I really don't like schlepping the DR-1 around in my pocket for field recordings and I certainly don't want it visible in the majority of cases so when I found the Gomadic case, it appeared to be the answer to my dreams. Unfortunately it sits on a shelf in the foxy pouch it shipped in, totally useless. I liked the act that it might masquerade as a PDA but none of the openings in the case let one access the MIC 1 IN jack without cutting the pouch. I imagine some marketer at Gomadic was brainstorming an existing product that was not selling well and decided it would be perfect for the DR-1, without ever so much as sliding a DR-1 into the case. Typical of the new age marketers that seem to populate the planet. They can "talk the talk" but not only are they unable to walk, they seem to be unable to crawl. But, I digress.

The case is well made though large for the DR-1. It comes with a removable, very positive "belt" clip and a nice magnetic catch plus a cloth storage pouch as I mentioned previously. Should you want to run your belt through the belt cut-outs, you'll require the assistance of Hercules to effect that feature. Ergo, don't bother.

All in all, had I an opportunity to do a hands-on prior to purchasing this product, I would not have slide the plastic. I guess it's time to visit the largest on-line garage sale in the world and hawk my wares.

Not a bad little case, considering the price, but you get what you pay for. One thing to note is that the actual case differs from the image in Amazon's product listing in the following ways:

There's no separate cut-out for the power button. It's just one big oblong opening for all the buttons.

The spaces for credit/business cards aren't as nice as they appear; they're just slots in the lining (total of three).

There are also two "half-width" slots in the lining, each wide enough to hold a Secure Digital memory card.

Pros:

Zire 31 fits snugly into the case.

Case feels very sturdy.

Compact design means it doesn't take up too much room.

Snap button for secure enclosure.

Cons:

Getting the stylus out is a bit difficult, and there's no alternate place to store it either.

Belt clip is detachable, but it attaches to a "nub" that's permanently protruding from the rear of the case. If you don't use the clip, the nub is just sticking out, preventing you from ever lying the case completely flat.

No cut-out for the USB connector and AC adapter plug, which would have been really easy for Belkin to do, meaning you have to pull the Zire out slightly to use those ports.

Conclusion: A good case for the price, but small improvements would make it a lot better.

Not only does it not fit the Zire 72 (the opening is at least half and inch too small for the screen), but the case I received even had a seriously offset hole for the bottom buttons. I've had decent Belkin products before, but this was real disappointing.

Upon receiving scanner, I used the included 120V to USB adapter and USB cable to charge the scanner and installed an 8gb microSD card.

The quality of the scan using it as a "hand/wand scanner" was excellent. You may need to practice to avoid slanted scans, but the quality is very good, even at low quality setting (300dpi).

I then docked the scanner to the dock and used the automatic sheet feeder. Again the scan quality is excellent even at the medium and low dpi settings. NOTE !!!! (I missed this at first!!!) The dock MUST be connected to power using the ac adapter/usb cable to use the dock !!!! When used as a hand/wand scanner, the built-in lithium battery will power it.

For letter sized originals, for BOTH color and B/W copying; the scan times (when docked) are: LOW (300dpi) 8 seconds, MEDIUM (600dpi) 10 seconds and HIGH (1200dpi) 12 seconds. A class 6 minimum microSD card is recommended for scanning while docked at 1200dpi. The scanner can produce either jpg or pdf files from the scan.

A light weight bag is provided to store the wand/hand held scanner portion. ABBYY FineReader 9.0 software is provided on a CD (Win2000/Server 2003/XP/Vista/7. As of this review, I have not yet tried this software.

This scanner works very well. It takes a bit of time to set up so reading the directions is a must. I had to buy a Micro memory card which I didn't know about but that is minor. This easily scans documents and pictures. I have not tried hand held scanning yet. I did find this would NOT scan old Polaroid pictures via the attached scanner bar to the base unit. It is fast and accurate, I love the choice of DPI to scan.

It took a long time to get because it came from China, but I still received it earlier than was expected and it works great with the Blackberry Torch. Case is great quality, was delivered earlier than expected... But sadly I cannot put it to use as the placement of the magnets freezes up my blackberry torch.I tried removing the magnets in the back of the case and one in the front under the logo on the flap. Still no good. My phone works fine out of the case but as soon as I encase it the touch screen becomes frozen... I am sad as the case really is very nice, back to the drawing board $29 out of pocket, and still no protection for my phone.

After purchasing this product it took a long time to get to it destination. In addition, the case has a magnetic front that messes up the phone. At first I thought it was just phone and went to my carrier and couldn't figure it out what was wrong. So I decided to remove it from the case for a week. During that week, my phone did not act up at all. While in the carrier, the phone would freeze or turn off by it self but now it work just fine. I bought the N810 (had been considering the N800 a long time) and this really is a great internet tablet.

I think Nokia has it right in no tmaking it a phone too (and locked down). Firstly the wifi is super on this and detects wifi better than my laptop.

The OS is very fast and spiffy and the software feels like its running on a desktop fast.

You can connect to 3G thru the phone over bluetooth (provided you have a data plan) and that gives me always connected and on status. I call my parents in India now ofrom any place using Gizmo, or Google talk . Its a great tablet for VoIP. Just have to wait some more for Skype to also work on this soon.

As a music player and Video player its superb. Great album art also included in some apps like Kagu and UKMP. Though the music quality is a wee bit lacking in comparison to a good mp3 player (like my iRiver).

It's not a PDA, so many of regular PDA apps are missing but again thanks to open source community (and to Nokia for making it an open device) you can install some basic PIM apps too.

Best of all is internet browsing for people who need access to the web a lot while being mobile THSI IS THE DEVICE. Support flash very well (and hence Youtube too).

And lastly the screen is fabulous. Very sharp and crisp and bright all web sites on the browser is very easy to read even on this small a device thanks to the screen resolution.

And lastly the GPS is good does not replace a full featured dedicated GPS device but good for a handy GPS navigation.

I upgraded from the N770 to the N810 and am very impressed. For the average user, it provides a Firefox-based web browser with Flash 9, capable of displaying all modern web sites, unheard of for a mobile device. It can display, GMail, Google Docs, YouTube, Mint.com and more. It supports Google Talk, Gizmo and Skype for making voice calls over the web. The media player can display high quality full screen video. The built-in stereo speakers mean you won't be hunting for your earbuds every time you want to hear some music. Software updates can be performed on the device, without help from a computer. Internet access is available through wifi or a Bluetooth connection to a web-enabled phone. I've read many reviewers that don't like the keyboard. It is a bit short and butts up against the screen, but you easily get used to it after a few hours. In any case, it beats the iPhone's virtual keyboard and the Blackberry's tiny keypad any day. Having actual backlit keys that you can actually touch and actually press down without your thumbs smurging onto other keys by accident is rewarding. The GPS is not slow, but the receiver is quite weak. You must have a very clear view of the sky to use it.

Those who want more from the N810 can enable the "maemo Extras" repository in the application manager. That gives you access to great software, including Maemo Mapper, a free GPS mapping program, Pidgin multi client IM app, Canola media center, Video Center video podcast client, plenty of games and more. Try to get FBReader too. It's a wonderful ebook reader.

I bought a N770 a couple years ago, and it had a dead pixel (but I didn't return it). I ordered N810 2 weeks ago, and it also had a dead pixel. This time, I returned the N810 not only because of the dead pixel, but also because of many usability problems.

The two primary reasons I bought the N810 were the slide-out keyboard and the built-in GPS. The slide-out keyboard is good for finger typing (rather than using a stylus tapping on the touch screen as in N770), but it creates several problems. First, since the four-way rocker key is on the keyboard, I don't like the fact that I cannot use the four way rocker to scroll the screen up and down unless I also expose the keyboard (The menu button is also on the keyboard; but you can use the tiny on-screen menu key as a substitute). Second, the "up" key of the rocker key is so close to the edge of the screen, making it very difficult to press it (even though I have small hand). Sometimes I pressed the center "select" button inadvertently as a result. Third, the zoom buttons and the full screen button are all located on the upper edge of the keyboard, not of the screen. If the keyboard is slided out, it is difficult to access the zoom buttons and the full-screen button.

The GPS is VERY slow to detect the satellites. I understand that GPS needs to take more time to detect the satellites for the first time. But I never thought it would take THAT long. I have owned two generations of bluetooth GPS over the last four years, the GPS performance of the N810 is either comparable or worse than my older version.

The video (playing youtube) is acceptable. However, I downloaded a 720 x 320 pixel MP4 video, and N810 said it doesn't accept this resolution.

If you agree that the keyboard problems are relevant to your usage habit, and the GPS is not acceptable if it is too slow, then you should consider buying the N800 which does everything like N810 (N800 does not have keyboard and GPS). N800 also allows you to put more internal memory than N810. I just ordered one and it is about $200 cheaper.

I have now had my N810 for a week and still love it.

It does come with several applications that will get you running from the time you get it out of the box. But there are many-many more available, some replacements, but many add functionality.

I connected to my home Wi-Fi within minutes, and have tried it out in many hot spots without any trouble. The GPS locks on in the same amount of time as my hand held GPS.

I am still working on getting podcasts to feed automatically, but see that the installed video player will do that.

Kudos:

Small form factor (Why I bought this over the Asus EEE-Pc.)

Great battery life (4-6 hours use, 6 days standby with minor tweaking.)

Good keyboard; in the open mode, full screen and half screen.

Handwriting recognition takes practice but works well. (It messes up in the xterm program however.)

Built in stand also serves as hand loop.

Perceived Faults:

Volume is too low in playback mode with anything other than the built in video player.

It would be good to have a tether point for an optional wrist-strap.

Camera is not very high resolution.

Recommended add-ons:

Better case (Nintendo DS-Lite cases work very well.)

Auto charger (Nokia phone charger with the small plug.)

Mini SD card for multi-media content.

Screen protector sheet.

Bluetooth Headset. (I use the Jabra-BT8010.)

Update: (A few weeks later.)

I have found that the video center program will work well with podcasts. (I combine it with Yahoo Pipes to consolidate about 10 feeds into 2.) Battery life is very dependent upon your use. If you turn off WiFi, you will get a lot more time in use and standby. Offline mode works very well to do this when you don't need bluetooth and wifi (Listening with headphones, reading e-books.) otherwise you can set it to only look for wifi when you need to and leave the bluetooth on.

There is more software out there than you should ever need, as this is linux based, nearly everything is possible. I still haven't tried Skype, but have no need for it at this time. One of the greatest uses I have put this to is portable network access, I just SSH to a server and run whatever I need it to.

Update: 6 Months later.

Still in love, I hardly use my laptop anymore. While the GPS does take a while to get it's fix if you are moving it works very well for GeoCaching. Plenty of battery life for 2 hours of movie watching on a flight plus reading e-text books for several hours. I have now used it for skype and am happy with the way it works. While I do have trouble listening to Pandora.com with it (Bandwidth issues at home,) I do use it to listen to my Ampache server flawlessly over wifi at my home.

I bought the Nokia N810 as a PDA replacement, which, strictly speaking, is not what Nokia sells it to do. Out of the box, it has a solid feel, and the keyboard slider does not feel like it's going to fall apart unlike some other products with similar features.

The focus of this device is Internet access, and Nokia integrated 802.11b/g support, which works very well. Internet access via cellular telephones is a different story. For some reason, Nokia chose to implement Bluetooth DUN, rather than Bluetooth PAN. BT DUN is an older (most people consider it to be obsolete) protocol that Microsoft recently removed from the default Windows Mobile 6 build. BT PAN is much more widely accepted, and is a far superior choice. Only time will tell if Nokia decides to add the updated protocol. There IS a connectivity option for buyers with non-Nokia phones. A product called PDANet allows newer telephones without BT DUN support to speak to devices that only support BT DUN. This is a commercial product, but is well worth the money if you have a new phone. I have used this product for several weeks, and can confirm that it works as advertised. If you have a phone that does not support BT DUN, I strongly recommend buying PDANet before you recieve the N810. This will allow you to complete the initial configuration wizard on the N810.

As far as other features, the N810 screen is very nice, with a bright backlight. The screen is easily readable, even in sunlight. The built-in speaker is decent, but you will want to use the included headphones to listen to anything that you actually care about hearing. The keyboard is a little tough to use, due to the tension in the keys, but it is okay once you get used to it. The processor is capable, and loading times for applications is reasonable. The GPS functionality works well, but you should be prepared to purchase the upgraded map application if you intend to use the N810 for navigation. One caveat with the GPS for some reason, the unit is EXTREMELY slow to obtain an initial satellite fix if you are moving. Staying still for about 2 minutes or so will allow the device to obtain (and keep) a satellite fix.

Aside from the BT DUN problem, my only gripe about the N810 is the lack of sufficient memory card expansion. The device comes with an internal 2GB memory "card" that cannot be removed/upgraded, along with a single Mini-SD card slot. This means that as of today, this device cannot handle more than 10GB total. That could be much better. In addition, the Mini-SD port is difficult to close. This port was an exceptionally poor design in my opinion.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the Nokia N810. I believe that it will serve my intended purpose very well. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it does work if you put a little effort into setting it up.

In my seller review I gave this product a 4 star and the only reason for that was the elastic used for closure and lack of a stylus holder; otherwise it would have been a 5. The elastic used for closure is very thin and I believe eventually it will stretch out. So my recommendation would be for them to use a broader and thicker elastic or even a magnetic closure flap. Nevertheless it still closes fine even without the elastic over it so I'm good.

If you don't quite like pink like me don't worry, this is a mild pink that can be tolerated and makes you look girly enough :-).

Bought this for my wife's Flyer. It's OK I guess. The product quality is average at best. The fit is pretty decent. I wouldn't buy one again for another tablet. If you need a "cute" pink tablet cover this one is alright.

I ordered this product to demo iPad applications. The feature set looked great and would allow me to demo in person through a projector, record to AVI or MOV or online by using the device as a web camera. The documentation proclaims that both Windows and OS X are supported. In at least 2 places in the manual it says that the device can be used as a Web Cam when connected to a computer via USB. In neither place does it specify an operating system dependency but after an hour or two of frustration the AverMedia tech support folks told me (unappolegetically) that the web cam feature isn't supported on OS X (I double checked this isn't specified anywhere in their literature, documentation, FAQ, etc.)

While the web cam feature didn't work, the included Aver+ software did display the video from the device on my Mac. The image on the computer was horribly pixilated from compression even as a small image on my my screen it certainly didn't feel like 5MP. The image that is output to the VGA output is much better. The biggest problem that I had with the image was that when I tried to display the iPad screen the auto focus feature pretty worthless and a sort of grid appeared on the images on the iPad screen.

This product would be okay in a classroom displaying papers and small 3D objects but I was really disappointed in the image quality for displaying the iPad screen. And for $700, I expect the manufacture to be upfront about what does and does not work.

Introduction

This is my review on the Asus MyPal A626 Pocket PC PDA. It is a pure PDA, not a phone, though does have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities.

The basic specs are as follows:

-Windows Mobile Edition 6 with mobile office

-3.5" 320x240 16k color touch screen

-802.11g and bluetooth

-3.7V 1200mAh L-ion Battery

-3.5mm headphone jack, SDIO slot, speaker, microphone, Ir

Build and first impression

First off, the build quality appears and feels quite good. The front Is a brushed steel or chrome with shiny chrome on the edges. The backside of the PDA is a soft gray plastic. The buttons are solid and have a nice feel, but the 4 task buttons are positioned to high to really make good controls if you plan on using emulators or some games on it. Also, the PDA is designed to be held either portrait or landscape, but assume I am holding it portrait when I am referring to it.

The top of the PDA has the centered power button and and offset SD slot. The right side has the 3.5mm headphone jack, hold slider, and stylus. The left side has the USB port. The bottom side has the Ir and reset button. The microphone is above the screen on the front, and the speaker and indicator lights are below the buttons.

Everything is well placed and convenient. My only complaint here is the bright LED indicator lights being right under the buttons, as they are bright and blink instead of staying on steady. I would have preferred them be on top or something less intrusive to the eye.

Basic Usage

Well, coming originally from Pocket PC 2002, I was interested in seeing what was added/changed in Windows Mobile Edition 6. (WME6)

For one thing, it's more Vista like in it's loading bars and in it's resource management. On initial boot, it is already using half of the available RAM, leaving only about 34MB for your programs to run in. Conversely, my PPC2002 device had 64MB, and the left about 42-48MB for program storage and usage. Also, with this device, Windows and your programs are actually stored in the built in flash, Although it has 256MB (probably 248MB or so once converted), only 174MB is available to the user. However, it does come with a lot more, which justifies the OS becoming much larger.

My PCC2002 was a light version to save on memory, so word didn't even have spell check. Well that is there now, excel now does graphics, and there is a power point viewer. Additionally, there are built in drivers and settings for WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. They have also added Transcriber, a new way to write, which I'll give more detail on later.

Other notable new features for people comming from older PPCs are the CPU management, which is adjustable, portrait and landscape rotation, and quick tasks in the bottom right of the "Today" screen. The device is pretty responsive under default settings, but if you put the CPU to "Maximum", it is very responsive, though you sacrifice battery life. I keep it on "auto" most of the time, which is sufficient for most tasks.

The device is comfortable to hold, thought the telescoping stylus is overly light and short, primarily because it comes out of the short side of the device. However, the stylus and screen work well together and are pretty accurate and easy to use. The screen requires just the right amount of effort IMHO.

Audio

Many people like the idea of the iPhone because it is a phone, PDA, and Music player all in one. However, a PPC device can play audio as well, and some do quite a good job of it. The sound of the ASUS through it's headphone jack is just above average. If anything, it's a little flat at it's default settings, so I go to the audio settings, where you get a bass and treble slider, each from -2 to +2, starting at 0. I found +2 for treble and +1 for bass works well for my music and headphones, but I'm sure this varies between headphones used. It also has a 3D setting for sound, which is a slider with about 18 stops, with 0 as the default. I liked it on about 5. With these settings on my headphones, most of my music sounded quite good, with good detail and minimal distortion. However, on songs with heavy deep bass, it didn't distort or quiet, but it could be a little sloppy with some of those notes. Nothing major. Volume levels will go high enough for most, and unless you have the bass on +2 and max the volume with some heavy bass music, you won't get distortion. I used the included Windows Mobile 10 for music, as well as TCPMP for music and AV.

Overall, sound quality is on a similar level to an iPod, but there are some portable music devices out there with better sound. Definitely usable!

Video Playback

With TCPMP, this device is excellent at playing AV. I actually found a patch for TCPMP that allows the device to play flash videos, so I can get on youtube or a similar service and watch the videos full screen on my PDA. They are as smooth as a regular PC is with the high compression video. I have also done a quick test with Divx files on an SD card, but it was a lower bit rate one, which played fine. I have yet to try a higher bitrate Divx video yet, but I don't think it will have trouble. I update this once I give that a go.

The screen is a pleasure to watch video on. While it won't be that bright in direct sunlight, the backlight is even and color seems fairly accurate an pleasing. I give this device props over video iPods because of it's larger screen and ability to play more formats, though will have less space unless you stock up on SD cards.

Battey Life

This is actually a strong point of this PDA. Even with it's modest 1200mAh battery, it's usage life is about 4-24 hours. If you set your playist up, and just let it play at moderate volume with the device on hold so the screen is off, you should easily get over 20 hours. Playing a high bit rate video with the backlight turned up should yield about 4-6 hours. Internet usage with the WiFi on isn't a whole lot better than palying video, but all things considering, I think this is excellent battery life. My HP iPaq 1910 only got 3-6 hours for all tasks, even in it's prime, and had difficulty playing anything but video tailored to it, and that was overclocked.

Software Issues

My only real complaint about this PDA is that Windows Mobile Edition 6, and reported 5 as well, have problems running older PPC software properly. The emulators made for ARM processors and PPC2000-2003 run significantly slower on this device thant hey did on my older, slower PPC2002 iPaq 1910. I am having a hard time finding newer emulators that were made for the newer OS, so I am kind of stuck for now. So if you have specific older software you want to run on it, try the software on a WME5 or 6 device first to see if it has any issues.

I was very happy to find the ASUS to come with an extra stylus and a simple soft case for the device. It also came with a USB cable, a wall charger, 3 CDs. and the booklets. The package was very good, and made me feel that ASUS really cares what their customer think.

[b]Conclusion and Who it's for[/b]

The ASUS MyPal A626 is an excellent PDA overall. It has no significant weaknesses, it comes well equipped for the price, and if you know what you are getting, you should be very happy with it.

So who is the Asus A626 for? It is for someone who wants a PDA that can do more than schedule, but you don't need it as a GPS or Cell Phone. The built in flash is ALOT of space for a PPC, as most programs are only 500KB to a few MB, so you can fill it up with programs, and still have the SD slot available. Personally, I don't want my PDA and phone to be the same device, because I don't want to have to not use my PDA so my phone doesn't die, or vice versa. I like having the two devices separately, though you can communicate the two with bluetooth. I would like to see the ability to bluetooth your contacts to your phone, too.

This device has a huge list of things it can do. Scheduling, Music, Video, Voice Recording, Notes, Typing, Games, Internet, and much more with appropriate software or addons. No, it's not also a cell phone, but it doesn't claim to be, so if you're not expecting it, it is a great device, all for about $300.

I lost my Palm TX and because I was having so many problems with it, I decided to search for a new, more reliable PDA. It was difficult to find because everything else with the same capability came with phone service. The new Asus was not given much attention by reviewers because it wasn't a phone. (Not everyone wants to rely on an all-in-one product). Fortunately I decided to take a chance on the Asus and it is the best PDA I have owned. I have had my ASUS for two months now. Battery life is great and I have never had to reset it--both constant problems with the TX). The screen is clear and easy to read. It comes with a very nice slip holder--not the cheap kind you get with other PDA's. It has a very nice solid feel to it and is easy to hold. The bundled software is Windows Mobile and I was able to adapt to the change from a Palm OS system. I have found that there is a wide choice of outside vendor programs to download on Handango.com. Enough to meet my needs. (Reviewers of PDA's often promote the Palm because it has more software available) If you want a great PDA without a phone get the ASUS. You won't regret it.

I spent a great deal of time checking out all PDAs that came with wireless connections. I checked out HP, Dell and Palm and was leaning toward the Palm TX till I came across the ASUS MyPal A626. What caught my eye was the Wireless 802.11b/g connection. The other devices only came with Wireless 802.11b which is approximately five times slower that 802.11g.

This device says it comes with 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM and Microsoft Windows 5.0, but it actually comes as an upgrade (it says so on the box) and has 128MB, 256MB ROM and Windows Mobile 6.0. It also comes with a mini USB cable for syncing, an AC adapter for recharging, and an extra stylus (very nice, it is resizable) and three CDs that include extra software and Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5.

The installed software includes Office Mobile with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Media Player, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Windows Live, Messenger and many others. The programs all run well and fast.

I tried the Wireless 802.11g connection at my local library. I simply clicked on the small icon on the Today screen and selected Enable WiFi. The device quickly connected to the library's WiFi network and I launched IE and was online. The browser loads pages the same as on a desktop/laptop. The speed was suprisingly good. Faster than dialup--comparable to a slow DSL connection (as opposed to the faster 768k DSL). I would recommend downloading the Opera Mobile browser from Opera's website as it includes multiple tabbed browsing which IE does not.

Only two minor drawbacks to this whole package. First, the case it comes with is ok, but hardly strong enough to protect the screen very well. So be careful with it. I would suggest buying a solid metal case to carry your MyPal around in. Second, ActiveSync 4.5 would not install on my computer from the CD. Big problem since you need it to transfer files. The CD kept saying I needed to install Flash 8.0 or later--but it was installed and both my browsers (IE and Mozilla Firefox) were running Flash fine. What to do? Just go to Microsoft's website, type Mobile in the search box and then download ActiveSync 4.5 from their site. It will install easily without using Flash.

This is a great device. The best on the market and the only one with Wireless 802.11 g. I highly recommend it.

Pros: nice built, nice screen, decent touch surface, good wi-fi, decent battery life, etc... all is as spec'd.

Cons:

does not reconnect the SD card after resuming from standby. You cannot really use it like an MP3 player keeping your music on the card. Every time you power it on/resume you have to remove and reinsert the card to reconnect it.

very annoying and distracting bright LED blinking under the ASUS logo (under the mask) when connected to wi-fi (which is all the time, for me).

As most electronics these days, a product rushed to market without proper usability testing.

Follow up:

Installed the firmware update from the Asus site, SD card issue solved.

I also had an issue with some full screen applications not displaying properly. Installed the (older) LCD display update patch and this issue was solved also.

They could have included this older display patch in the newer firmware patch.

Also, they could have notified me of these updates, as I had registered the product. What is the point of registering then?

Since starting to use bluetooth, I notice the similarly annoying blue blinking LED.

There is also an issue with reconnecting my bluetooth device after resuming from sleep.

I feel I should up my rating to 3.5 stars.

This case is durable and looks good. I carried my 770 around more once I had this case. It is a perfect fit! The only thing I don't like is the belt clip but this is mostly because of the Nokia 770's size and not because of the case. I highly recommend this case!

Despite the fact that people complain about this drive being slow, the fact remains that they all are using Windows. Windows, both XP and Vista have two factors that make this drive suck when used with Windows.

These are the following:

A. Windows has a ton of background processes that always are accessing the disk, such as the indexing service and system restore.

B. Windows uses NTFS, a dilapidated old filesystem that is very inefficient, and it's journaling doesn't suffice with these drives. It's probable that even SLC (the "faster" models) will still be just as slow as a result of running Windows.

That said, I, a Linux user am extremely impressed and satisfied. I formatted this drive with the ext3 filesystem, using the noatime,notail,data=writeback options, which speed things even more. I am getting insane amounts of speed out of this little guy. Boot speed hasn't changed, as I already had it optomized as much as possible, and all the time my boot takes is 11 seconds. It would be less if the kernel did more things in parallel, but anyway, mechanical or not, throughput really doesn't have any bearing on boot speed after a while, unless you haven't hacked your init scripts to speed things up...

Anyway, apps start incredibly fast, latency is near real time, and I am very happy. If you have questions, please drop by #zen-sources on irc.freenode.net and ask me (ilikenwf) about this little fella.

I have a feeling using it with OSX would probably be pretty good too, I haven't tried using jfs with this drive, though. I will try ext4 when it is more stable, as it is even faster.

So far, I get sequential write speeds of around 126MB/sec, which is twice as fast as my mechanical drive. Random write isn't far behind. Those are far above the benchmarks given on the packaging, and I'd say this is an incredible deal. Go for it, if you use anything other than Windoze.

Windows XP installation took about 4 hours before I just gave up.

I own a Samsung 1.8" SSD in a Toshiba Libretto U100 that is lightning fast compared to this Transcend piece of junk.

Very disappointed. I recommend staying away.

I've tried to install Windows XP on this drive twice. The drive formated instantly. First few megabytes copied very fast and then it slowed down to a crawl. I repeated the process after waiting for 4 hours with "Time Remaining" stuck at 39 min., with the same results. Then I placed the drive in an external usb enclosure to see what's going on. The formating takes a few seconds. During file transfer to the SSD drive the first 8-9MB copy really fast, then it slows down to a crawl. 18GB took at least 2 hours to copy onto this drive. I would stay away from it.

My experience mirrors the others above. I installed the product in a regular PC, one I had built and was using as an HTPC, so I wanted an SSD to make the system more quiet. Very quick format, over four hours to install XP. I stuck with it anyways. Anytime I do anything once I'm in XP, it's VERY slow. It takes about 4-5 minutes for any random application to load (like JRiver Media Center, Adobe Reader, Firefox, etc). If I right click on My Computer for the purpose of pulling up the properties to get to the device manager, it'll take anywhere from 6-7 minutes to get into the device manager. If I then take another 3-5 minutes to get into the task manager and then processes, it shows my that the system idle process on the CPU usually sits in the high 90s, so there's nothing else going on in the background. I reinstalled the old fashioned HDD, and the problem went away. This product is an absolute dud, Transcend should issue a prompt recall. I was thinking about exchanging it thinking maybe I got a bad unit, but apparently, mine operates exactly like any other fully functional drive does and is not defective. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

According to what I read on tech review sites, this drive uses the JMicron JMF602B controller, which supposedly have very bad random write performance (around 6 write operations per second). However, my own tests using fio on a ThinkPad X30 (circa 2003) painted a very different picture:

Sequential read: 58MB/s (14,600 IO/s)

Sequential write: 20MB/s (5,000 IO/s)

4KB random read: 15MB/s (3,700 IO/s)

4KB random write: 1.1MB/s (285 IO/s)

The 4KB random write performance is not that great compared to drives that use the Indilinx Barefoot controller (such as RunCore Pro IV), but the numbers I got in my own benchmark is 45 times better than the number (6 IO/s) reported by tech review sites. Maybe Transcend and JMicron solved the problem with JMF602B, or maybe the low random write performance problem is specific only to Windows. Who knows? All I can tell you is that this drive works great in Linux, and that is all that matters to me.

In comparison, here are the benchmark results I got for my Hitachi 5K100 5400rpm 100GB (mechanical) hard drive:

Sequential read: 37MB/s

Sequential write: 32MB/s

4KB random read: 0.46MB/s

4KB random write: 0.8MB/s

Note the drastic difference in random read performance.

This iPaq gets none of the love it deserves. In truth, it is the best stand-alone PDA available on the market. First, let me address the immediate complaints made about the 4705.

1. Price

Um, get a paper route. This is the highest end device of its kind, because of its speedy processor, VGA screen, and extras which are packed into the device. There are Pocket PCs available for much less money, but with lower price you sacrifice quality.

2. Size

Seven Ounces, the size of a pack of index cards. This PDA fits in your front pants or jacket pocket, and form factor dictates that it be that big to accomodate the large screen.

3. Screen flip cover.

This is removable. I've never understood this complaint.

4. Touchpad.

Using a floating cursor, like a laptop computer is actually a huge convenience. Using the pad as a navigation director isn't easy, so be aware of that before purchasing.

Anyway. The 4705 runs on a very fast processor, and can handle several tasks at once. The VGA screen displays 640X480 pixels, making videos, games, and websites absolutely gorgeous to view. There is tons of built-in memory, as well as SD and CF slots to accomadate another 3 GB of storage. This is more than enough room for all your videos, music, photos, games, and PIM. Pocket Informant is included, to manage your Notes, Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts. It integrates with Outlook for your Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, and Inbox. ActiveSync 3.8 works very quickly, and you'll have no problem taking both your office, and your personal life with you on the go. Microsoft Office is included, so you have both Word and Excel. You can read, edit, write, and print documents and spreadsheets. These can be transferred to and from your computer. Windows Media Player 9.0 is included, allowing you to listen to .wma files, or watch .wmv files. A free e-book reader can be found to allow you to read books on the device, and if you subscribe to Audible.com, you can listen to books. There are literally hundreds of games that you can find for the device that are mind blowingly realistic graphics-wise. Some are free, some cost a small fee to download. HP Image Zone lets you make slideshows of your favorite photo albums. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also integrated in the device. This means you have two options of accessing the internet at any given time. Wi-Fi means that you can get a high speed internet connection near a Wi-Fi hotspot such as a coffeehouse, hotel, airport, office, home network, etc. If you're not near a Wi-Fi area, you can connect at dial-up speed using a Bluetooth modem. I use my Motorola V710 phone from Verizon. This may cost more, so check with your wireless company. All in all, this device is a life saver. To recap, I use this iPAQ to:

1. Maintain my Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Inbox

2. Keep all documents and spreadsheets handy

3. View all my photos

4. Read ebooks

5. Connect to the internet whenever, wherever

6. Play numerous PC consolequality video games

7. Listen to hours and hours of music

8. Watch video, including full length DVD movies

9. Record notes

And tons more! This iPAQ is worth every penny you'll pay for it. And if you have a job that involves anything more complex than soaking french fries, it will basically pay for itself, because you'll save hours from your job. The question isn't: Should you buy the HP iPAQ 4705? The question is: You haven't bought the HP iPAQ 4705 yet?!

Ive had this device for about 2 weeks and I can just say its amazing! It is bigger than most PDA's but it is not an uncofortable size. You can easily put it in your briefcase and forget about it. The screen is superb... Ive placed a few pictures of me and mi girl and the look great, its like having a mini album in your pocket.

The wireless capabilities have an outstanding range and hold a steady connection.

BATTERY LIFE: It will easilly give you 4 days without having to recharge.

TOUCHPAD: It is very weird and hard to get used to it... but its not hard enough as to say its a disadvantage.

EXPANTION SLOTS: Cards are easy to acces, and the blend in beatifully...

SPEED: speed speed speed.... lighting fast... sometimes I think its faster than my PC notebook

In conclusion... this is my third pocket PC and it has convinced me once and for all HP iPaqs are the best PDA's out there. I highly recomend this product. You will be then envy of every pocket PC holder.

There is tons of built-in memory, as well as SD and CF slots to accomadate another 3 GB of storage. This is more than enough room for all your videos, music, photos, games, and PIM. Pocket Informant is included, to manage your Notes, Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts. It integrates with Outlook for your Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, and Inbox. ActiveSync 3.8 works very quickly, and you'll have no problem taking both your office, and your personal life with you on the go. Microsoft Office is included, so you have both Word and Excel. You can read, edit, write, and print documents and spreadsheets. These can be transferred to and from your computer. Windows Media Player 9.0 is included, allowing you to listen to .wma files, or watch .wmv files. A free e-book reader can be found to allow you to read books on the device, and if you subscribe to Audible.com, you can listen to books. There are literally hundreds of games that you can find for the device that are mind blowingly realistic graphics-wise. Some are free, some cost a small fee to download. HP Image Zone lets you make slideshows of your favorite photo albums. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also integrated in the device. This means you have two options of accessing the internet at any given time. Wi-Fi means that you can get a high speed internet connection near a Wi-Fi hotspot such as a coffeehouse, hotel, airport, office, home network, etc. If you're not near a Wi-Fi area, you can connect at dial-up speed using a Bluetooth modem. I'm a gadget lover, and the hx4705 is one sweet gadget! Web surfing at my local Panera bread, or checking a quick email (via home wireless network) before going to bed has NEVER been so easy. I personally feel this is the perfect bridge between a desktop PC and a laptop. I debated buying a laptop for over a year, but I didn't want to shell out $1500-$2000 for something I would not use as often as I can use my hx4705. And I got mine through an employee discount from HP for $585. Enroute to work, I can read PDF's, read an ebook, create simple Word docs (redundant, since all my Word docs are "simple"), play a game in VIBRANT color, or listen to MP3's. This is mostly what I will use this for, so it suits me fine. BUT, it's nice to know I am capabale of doing other things (GPS, camera, BlueTooth, etc) if/when the need arises down the road. I LOVE THIS THING!!

I would like to comment on some of the negative commentary I have read here in Amazon and in several online reviews.

REBOOTS Yes, they happen, but I've have yet to have to reboot where I lost data. I have yet to own a PDA which never needs a reboot.

WEIGHT Are you kidding me? Saying this device is heavy, is like saying the screen is TOO colorful! First off, it's a PDA, so if you can lift and hold a TV remote control comfortably, this PDA will NEVER cause you any hand/wrist injuries. Second, the added weight only means this thing is NOT constructed of CHEAP PLASTIC (i.e. Visor). I'll take a few more ounces for better quality construction any day.

TOUCHPAD Not the greatest idea, but if you practice enough and you like the idea, it works fine. I like the stylus, personally, and usually use it. I may get a thumb keyboard for banging out quick docs, as well.

PRICE In my case, the hx4705 is MUCH cheaper than a laptop, though it is the priciest NON-PHONE pda. But you get bang for your buck with embedded 802.11b, Bluetooth, 4" VGA screen, etc. Personally, I like keeping my phone and PDA separate, and I don't like gadgets that try to do too much, i.e. Phone-PDA-Camera.

If you are on the fence, go to a CompUSA and check it out for yourself. I did and fell in love with it. No regrets at all.

I have to say that the reviews I have read on other websites don't do this player justice. TThis player turned out to be a really good mp3 player. The touchscreen is very response. The interface is easy to use. The music library is well organized into folders like they should be and easy to navigate. One thing I was especially impressed with was the 5 band equalizer which is very effective in tweaking the sound when listening to music. Picture quality was good. I didn't mess with any videos but the demos already on it looked OK. All in All I was very pleased considering the small price I paid for two good quality mp3 players. Now I know that there are bad apples in every bunch but if you get a good one I think you'll be pleased.

I am enjoying my eclipse! At first I got it to make videos but I put some MP3s on it and love the heck out of it. I have 100 songs on it and it does everything it should. My touch screen is perfectly responsive. For the price it can't be beat. I wouldn't be able to buy a camera, a video camera or an MP3 player for the price and this one has all three.

It isn't a Fire or a Galaxy but for the price you can't go wrong with this nice touch screen mp3/mp4 player. We use it for videos and it works great. Small enough to take anywhere and clear video for the screen size. You must use the wmv format, but that works well. I'd recommend for anyone wanting portable music or videos.

This has got to be one of the worst mp3 players I've ever owned. The touch screen is terrible and doesn't respond 90% of the time even if you use the stylus that comes with it. Plus it tends to freeze for long periods of time especially after you take it off usb. This thing is basically just a headache. I may just have a defective one but so far it just hasn't been worth buying in any way, shape or form. Eclipse does make some good players. If you're looking for something good at a good price, I suggest going with a different model than this one.

Got this for my little girl and she just went nuts.

Her first touch screen anything.

The touch screen needs to be pressed a little hard but for the price it is great.

Video is a little hard to see.

The camera is decent.

A good amount of memory and the sd slot works well for transferring photos to computer.
