USB Cradle Docking Station Charger AC Adapter for Palm Treo 680 750
- Charges PDA and synchronizes your data at the same time
- Blue LED power indicator
- Keep your Treo sitting in a nice position while synching and charging
- Package comes with cradle base, AC adapter (for base) and USB cable (for base)
- 1 year warranty by the manufacturer
It charges both the phone and spare battery when both the USB cable and power adapter are plugged into the unit. (The power adapter is not the same as the Treo wall charger and can't be used without the cradle.) One odd circumstance, at least on the unit I received, is that the unit seemed to stop charging if the USB cable was attached and the PC was off, even if the separate power cable was plugged in.
The LED on the front indicates power on, but one must look at the Treo's charge indicator to see how the battery in the phone is doing. There is also a separate red/green LED in the back for the spare battery status. This would be a nice touch, but my unit flashed alternating colors if no spare battery was inserted for charging, which I found distracting.
The Treo itself is held at a comfortable viewing angle, for me at least.
The unit does not have a separate synch button, and the customer is supposed to run the HotSync application on the Treo in order to synchronize.
Generally these are all minor irritations, and would not be deal breakers for me, but the unit failed entirely to synch. I tried with two laptops, an IBM Thinkpad T30 with Windows 2000 at the Service Pack 4 level, and a Compaq V4440US with Windows XP Pro at the Service Pack 2 level. This was tested both directly to the laptops, as well as via an Adaptec powered USB hub. The Palm synch cable included with the Treo works consistently in all these permutations.
If you do not need to synchronize with Outlook, or can do so via a wireless interface, this may not be an issue for you. I found it unworkable. Not recommended.
Note that this is sold under some other names, not necessarily just the Fosmon brand.
To their credit, my seller, SFPlanet, allowed me to return the unit.

Ion iSC08 Document Scanner
- Scans photos & documents in color & B&W
- Built-in 2.4" LCD screen to monitor scanned images
- Scans to high-resolution, 300 dpi JPEG format
- Does not require a computer
- Includes SD card
I have not yet scanned any documents, as I bought this primarily to scan photos. I like how small and compact it is and I could sit anywhere to scan a stack of photos. Excellent buy and would recommend it to a friend.
I will add if you photo is being scanned vertically or is smalled than 4x6, it scans with an odd line down the side (which I assume could be prevented if you use the photo scanner holder thingy!), but I just cropped out the extra in my photo editing program.

This is a piece of junk. If the paper is too thin or too soft the feeder will not detect the paper.Read Best Reviews of Ion iSC08 Document Scanner Here
I bought this when I realized that between tax, work, and home I had piles of papers that were completely disorganized and taking up space. I took me one evening to scan all the documents from the past six years. The quality turned out very well, even for longer than standard pieces of paper. My property tax statements would be too long to fit on a normal flatbed scanner, this scanner handled them perfectly. The preview screen is small but gives a reasonable view of what was scanned to see if it came out okay.I haven't used this scanner for anything but text documents. I have no idea if it works well with pictures. This unit died after 6 months and very little use. It will not power on. I called customer service and discovered that the warranty period is a whopping 90 days. I was extremely disappointed in this product. Stay away!I use this to scan documents and receipts. As best I can tell, this scanner is not capable of scanning directly to a PC, but you can hook it to a PC to transfer the images off the SD card after you're done scanning. I use it mainly with an Eye-Fi SD card to automatically transfer scanned documents to my Android tablet over WiFi. If you're looking to scan documents on the go without a PC this is exactly what you need.

iHome Rechargeable Portable Mini Speaker for Kindle Fire
When I got the iK63 I immediately plugged it in to watch MI:3; the speaker sounded great, but 20min in it faded from the factory charge on the battery. To recharge the Li battery, it came with a micro-B to USB that plugs into the back of the speaker. Hmmm...that meant not plugging it in to use the battery of the Fire. I used the Fire's USB to AC adapter to recharge it, but that meant not charging my Fire. I really wish iHome would have packaged a AC adapter that had 2 usb ports for charging the speaker and the fire at the same time. It is also only 1 speaker and when you plug it in, the Fire's speakers turn off; making it a mono setup. The instructions suggest getting a 2nd speaker and you can daisy chain them to go back to a stereo setup; but I said, hell with that. Not gonna pay $60+ for stereo speakers that I will have to recharge each speaker individually, along with my fire. In defense of the product, the speaker did sound much better than the onboard speaker of the Fire. It just did not fulfill my wants and was too much of a hassle to deal with.
Back to using my Sennheiser HD 202 II Professional Headphones (Black).got the speaker the other day, worked fine, nice sound. did everything i wanted it to do. watched a whole movie and was on factory change and didn't need to charge it. So far very happy with it. i like the look of it. my music sounds great on it, watched a movie and listen to a whole album on it and didn't need to charge it. like i said, so far it's been great. i will update if things change. all in all its a great little speaker.
Buy iHome Rechargeable Portable Mini Speaker for Kindle Fire Now
I bought this when on Gold Box sale, it's a bit pricey at the regular price. However, the build quality is good and this little speaker delivers. Now your expectations must be realistic. It is a single speaker (mono) in a very small size. It is very lightweight and portable. It looks nice. It has an audio out which is rare. So some nice touches, especially at this price. (Note you can chain two speakers for "simulated" stereo, but a single speaker is mono. Not a big deal for casual listening, but something to be aware of, especially as the specs in the product description are not clear on this.)
So how does it sound? Well, surprisingly good for its size and being a single speaker. These new small drivers are now showing up in lots of systems like this and they deliver pretty amazing sound for their size. In this case the amp has been "tweaked" for added bass response. Overall, it sounds good for casual, personal listening at normal volume levels. At very high volumes (and it can get surprisingly loud) it sounds a bit harsh to me, but at normal levels, fine. The bass response is adequate for music and the vocals (mid-range) and highs are there. This won't challenge your good stereo/audio system, but it will be pleasant for use with your Kindle Fire, ipod, mp3 player or other portable device (it will work with anything that has a 3.5mm headphone/audio output). So thumbs up for its intended purpose.
It comes with a special combined micro USB and audio cable for charging the internal battery and hooking up to the audio out of your device. I would have preferred a separate audio in jack and separate USB for charging, but that's a minor nit pick. (It would allow greater flexibility in use and most people aren't going to use the audio out provided anyway, so there's room for it. But again, not a big deal.) It has nice rubber feet on the bottom, a blue/red LED light on front for charging and power status, and an on/off switch in back.
I tried this out with my laptop/notebook and it worked very well. It's actually even better, as there the combined USB cable and audio cable makes more sense. However, you can also get stereo speakers for around the same price for laptops and their large size is not as much of an issue for this purpose. Still, this very compact lightweight speaker is an attractive option if you're really traveling light.
This is a solid, good value in a very light weight portable speaker. Perfect for it's intended purpose. It will be great for movies/video, audio books and music on the go.
-----------------------------------------------------
(Tip: Plug this in and charge the battery for 4 hours or so before use (or even overnight) to get maximum time from the internal battery in later use.)

As far as quality goes, this little honey works exactly as advertised which is why I'm giving it five stars. However, when it comes to portability, I find earphones or ear buds much more convenient. When it comes to better sound, a Kindle Fire can be hooked up to any sound system with RCA input jacks using a 1/8" stereo plug to 2 RCA plug cable like this one, which I find much more convenient than constantly having to recharge the speaker. Frankly, if you don't have a problem with headphones or ear buds, you have a sound system with RCA input jacks, and you don't do a lot of travelling, then you may not have much use for this product. Verdict: This powered mini-speaker is a real humdinger, but it doesn't really fit my needs, so I decided I wanted my money back. Your mileage may vary.Want iHome Rechargeable Portable Mini Speaker for Kindle Fire Discount?
First, I need to state that I have an LG Portable Speaker that is absolutely fantastic but is, sadly, not longer made. So I have not rated this in comparison with that speaker but in comparison with other speakers of this class that are currently on the market. Of those speakers, this one is definitely the best I've found for sound quality and size. And I listen to a lot of audio, both with radio & podcast apps and audiobooks on my Kindle. I've also used this for my laptop when I didn't want to mess with the stereo computer speakers. My hearing isn't that great so I need a bit more volume, especially if I'm moving around while I'm listening.PROS:
~Excellent sound for its size and portability. Don't expect sound quality like the sound system you have hooked up to your TV. This speaker is designed for portability.
~Small enough to put in a tote bag, car console, etc.; so yes, it's very portable.
~Great battery life--I'm still waiting to recharge the battery. Granted, I don't use this speaker every day but I do use it for 50 minutes or so several times a week and have done so for several weeks now and it's still going on the first charge.
~Has a nice base so speaker will sit firmly on a surface without tipping or rolling over.
~Nice looking--classy.
CONS:
~Manually on/off. If you forget to shut it off when you're done listening, you will have to recharge it before using it again. Trust me--I've done that plenty with my LG speaker. You can't really use the speaker at bedtime or you'll have recharge it first thing to have ready for next time.
~No volume control on the unit; volume must be controlled from device or application source.
Both of these "CONS" are pretty much the norm for speakers this size. There is a trade-off.
If you need more volume from your Kindle or portable player, this should do it.

I am using my iphone 3gs with an fm connector to play audio through my vehicle's speakers. Whether using pandora or as an ipod, I was getting interference on a regular basis. The buzzkiller came quickly and i tried it out in the house, near the computer first, and it worked great no chatter. I had to be creative when using it with the fm connector, as the card was too tall and wide to fit into the cradle, but that was easily remedied with a rubber band. Rubber-banded the phone to the card, to the cradle and set off on a 2 hour trip. Normally the chatter would occur several times an hour we had a total of 2 times, both quite muted, throughout the whole trip. My passenger and i both agreed that the card made the chatter much less annoying and was acceptable!I have a lot of feedback on my office phone from both the handset and headset. I was hoping that the Buzz Killer would eliminate this, but unfortunately it did not help when used with my Nokia E55 cell phone. There was no different between putting my cell phone on the pad or not. I even tried standing the buzz killer up on its side to physically block the cell phone from the office phone, but this did not result in any measurable difference. I'd be interested to hear if other folks have had luck with this as I cannot swap out my office phone and need a solution other than putting my cell phone on the other side of the room. This product really works. I hate that static during conference calls, and all I have to do is put my iPhone on this card and the static never happens.

iGadgitz Black 'Guardian' Genuine Leather Case Cover for Motorola Xoom Android Tablet
- Custom designed to fit the Motorola Xoom with contoured cut-outs for the Xoom's ports and features
- Incorporates 3 angle stand with finer adjustments within each for greater viewing and typing comfort
- Magnet free design means all compass related navigation features will still work accurately!
- Padded genuine leather adds protection and style to your Xoom. Supplied with screen protector
- Unique design offers a stylish alternative to the off the shelf cases current flooding the market
Its real leather and sewn, not glued together. The whole thing is leather. The inside is brushed swede. Its grain on the outside is smooth and beautiful.
Stitching is good, no breaks, smooth, flawless, and adds a nice visual touch too. The snap enclosure is real nice. Its easy to snap and has a strong hold. I like it better than elastic bands or magnets. Magnets interfere with the compass and elastic straps are more a pain, look cheap, and stretch out quickly.
There is no cheap plastic anywhere on the surface, inside or out. The snap is metal too, not plastic.
The stand is also leather covered. It holds great and has more than enough angles.
The cover is very professional looking and made to last.
This is definitely not a cheap built cover and worth every dime.
The quality is supreme!!!
With proper leather care, there is no reason why this cover wont last many, many years.
I am so glad I picked this one. :D
* 7 month update. Still a 5 star cover. No wear, no tears. Its abused, left in a little rain, spilled on, bent, roughed around, and still in like new condition! My tablet inside is perfect and safe. I never take my tablet out, dont have too, and thats what I want for my tablets protection. The cover gets the abuse while my tablet remains unscathed.

I've spent a lot of time searching for an elegant and functional quality folio case for my Xoom. The Motorola folio case was ok, but there are various aggravating issues with it such as the lack of a power hole in the case.
The iGadgidtz Black Guardian Leather case cover is a great solution. First, the workmanship is outstanding. The stitching is very high quality, the cutouts for ALL ports on the Xoom are perfectly sized and placed and the power, headphone and volume jacks are usable even with the case closed. The material is very high quality, textured leather on the outside, felt-like on the inside surface. The screen border is slightly raised to avoid the cover pressing directly on the screen when it is closed. The stand is a hard piece which is wide and stable, giving about 8 steady positions for different useful screen angles. Finally, if you want to use the Xoom in book-reading mode, just fold the case back and snap the closure strap, and it's very comfortable to use.
Using this case with a bluetooth keyboard (such as the Motorola bluetooth keyboard with Trackpad) is an absolute pleasure I'm typing this review using this configuration.
I highly reccomend this case buy it and you will be very satisfied! My family is a Xoom family. My father and son have a case that doesn't allow for the charging and was not well made. I bought this case on the product description and review. This case fits the Xoom perfectly and I don't have to keeptje case open to charge it. All the slots are easily accessible. I like the multiple angle feature.
The case is sewn not glued so I know this will last for awhile.

I purchased and received this product to day. While unpackaging this case I was immediately impressed! The quality of this item is superb. You can tell from the smell and feel that this is a high quality leather case that was constructed and produced to a high quality. The xoom fits well in the case and the levels of adjustment in landscape mode is great. There is no flimsiness at all compared to the Bear Motion 100% Real Leather Case that I had purchased earlier in the week and immediately returned. It works great in portrait mode and lies flat on a surface very well.I like the snap cover for the case, the felt on the inside covers to avoid scratching the screen.
I would highly reccommend this case to anyone that is looking for a good quality case for their xoom. It is about $14 more than the Bear Motion, but it is worth every penny of the extra price.
Do yourself a favor get this case.
UPDATE NOVEMBER 21st, 2012
The snap that holds the case closed recently fell off. I contacted the manufacturer and they did not seem interested in the problem. They were not willing to make any type of effort to resolve the issue. You can draw you own conclusion. I like the case, but it should have not had any issues so soon.I have had numerous tablets and covers, from 5" to 10.1" and this is by far the VERY BEST cover I have bought. Not only does it fit perfectly, but it was designed with all the must haves and wants. Openings for every connection including the power plug, which no one else seems to notice. You can recharge your Xoom tablet without having to leave the case open or removing the tablet. Absolute the best cover out there!! If you have a Motorola Xoom then you NEED this cover!!!

I orginally purchased this case for my iPad 2 from NY reseller Tekserve. At first look, I was impressed with total coverage provided to iPad, including the inside cover material which is soft to the touch. There are two caveats to this case; one being form, since it relies on having ipad sitting perfectly inside the mold, any jostle may unseat said ipad making this case impossible to close. The next being the pesky closing hinge, which has now broken twice, on two different cases, in the exact same spot and thus making the case useless. Hammerhead and Small Dog were kind enough to replace the case under warranty but since its an annoyance to have a case which is unusuable due to a manufacturing defect. I will move on to find the pefect case for iPad 2 even if I have to design it myself. In the past year I have gone through two cases. When new I was quite pleased with the fit and function of the case. Unfortunately, the cases lasted about 6 months before the corners start breaking off. The latch broke off on 1 of the cases. This without either of the cases being dropped or otherwise abused. For a product designed to "protect" it unfortunately falls short. It is obvious why the manufacturer only gives you a 90 day warranty. Disappointing product.I bought this cover in february and in mid march I noticed two corners were chipped and then the latch was broken, wasted money as these products aren't cheap, great idea but definetly needs some tweaking!!!Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Bought this to use on trips, to recharge and connect my PEG-T615C to laptop. The official Sony "solution" for traveling more than a couple of days (the battery doesn't last much longer) consists of two separate items: a cradle-less USB connector to synch, and a power supply. (The power supply is the same that comes with the cradle, but with a connector for the handheld.) Some genius decided they could maximize profit that way, but it is almost as bulky as a second cradle. I wish they offered a single USB cable capable of recharging the handheld (Targus offers such a cable but not for the PEG-Ts)Wednesday, April 2, 2014
PDair B41 Black Leather Case for Samsung Infuse 4G SGH-i997
The leather case came in a nice PDair box, nicely wrapped too! It meets my expectation, hard cover front and back, it holds the Infuse properly not too tight but not too loose either the magnetic stud makes it easy to open and close the case. There are 2 business card/credit card holders on the inner side of the front cover. The back cover has camera opening, so I don't have to pull the phone out from the case if I want to use the camera. It also came with a belt clip which I'm not going to use since I will be pretty much keeping the phone in my purse. Overall I am very satisfied with the product and the seller. Quick respond, very cooperative, fast delivery, nice packaging, and great leather case. I am one happy customer! And in addition to that, I purchased this product with Amazon reward card offer, so when I signed up for the card, Amazon gave me an instant $30 off that applied immediately to my purchase. I basically bought this case for just $1.99. Thank you Amazon!

Royal EZVUE1 Personal Digital Assistant
- Schedule Planner
- ToDo list & memo book
- Stopwatch/countdown Timer
- Calculator
- Multi-language prompts
Good Features:
-There is a backlight feature.
-There is an actual keyboard under the touch screen. Well, I guess it isn't a keyboard, but a mini pad with all the letters of the alphabet, numbers, basic calc functions, @, period, space, del, edit, program, sym, ok, cap, power, link, menu buttons, scroll buttons, you get the picture. I like this feature because I can have multiple fingers working while making notes instead of using a styli to put them in one at a time.
-No waiting for it to "save" numbers and notes. It's very fast and efficient.
-Quick schedule pull-up. I can find the day I want with 2 taps. Same with the planner. And to-do list and phone book are also menu buttons on the keypad so its easy.
-The functions and how to go about doing things are to me pretty logical, like I don't have to keep referring to the manual because by instinct I navigate around or try a button and it does what I think it should do. It makes sense.
-But easy to understand manual
-Separate notes, to-do, scheduler, web book, and anniversary functions.
-Easily accessible world time option (you can switch between HOME time and world with just one click). Very cool, there are a TON of cities and capitals all over the world to choose from. (Right now mine is set for Athens, Greece!)
-Pretty light. Very thin. I'm in summer purse mode so my bag is tiny and this doesn't stretch it out at all.
-Comes with two extra styli
Things to be aware of:
-The keypad buttons would be a problem for someone with large or even average size hands/fingers. Probably guys. For me this wasn't a problem because I have small fingers.
-The screen seems to be very reflective. You can easily alter brightness, but that still leaves reflection and in an average lit room I think its harder than it should be to see the screen because there is this big face reflected and it's distracting.
-Memo notes are limited to 200 characters
-I have found myself switching between the styli and the keypad for one thing I want to do. The keypad works best for me for a lot of things and then in the middle it seems like the styli is the only option. Maybe its me, but I don't know if I like this.
-The cover covers the screen only. Its nice because it is attached to the pda and just flips over, but bad because in my opinion it should have covered the entire thing and snapped closed. Actually, I wish the half cover did snap, it doesn't seem very secure to me.
Still, overall I like this PDA. It's a small, affordable gadget, perfect for someone like me who doesn't want to put out big $$$, and doesn't mind something less powerful but still wants a decent PDA. Not to be a girl but I think its cute too. I'm a college student who is pretty much always on the go, so small efficient gadgets have become my thing.
Read my review of the the MP3 128 mb IRiver player too!this PDA was no good,it was new in package yet was broken, got batteries in it,turned in on and only HALF the screen works,so now I'm stuck with a broken piece of garbage,I'm only 14 and I worked hard and saved up to buy this and can't return it and get my money back or anything, wouldnt ever order this one again,it's a waste of money, the shipping was fast, but the sender did a very poor job packing it,it came in a box far to big with only 1 sheet of news paper to stop it from tumbling around in the box, which it obviously didnt do very well,it could very well be why it came broken.

AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 )
- Included are a full-size keyboard and a screen that's 3.5 times wider than the typical handheld screen.
- Virtually all Palm applications are compatible with Dana, and many are ready to take advantage of the wide screen.
She composes her writing assignments while sitting in a chair or on a sofa. She uses a lapdesk (that we purchased from Levenger, a mail-order company) when she works on our bed. Needless to say, she loves the Alphasmart Dana because it allows her to use it just like "Daddy's laptop," which she easily prefers over sitting at a desk and typing on a standard PC.
I also use the Alphasmart Dana for my own word processing (to write product reviews such as this one) while I'm waiting for my daughter or her brother at their sports or music practices. I have my own SD memory card to keep my work separate. And I like how I can import the text into a MS Word document open on my computer simply by hooking up a USB cable and hitting the function key marked "send." (Any receiving PC can accept the data and doesn't need to have the Alphasmart Palm desktop installed in order to do so.)
The standard dictionary and spell checker which comes with the Alphasmart Dana is fairly inadequate. I've downloaded the Noah Pro dictionary and thesaurus from PalmGear.com, and both are significantly better.
The formatting capabilities of the Alphaword program have been generally sufficient for most of my daughter's assignments. For those times when an extra level of "prettiness" is required, my wife will normally upload the text to a MS Word file, and format the document accordingly.
Neither my daughter nor I use the other Palm features (such as calendar, address book, to-do list, or memo) that's included. (I use my Palm 515 for those.) We use the Alphasmart strictly as a friendlier, more durable and less expensive version of a laptop computer. In this capacity, the Alphasmart Dana has performed wonderfully.
My daughter now loves to write and does so without any prompting. The Alphasmart Dana has proven to be an excellent investment. I highly recommend it!

I am studying a course in Computer Systems at University, I have a desktop in my halls but I wanted a laptop to use in lectures as I have a learning disabilty. I was recommended the Dana by a friend, for the price I think that it is a great piece of kit. The full size keyboard is a joy to type on, and the product itself is ALMOST indestructible (I know this as it gets bashed around in my bag). The widescreen is great when using Alphaword, although in most Palm applications there is a Dana logo on the left of the screen as most applications haven't been converted to run in widescreen. I would recommend purchasing an SD card as you can only store 8 files in the internal memory, which can be a bot of a problem if you are away from your PC and cannot hotsync. Overall this is a well made, cost effective and portable alternative to a laptop for word processing. Therefore, I would recommend this product to anyone.Read Best Reviews of AlphaSmart Dana - Handheld - Palm OS 4.1 ( 560 x 160 ) Here
I like writing on the go -in coffee shops, book stores, libraries(!), on my bed before I sleep... And my laptop didn't quite cut it because of power and size.I was a little apprehensive before buying the Dana because of dimension (too big and I wouldn't carry it), keyboard (I wanted a laptop feel), and screen (too small would be a problem)
but I am quite satisfied with all of the above.
Dana is light and compact. It is large in form, but no larger than a sub-compact notebook, and certainly much thinner and lighter. I put it in my bag/sack without hesitation.
The keyboard is terrific (looks and feels like an Apple keyboard) and the screen is, while not outstanding, good enough, with a nice backlight. It could be a little bigger -this is the reason I don't give it 5 stars -but I guess the engineers needed to make a trade-off here.
The rechargeable battery lasts a long time, certainly more than enough for lugging around without its charger for a day (and I'm sure it lasts a lot longer than this -just that I haven't tried it for more than a day).
I with the AlphaWord would let me change the default font (I like using Times New Roman and 20 points on the small screen). That would be my only complaint. With the supplied default font, however, I can use it without much difficulty so I am not too upset.
I haven't gotten around to using the Palm features, although I have a Palm Tungsten T so I doubt I ever will. I suspect my use is the sweet spot for the Dana -light word processing on the go. The previous reviewer's comment suggests the same.
Dana's website says that there will be an 802.11b ready version out in the future. This would be a pretty cool addition to an already useful product. As it is, I highly recommend it for people who like writing anywhere.

In General:First I want to make a disclaimer. I sell a lot of these on Amazon Marketplace. I also use one on a daily basis. This review was written on my Dana. It is so light and portable that I bring my Dana with me almost everywhere, in my car, on my walks, in the subway, on my bicycle, and even on my skateboard. I have sold several to people whom I met in this or that cafe while I was typing away on my Dana.
In the summer of 2010 I decided to write a book. But I found my laptop to be too cumbersome and I was always worried that it would get stolen whenever I had it with me in public. So I set about finding a writing tool which was portable and inexpensive. After trying several devices I found my match in Dana.
Dana provides me with excellent basic word processing abilities without the distraction of email, facebook, photoshop, youtube, or the internet in general. I have gotten more actual writing done in the half year since I started using Dana than in the 5 years previous with my laptop.
Dana & Windows 7 & 8:
Not gonna happen. Doesn't work. Unsupported. Fahget about it. Windows 7 has both compatibility mode and XP mode (these are not the same) and neither of them does beans for any AlphaSmart.
The only way to make a Dana useful is to have either a separate PC or a second hard drive booting good ole user-friendly Windows XP. I use my old XP laptop to sync my Dana to the same external drive to which my regular PC backs up. *Voila* Problem solved.
Do NOT buy a Dana if you use Windows 7 and are not willing to do this extra step. This will probably apply to Windows 8 as well.
Supposedly (according to RenLearn) you CAN sync from Windows 7 if you use the IR pod. But I haven't verified this. (as of 9/1/12)
Writing On The Go:
Dana provides excellent distraction free basic word processing capabiity in an extremely portable package. Dana saves files as Rich Text. You have the same functions found in programs like MS WordPad. You can indent, bold, italicize, and make bullet lists. The keyboard is one of the best I have ever used. It is like typing on silk. The keys are concave to fit the shape of your finger tips, they depress easily, and have gentle but firm return. You can save as many files as will fit in the 8MB or 16MB of memory. Dana also has an excellent built in screen-backlight in case you are typing in dim light, as I often do.
Dana is way more durable than a laptop and weighs only about 2 pounds and fits easily in most backpacks. I often type with Dana on my lap without any discomfort. It turns on in about one and half seconds and is usually ready to work before I am. Because Dana is so energy efficient I have never had the batteries drop dead on me. And since Dana can recharge through the USB port and I sync my Dana to my PC every day that I write they will probably never go dead on me. According to the manufacturer specs, Dana can run up to 25 hours on a single charge.
Cables & Software:
People often ask me about cables and getting information to their computer. With Dana this is very easy. The manufacturer provides free downloadable desktop software for Mac & PC which backs up and syncs all the data between Dana and you computer. The software is Palm OS based and includes all the features found on the old Palm Pilots. The calendar is an excellent stand-alone application.
Cables are not a problem. Even though there are several ports in the back of Dana, the only one you really need is the USB port. Dana takes a type-B USB cable. This is the same kind that goes to your USB printer. These can be purchased easily and cheaply. These are so common that you may already have an extra one. And odds are that even if you don't have one, your friend or neighbor does. Maybe if you ask they will give it to you.
Dana has a an additional USB printer port for direct printing. But I haven't tried it as I always print from my PC. Though it will power one of those twisty USB-powered LED lamps. Now I can type in the dark.
Batteries and Dana:
Beware of used Danas that "include" a rechargeable battery. These batteries may be, and frequently are, eight to ten years old. A Dana with an old battery will frequently crash and lose data, even if it's "backed-up" on the SD card. The solution: replace the battery. You can buy a new rechargeable battery pack for less than $20 from renlearn.com
Dana will run fine on normal AA batteries. But you must use alkalines. If you try to use store bought rechargeables , Dana will not turn on. You can make it work with store bought rechargeables by rewiring Dana's insides just a little. You snip two wires, wind them together. Then do it again to two different wires. I did that to mine. To do it well takes about 45 minutes and you have to be careful about the circuit boards. There are detailed instructions online. It's a lot easier than it looks at first. The best thing about this hack is that you can use your own batteries and recharge them by plugging Dana into a USB port, though you lose the ability to safely use alkaline batteries. I found this trade-off to be completely acceptable for myself. If you do a search for "Dana battery hack" you'll find the site by V. Fry where I learned to do this.
What You Should be Aware of When Buying A Used Dana
Some Danas are sold by individuals who are the first owner and used it for their own writing. Most, probably over 95%, were owned first by schools and sold off in large lots. These are often grimy and dirty beyond belief with old stickers and food stuck to them. These require a thorough cleaning. In my experience About 1 in 5 also often have other problems. Sometimes the system board is bad and the thing won't work (very bad.) There are a litany of problems that can occur with used Danas. Sometimes it can be lived with, other times it can be fixed with a reset, and other times it means you need to get a different Dana. Most work fine. Almost all of them have some scratches on the case or screen.
The Dana Stylus
You can actually get by without one. A ball point pen cap or a pinky fingernail works well enough. But it is nice to have a stylus on hand. There is a little slot in the side of the Dana into which the stylus clicks. The default stylus is black. You can also get a colored stylus in red, yellow, purple, blue, and green.
Is Dana Right For You?
If you are a writer looking for a tough, portable writing tool then almost certainly the answer is Yes! Dana should be synced every day or so that you write. If you are going to be near your computer most days but don't want to haul your laptop around with you, then Dana is an excellent choice. Dana is Palm OS 4 based. This means that if your batteries die, you lose all of your data. So if you plan to be away from a recharge point for more than a couple of days then you need something with more data stability. An AlphaSmart 3000 is an excellent choice for that because they are more durable than a Dana and won't experience data loss when main power fails. The 3000 however only saves files in plain text and has an 87 page limitation.
If you are looking for a device for your child then you should take into consideration the child's level of technical aptitude and motivation to write. Dana requires a level of mindfulness that many young children have not yet developed. Dana needs to be synced to the PC and recharged very regularly. A less challenging alternative would be the AlphaSmart 3000 mentioned above....I find this portable word-processor a wonderful gadget. It's a lot tougher than most laptops, as well as lighter and less expensive. Also, the batteries last a lot longer. So I take it with me whenever I don't wish to lug my computer around. I also like the fact it can store up to eight documents, as well as upload the document to almost any word-processing programme on the computer.
The one drawback I find is that the machine only works with basic font. It does not have a footnote, italics, bold or underline function -all of which would be handy. I also suggest you pay the extra and get the built-in rechargeable battery pack as well as the carrying case, since each of these makes the AlphaSmart much more convenient to travel with.
