more RAM to carry a German/English dictionary. I actually bought two, but they aren't anywhere near as useful as the online translators, which not only support full sentences, but they translate between multiple languages. English dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia are available also, which again is a big help to somebody without an office.

The Palm VII does all this with the use of 'web clipping' applets that work with special applications on the information provider's web site. There are now hundreds of these things that can be downloaded.

On the downside, this thing is a AAA pig. Get yourself a couple sets of Nimh batteries, and a small charger. More than once, I found myself paying a premium price for new batteries at a hotel gift shop. I also recommend the serial cable if you can't get infrared to work with your laptop--carrying a cradle is a drag.

This is not a platform for heavy-duty web surfing, nor is it a convenient place to send and receive mail, but I really miss not being able to use it any more for all these questions that need to be answered RIGHT NOW. But if you do get stuck without a book, you can download an e-book too.

The Palm VIIx is the worthy successor to the innovative Palm VII which has been available for some time. The VII was the first incarnation of Palm's wireless handheld. It is a great device but I never bought it because of the 2Mb memory constraints on the old VII. However, that has been mitigated with the new VIIx. This puppy includes a whopping 8Mb of memory. Ample for almost any application or usage.

The VIIx comes pre-loaded with 40 or so wireless content apps. There are currently about 400 apps for the VII. You can get them for free at [Palm]. They range from bookstores like Amazon to acccessing your email on the go, to messaging, to online dictionairies. I would recommend to visit [Palm] to see the variety available and also if your area is covered by the mobile network.

I have a Fidelity trading account so I can use the VIIx to trade or view my portfolio. One of the most popular apps is the Starbucks locator. I wonder if there is a correlation between owning a VII and cafeine consumption. Another great app is MapQuest, and ThinAirMail lets you access any POP3 email account. Both are included standard.

The wireless response time is great. This is because of the way that Palm designed there applications as PQA's. PQA stands for Palm Query Application. They make wireless transmission efficient by ensuring that only pertinent data is sent. The way we view web pages, the whole page is loaded every time we view it, this includes a lot of layout and other data that we're not really interested in. PQA's predefine the layout and transmit only actual data. Eg. the price of a book you request from Amazon. The result is fast and efficient response. There are also several apps which let you browse the web in the traditional way, though I don't know why you'd want to. I don't think that the size of PDA screens makes web-browsing very useful or convenient. But, for those who insist...the Palm can definitely do it.

So far I have had no problems with signal quality. Whether on the street on in buildings. I'm in NY, but as mentioned before, don't buy this puppy until you have checked coverage in your area.

The VII series is a bit larger than the III. To me size is very important, I also own a Vx. But I will make an exception for the the VII, because wireless is just so ... cool and convenient. I could also have picked the Omnisky wireless service. Then I'd have to attach a modem to my Vx and the package together would be more bulky than the VII series so I prefer the convenience of having an all-in-one VIIx.

The device is turned on by flipping the antenna. Easy enough. Installation is a breeze. Takes all of 5 minutes and you are going. I recommend the 'all-you-can-eat' subscription. It costs $45/mth but well worth it, but you can also go for one of the more moderate subscriptions. They start a $10/mth.

Wireless is great. Definitely the way of the future. I love being able to pop up my email on the go, check for a movie with moviefone or just read a book, play a game, or read magazines with AvantGo. After all, let's not forget that other than wireless, Palm makes a great PDA with many other applications.

The 8 Mb of memory the VIIx has is what it needed in the first place. Now you can load all of those games and non-wireless apps you had to pass on with the VII. The integration is a little tighter in Palm OS 3.5, but a lot of people won't be happy with this until (1) the screen improves from four shades of gray (yes, I am envious of the IIIc) and (2) the modem speed improves.

The Qualcomm PD100 tried to overcome the speed (and coverage issue) but left you holding a Palm to your ear with a screen just too small to read).

And in the meantime, the Palm VII provides an integrated wireless email and fax platform (both with lookup from your address book) which a novice can get out of the box and running in ten minutes or less (try that with a PC).

TIPS: go to palmgear.com and download DPWeb browser (or other browser) and go with the unlimited plan if you can afford it. Then you will be able to access nearly any web site, not just those with web clipping applications.

I was one of the first Palm VI owners and was very up beat about my new toy. But now that I have had it for a while, I discontinued my palm.net service as a waste of money. I recommend palm buyers get a non-Internet model and use the great organizer features. The Internet function is VERY slow and subject to poor reception or incomplete downloads. The cost of these downloads is very expensive if you use it enough to make it worth while. The range of material available for Internet download is very limited. And did I say SLOW? A web enabled cell phone would give you both the net and a phone -with cheaper monthly charges and you can both talk and surf with the same device. When you buy the Palm VII you must use palm.net and they are not well priced or customer oriented. A web enabled phone allows you to pick your provider and is always on for a stock alert or other quick message (unlike the palm).
