  • Adjustable sliding side arms.
  • 360" Swivel tip allows landscape or portrait viewing
  • Install on AC vent via swival vent clip.

I have the motorola droid x and this holds the phone perfectly in place at the perfect angle. The swivel feature makes it easy to adjust and with no instructions takes 5 seconds to install. A great product for such a low price.

It looks good in shape and durable. However, as I received it, I can see that the shape is not that proportional. The shape is square and the upper part of the square near the zipper looks wider.

Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner

Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner
  • Highly portable USB-connected color scanner ideal for remote projects
  • Can convert documents to PDF, Word, Email, Excel, and more
  • Included Cardiris software scans business cards into Outlook contacts; Roxio software lets you scan old photos
  • Recognizes 124 languages, including several Asian and Middle Eastern
  • Measures 1.9-by-9.7-by-1.3 inches (HxWxD); compatible with Macintosh and Windows

Nota bene: I am a Mac user, and this review is only about the products interaction with Mac OS 10.5.

The IRIScan express 2 beats the DSmobile 600 hands down in terms of Mac compatibility, but that was still not enough to encourage me to keep the product. Despite the great OCR functionality of Readiris Pro 11 and the promise of convenience of Cardiris (which I did not get a chance to use), the software interface and workflow has a "we just managed to get this out the door" feeling to it. The interface is not at all Mac-like, and the scanner does not, on the Mac, provide a TWAIN or Image Capture driver. That lack forces you to use the provided clunky applications to make any scan.

Despite Readiris's outstanding OCR performance, the PDF output is less than optimal. The Windows software included with the DSmobile 600 (the only portable, sheet-fed competitor that claims Mac functionality [and doesn't deliver]) produces perfect facsimiles of scanned pages and adds OCR text to the PDF that allows you to search and index it without losing the character of the original document, just like Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature for those of you who haven't experienced PDFs like this. Readiris Pro does not have this feature. Its PDFs are what you would get if you took the text document output and printed to PDF: disappointing and not at all useful for archival purposes, my motivation for purchase.

Also, the scanner is EXTREMELY slow, and all-caps are deserved in this case. The scanner takes more than 60 seconds per page. This is impossible to use if you are looking at a stack of documents you need to digitally archive. Enough said. If you are looking to do paperless office on the Mac platform, you need to use either a sheet-fed all-in-one machine from Canon or HP or, even better, get the Fuji ScanSnap, which at $600+ is insanely priced but works like a charm... so I've heard.

FYI this is the first Amazon product I review. I review this product given I cannot remember ever having to deal with such a useless product. If I could give it zero stars I would have. I looked at this product (the IRIScan express) and the Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner. I first purchased the IRIScan Express given it appears to have a more robust software bundle while having similar hardware to the DSmobile scanner. What a big mistake! I own a Windows XP computer and the software installation was extremely difficult (and I am a fairly technical guy). After 3 attempts, I finally got the software to properly install. My next issue was the quality and speed of the scanner. The highest quality setting does not produce a very high quality image and it is sloooooooooow. Also, there is no option to scan multiple pages into PDF or any other type of multipage format (PDF does not appear to be supported). This was a big issue for me as I scan multipage documents. Finally, connecting the scanner after disconnecting it was also a challenge (I had to reboot my computer to get the scanner recognized). Eventually I got frustrated from dealing with all these issues and returned the product. I got the Pentax scanner and it simply works!!!!! The Pentax works like a charm quality is great and the scanner is EXTREMELY easy to setup and use. Do not waste your time and money on this IRIScan express piece of junk! The reason the Pentax has so many positive reviews is because it works!!

Greatly disappointed. The software provided did not function with Vista. Would not scan. After several reinstallations, removal caused a system crash. Support is extremely weak. No guidance on website, superficial fixes to problems, very little documentation. After several days waiting for response to my email asking for help, I received direction to contact them by phone 9-5, M-F EST, as if some of us don't have to work for a living. Never received an answer to my second email. Product has been returned.

After reading the nasty review below I was hesistant, but then I saw all the references to another product and just figured it was a competitor. I have the iris biz card scanner and it works like they said it would, so I have had good luck with their products. I saw this portable scanner being demo'd at macworld and decided to buy at Amazon because they had the best price. It works like I expected. Its small, easy to travel with, doesnt seem slow to me when scanning and is very accurate which is most important to me. Has a bunch of software included but I prob won't use some of them, just scanning documents and business cards while traveling are my needs and it does it great. I would recommend.

In my continuing road-warrior saga (business, not post-apacolyptic) I often search for that crucial item which makes new things possible and saves me time. While I can really dig a scanner that fits into my carry-on bag, the software integration has to be tight. The drivers have to install, the applications have to work as advertised on the box. And when I pay top dollar, I expect full versions of software ... not trial-ware or SE editions. You see where I am going here?

This thing has the potential to be kick-a$$ but it only achieves frustration. I have used this with both a MacBook Pro, a Toshiba Satellite with XP, and a Dell with VISTA; none of them are happy with the software installation. Once I solved the issues there, I began to notice the real limitations of the individual applications. The Mac versions and the Windows versions are not equivalent, and do not work the same way or perform equally. The business card scanning software is the best of the included applications, and its implementation with Mac and also with MS Office is poor... no direct imports, as the box seemed to say. Very laborious. In the end, I am a faster typist than the machine can scan in cards... so what is the point then? The sheet fed scanning is not up to the standard of my ancient (1997) CANON portable scanner, which makes no sense at all. Even my old HP SCANJET 4670, bought only for the coolness of the upright look-thru case (remember the ads?) performs as well as the IRIS, and comes with software which worked pretty well...

I know this company can make it work, and I desperately wanted this to be good. I will wait for their real product... when it comes along, and ignore the write-ups in Mac-Life next time.

rooCASE Ultra Slim (Black) Leather Case Cover Cover with Stand for Sony S1 Android Tablet Wi-Fi

rooCASE Ultra Slim Leather Case Cover Cover with Stand for Sony S1 Android Tablet Wi-FiThis is an awesome case being that there are very few to choose from for this Sony Tablet S. It is a glove-like fit, but if you use the IR emitter to control TVs and other home entertainment devices, it will not work. The case is well designed, but forgot to incorporate Sony's IR sensor so that FULL functionality could be rendered. I simply just took some scissors and opened up the top of the case making room for the sensor and now it works. I had to burn the stitching to lock it in place and keep it from coming undone, but other than that it is an awesome case. It also functions as a landscape stand and does not feel flimsy. Overall a great product and I would recommend it to all Sony Tablet S owners, if you do not really use the remote control app included with the device.

Just bought the case after hearing about it through blogs. The competition was all sold out and I wanted a case for protection.

It fits like a glove. The only reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 is that the infrared is blocked. There is a hole on top, but it is not designed right. The IR signal is not sent out so you must take the tab out of the sleeve to control your devices. I will probably try and stretch the hole with a scissors to see if this will help.

Roocase, a nice fit, but slightly flawed design. Not sure if the competition will allow the IR signal out.

This is a well-made basic cover that provides great protection against dings and scratches because it is made of quality leather but is only of limited use in protecting against drops and other such shock damages. Many cases add significantly to the thickness and heft of a device but not this one and that I much appreciate. One thing that I would like to see is some way to secure the cover closed.

Belkin BV112050-06 6-Feet Advanced 12 Outlet Surge Protector Cord

Belkin BV112050-06 6-Feet Advanced 12 Outlet Surge Protector Cord
  • 2 USB Charging Ports
  • 6-Feet Cord
  • 12 surge protected outlets
  • 3,000 Joules

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM) I've used cheap surge protectors only for the fact that I don't have enough outlets either in my living room or office. It's scary to think of blowing out your entire home theater system with a lightning strike or your computer home base. It made sense to invest in a good one. Now I am a bit impressed with this "Surge Protector", of all things.

Basically it is one strong unit that has twelve (12) outlets. Unlike the other Belkin Pivot-Plug Surge Protector that I really like, these plugs that are not flexible or rotating. All the twelve outlets are upright with three to the left, three to the right and six down the middle.

I used this for my computer system. I can plug in most of my plugs (computer, light fixture, sound speakers, phone system, iHome clock, iPhone recharger/speakers, Printer and a smaller light fixture. It was easy, as so many of the fixtures had proprietary plugs. You know; those plugs that have to be square or rectangular, extra thick or just large enough that they overlap onto another plug rendering it useless. But Belkin has placed these plugs just far enough apart from each other that all my weird sized plugs fit easily. The power switch is recessed and there is a small "Protected Not Grounded" red/green led light for assurance showing active and properly grounded indications, as well.

The six (6) foot cord is long enough as my electrical socket is very close, but having an extra two feet would have been nice for future use. The plug only requires an inch of space but needs to be on the bottom of your wall socket. A great feature that I haven't seen in many other units is the two USB charging ports in the unit itself! These are best for my iPhones, iPad or if you have an MP3 player to charge. This is great as, my computer only has so many USB ports and although these are not close (this Belkin unit is on the floor). Still, without one of those larger 7-port USB chargers, these are a nice addition.

It says that it has 3,996 joules of Surge Protection, which is a good standard the higher the joules, the better the protection. Still, I'm confident it will protect my electronics. It also has what is called, "Advanced Power Filtration" (up to 75 dB noise reduction). This smooths your electromagnetic workings keeping your computer system/devices running at optimal performance this is something I never knew could be a problem. I'm glad I dodged an electrical overload so far. Damage from voltage fluctuations, surges, and spikes would be a nightmare. For this price, considering the potential damage, it is a no-brainier. Also, to really keep me happy, there is a $250,000 Connected Equipment Limited Lifetime Warranty. This is more than a bargain it's an insurance program.

Buy Belkin BV112050-06 6-Feet Advanced 12 Outlet Surge Protector Cord Now

BRIEF EVALUATION

Belkin's surge protector allows for up to 12 AC devices, including 6 'wide' DC adapters to be plugged in. It also has 2 USB charging ports. It will protect whatever is plugged in against power surges for as long as it is properly plugged and grounded itself. It does NOT protect or support coax, Ethernet or phone line connections Belkin and other vendors offer models with such features.

My personal experience does validate the claims the manufacturer makes for the features that I am using and I can verify at this time. Currently, I have 10 devices plugged into the surge protector, including 5 DC adapters and 5 2/3-prong plugs. The 2 remaining slots are unobstructed and could be used if needed.

So far, I am happy and based on its meeting my real needs, good design, features and low price I recommend it as (in my view) one of the best it its class.

MORE DETAILS

The following are noteworthy, in my view.

Positives:

👎 TRUE 12-outlet capacity. Unlike the traditional surge-protected power strips where one beefy AC adapter would cover 2 slots, Belkin's device truly accommodates 6 AC adapters and allows for 6 more plugs to fit in.

👎 'Protected' green light (must be on) provides assurance that the surge protector is operational. When the green light stays off it usually means that the surge protector 'expired' while protecting your device from a power surge and it must be replaced ASAP.

👎 'Not grounded' red light (must be off) will warn you when there's something wrong. Belkin's warranty won't apply if the light was on when your devices got fried. I don't know if for a fact but I assume they have a way of telling if that was the case.

👎 6 ft. long chord, quite adequate.

👎 Integrated clip for cable management that can be lowered into the body if not in use. I find it useful.

👎 Thin (one inch) and flat shape. Stands well on a table or on the floor.

Negatives:

Other than encouraging the unrealistic expectation that Belkin would pay you up to a gazillion dollars on connected equipment warranty coverage, I can't think of anything bad.

WARRANTY

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a worthless warranty and 10 is one that's unbelievably generous, Belkin's should be somewhere around 2 or 3 95% of all warranties on devices this cheap are likely to be a 1.

They do promise to replace the item if it sacrifices itself while protecting your devices for as long as you can prove that you didn't do anything stupid, you have a purchase receipt and you ship the damaged item to Belkin at your own expense. It's not clear if they will charge you for shipping you back a new item. This may or may not be something worth pursuing. My impression is that you are not going to save a lot of money by getting a 'free' replacement from Belkin and you are likely to waste a lot of time in the process. I'd probably buy myself a new one if the one I have now stopped working but it's good to know that they do have a 'lifetime' warranty. By 'lifetime' they mean the natural life of the product but 'natural life' is not precisely defined.

As far as being reimbursed for damage to devices that this surge protector was expected to protect, my impression is that you are not likely to get much if anything unless you can afford a lawyer and you are willing to sue. You have to meet a long series of requirements that are expressed in several paragraphs of techno-legalese.

RATING

I will have to repeat myself stating that, in my view, this is one of the best in its class and the price is right. My expectations were met as far as design, cord length and warranty (that expectation was low). My expectations were exceeded when it comes to the plugs layout with ample room for 6 wide adapters and the adding of 2 USB charging ports.

Maybe I should have removed one star from the over hyped connected equipment warranty statement but... as sad as it is, everybody does it and Belkin's warranty is better than most so, I am awarding 5 stars on an item that inexpensively addresses real needs I have with protecting the many devices clustered in a corner of my basement.

It was time to update an old surge protector I'd bought with a PC in 2006, and this sleek white protector filled the bill. My old unit still had in/output for phone cords! This surge protector is solidly constructed, white with a grey edge, and mounting slots on the back. The cord and unit look quite nice in a white room. The liability is $250,000, a huge step up from the old version.

I plugged this in to the wall, untangled a glob of cords, and plugged them in to the new surge protector; I was also delighted to find two USB outlets, each 2.1 amps. My iPad got one, the iPhone took the second. There is plenty of room for power blocks, a recessed on/off switch, and lights that indicate "power" and "grounded." I'm glad to see the cords so attractively managed, but even more pleased to know that my equipment is properly protected.

Want Belkin BV112050-06 6-Feet Advanced 12 Outlet Surge Protector Cord Discount?

In a home with multiple Blu-Ray players, receivers, TV's, iPhones and a countless amount of other gizmos and gadget this well designed powerstrip comes in very handy. It is very well constructed with a flat design and 'handle' that result in much easier maneuvering underneath shelves, beds, and other obstructions. We replaced a cheaper, smaller strip and are using this instead, and love it so far. The 2 USB charging ports are also pluses, because it frees up one of the plus where one of our iphones would otherwise be plugged in. Unlike more narrow power strips which often tip over when all of the plugs are used, this lays flat to the ground, with a very wide base-much easier to slide under things and doesn't tip over, which can be annoying when adding/moving other strips. High quality item and definitely recommended!

Garmin iQue M5 Integrated Pocket PC and GPS

Garmin iQue M5 Integrated Pocket PC and GPS
  • Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition with integrated GPS and Que navigation applications
  • Powered by a 416 MHz Intel PXA 272 microprocessor; includes 64 MB RAM, 64 MB ROM, and data back-up protection
  • Embedded Bluetooth transceiver lets you network with computer systems and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, PDAs, printers, etc.
  • Check e-mail and view documents--then sync seamlessly with your laptop
  • Includes MapSource City Select North America data CD-ROM with full coverage/full unlock

I have had about a week to use the M5. My first impression is WOW. This IS my first GPS and also my first PDA, so take my review for what it's worth. I would love to give this product 5 stars, but I will get right to the point of why I can't do it.

CONS :

No 802.11b/g Not a huge deal if you don't mind plugging a bluetooth USB adapter in your PC, but honestly it is a little annoying that I can't connect right up to my 802.11g network out of the box. There are SD/MMC 802.11b cards available that are a option, but I have not ordered one yet.

GPS non-responsive (see *Edit* at bottom of this review) As one other reviewer also noted, I also had a GPS problem where it acted like it was looking for the satellites, but couldn't see any of them. This was outside, and not indoors. I pushed the reset button, and GPS fired up just fine. As with the other reviewer, I also haven't had this problem reoccur after about a week of using it. The initial problem was about an hour after I took it out of the box. Since then I have used it a good 20+ times without any problems. I will report back if this problem comes back!

The leather flip case(?) It is a little lame, and offers no protection except for maybe screen...and even that's a stretch.

PROS -

Wow, I opened the box, and it was very complete. A nice windshield suction mount, cig adapter with speaker and the other 'standard' PDA items (cradle, USB cable, travel A/C adapter, etc).

It's a nice size, not to bulky. The battery seems to perform as expected. I don't have any exact #'s, but from what I could tell it was at least 4 hours with some GPS usage.

One thing I would like to comment on is the 'cost'. A lot of reviews elsewhere talked about how expensive this device is. Yes, it's not cheap, but try buying a comparable PDA and a GPS add-on. You'll be close to, if not higher than what you would pay for this fully integrated PDA/GPS.

I have taken one trip (74 miles each way). It did a pretty good job getting me to the destination. I did notice that it was a little slow to recalculate the route if you miss a turn (5-10 seconds on average). Not a huge deal, but could be a problem in inner-city driving. It also did a random "Make U-Turn" in the intersection I was turning at. I believe the intersection came up later than the GPS/mapping software was expecting. The estimated time of arrival is nice, and right on target!

GPS performance : The GPS picks up the satellites fine in my car. My house (2 story) it's fine on the second floor, but the first floor it does not pick up the satellites unless I move over to a window.

Storage I don't own a memory card yet, but even with the built-in memory I was able to get most of middle-TN and North Atlanta. I hear a 2GB memory card will hold all of the US, and 1GB will hold over half the US. I would say that is about right.

That's about all I can think of at this time. I will report back in a few weeks with an update. At this point I am very pleased.

Edit 4/28/05 I did have one additional lockup of the unit that required a 'reset', so I went to the Garmin website and found out that there was a new firmware revision. I loaded the firmware and so far the unit seems to be performing perfectly. So, for those who are having GPS lockup problems, download the firmware revision. Garmin states that the firmware fixes several lockup issues.

Overall, I would give this device a 3.5 stars.

Pros

1. Display is larger than most handheld GPS, which is nice.

2. You can find most of your point of interests, though it does not contain the nursery that I go to often.

3. Speaker on included car adapter works well and the voice is clear.

4. GPS is one of those useful gadgets, adding PDA makes it even better.

5. Good battery life.

6. Lots of other goodies like playing mp3 and bluetooth.

Cons

1. Lost GPS capability once and had to do a reset.

2. It gets you there but routing can be way off. With all avoidances unchecked and fastest time chosen, it consistently gave me MUCH longer routes and time. A trip that should only include going on ONE freeway, M5 routes a total of THREE freeways, making a 17 mile trip into 24 miles!

3. Device have been inexplicably locked up; unable to use GPS from time to time except for this last time. Device was reset. Received "out of memory" error when tried to open Garmin apps after reset. Downloaded "fix" v2.50; fix app does not run. GPS right now USELESS until Garmin comes up with another "fix".

4. Business addresses can be totally incorrect, for example, listings a Church's Fried Chicken and Papa John's pizza were about two miles off and the streets and numbers don't even come close!

5. Totally not user friendly.

6. Screen can be insensitive, requiring multiple taps.

7. Expensive.

8. Windshield mount is almost a joke; should have included friction mount instead. Most vehicles have fairly slanted windshields, which would be a hassle mounting the M5 and also would potentially block your view of the road. Besides, it's illegal to mount stuffs on your windshield in CA.

9. Acquiring satellites can be slow; you can be a few miles from home before getting a signal.

10. Cover flap attachment is poorly design which partially block the adapter connection. Snapping in the device may cause a mild shock, which may reset your device.

As a longtime palm user I was a little reluctant to move into the Windows Mobile world, but my old dependable M130 was dying, so I started looking for a new PDA. I travel a ton for business and was fascinated by the GPS in the M5. I was also interested in the WiFi capabilites (with a WiFi Card, I bought a Spectec....it's great, and small enough you won't break it off) of Windows version of the PDA....I read all the reviews and almost didn't buy it, but if you look at the reviews ... the later ones are much better, obviously Garmin has been working on the bugs.

Pros:

The GPS is top notch, accurate to about 10ft in the car, when mounted on the windshield. The mount that comes with the unit is fine, you don;t need another one. Just make sure the windows is CLEAN....If not it will fall off. Windex it first. You'll also want to move it around some until you find a spot where you can easily get it in and out of the cradle. It will take a few trys until you find the perfect spot in the car.

The Windows mobile has abilities my old palm would only dream of, I sync it with lotus notes via intellisync and it works great.

It's a tough bugger, I had it a month and dropped it in a parking lot, put a nice gouge in it and it's still going.

Battery lasts a long time with steady use, Wifi in the airport, etc.....doesn't do so well with the GPS though, only about 40 minutes.

The ETA display is right on, handy when you are calling your next appointment to confirm. If it says you'll be there at 2pm....short of a major traffic jam, you pull in at 2pm.

****

Cons

The mapping sofware that came with mine is about 2 years out of date. I can tell by a few road projects that have been done locally and are not yet in the mapsource software. Garmin does allow you a free update, which I ordered. I would think that will help. The points of interest are about the same. Even after the free update, from what I can tell the software update only costs about $50

The routing is a bit odd, when you select fastest or shortest routing it will do exactly that, even if it makes no sense. For example, on a local road near my house there is a highway that was expanded and moved, it will actually take you off the new road, down the old road and back to the new road because it cuts off a corner. playing with the settings helps, but you will still see it do some odd things. Honestly It always gets me there, just sometimes not the simplest way.

****

Bottom line is this work just about as well as any in car I've used, and is a solid PDA as well.

With a 1GB card I added the entire Northeast, FL, TX and AZ. It took about 450MB of the card.

Want Garmin iQue M5 Integrated Pocket PC and GPS Discount?

I have just used the product for 14 days. I can not describe how happy I am with the performance of this tiny little gadget. First of all, for all those people complaining about bluetooth or wi-fi connectivity, I think this pocket PC is more focused on being a GPS/Navigation system and all the additional stuff should be considered a bonus. Hands down, pricewise this is one of the top navigational systems out there. My brother bought the Microsoft Streets and Trips USB add-on which he attaches to his laptop, and I bought this Garmin unit. Trust me, this GPS is 10 times better, its all in one package, comes with EVERYTHING you would need to get set and get going.

Highlights:

-Points of interests: finds atms, movie theatres, restaurants (really really handy when you're out with family and need to drive to another restaurant)

-Integrated: comes with everything you need to be mobile; dashboard kit, windshield mount, desktop charger, etc

-great software: the MapSource is excellent.

-great design, good price compared to its GPS competition.

-voice prompts work great when you are driving and its a loud clear speaker voice telling you exactly where to turn. If you miss a turn, it automatically recalculates and tell you where to turn next. basically, its really really hard to get lost if you have this thing. This product will save you money and time if you are driving in inner-cities and have a hard time with directions (so true for me driving around NYC metro area especially long island)

If we were to compare it within the GPS/Navigation category, this product takes the hat, no doubt about it. Compared to the $700 magellan unit, this is slicker, easier to set up AND did i forget to mention its a full fledged pocket PC with MS Windows Mobile Edition OS.

Cons:

only comes with 64 mb of storage. Which isn't bad, and it will load up maps of almost an entire state. I live in Queens, and I'm able to load up NYC and half of long island for about 20 megs. So i guess its not really a con.

If you need an excellent GPS system, this is it. Just think of the pocket PC functions as a free additional bonus.

i have never written a review in my life but after using this product, I was so satisfied that I told all my friends to get it instead of getting a $2k navigational system installed and now i'm writing a review to tell others what they MUST try for themselves.

I had an IQUE 3600 for more than a year and that was great for the GPS use. Rarely used it for the Palm. The M5 is almost identical GPS-wise and the city map got upgraded to V7. Easily found Starbucks on Sun morning in a unfamiliar town. PocketPC is more familiar than Palm because of the WinXP similiar interface. There are a lots of games and other productivity software available for the PocketPC! The IQUE 3600 had some problems when attaching to the cradle mount at times ... the M5 doesn't because of the newer design. Comes with a suction mount for the auto so don't buy it separately. The supplied auto mount also can be mated with a 3rd party adapter to be powered by 110vac instead of 12vdc like in your hotel room when traveling (actually, I used a GameBoy advance AC Adapter and & car kit for $10 and that works fine). Used my 1GB SD card from the IQUE 3600 and it works like a charm. 700MB used for the 1/4 NE part of the US from the Mississipi to Atlantic, from Canada to Tenn. A 2GB card would be more than enough for the 1/2 Eastern US and with loads of room left over for other data.

Techno Earth® Ps410 600dpi Colour & Mono Handyscan Handheld Scanner

Techno Earth® Ps410 600dpi Colour & Mono Handyscan Handheld Scanner
  • Image Sensor : A4 Color Photoelectic Sensor
  • Scan Resolution : 600dpi / 300dpi
  • Storage Format : JPEG
  • Storage Medium : MicroSD ( Not included)
  • Transmission Mode : USB 2.0

Got this for scanning genealogy records. It appears to be the same scanner as the VuPoint but at a better price. Came with a carrying pouch, USB cable and a CD that included a PDF manual and some software for Optical Character Recognition (Windows). I thought it might be difficult to get a good scan with a hand-held device but I was pleasantly surprised. The scanner seems to be pretty forgiving. I was getting good scans from the very first try. Scanning from a book can take three hands in order to get the scanner in close to the binding. I got good scans in color and greyscale.

I highly recommend this scanner to anyone needing to scan from library books or old paper documents.

Don't forget to buy a microSD card to go with this as it won't work without one. Even a 1GB card would give you space for a lot of scans.

Buy Techno Earth® Ps410 600dpi Colour & Mono Handyscan Handheld Scanner Now

Works very well after a bit of practice. The reality is, if you have a steady hand this scanner is going to work out for you. If your hands shake, don't bother with this scanner. Your images will come out distorted and spliced. You'll be better of with a flatbed scanner. If you plan to do a lot of scanning, you'll need a lot of batteries, this thing will eat them up. You'll have to replace them after about every 150 scans. It would have been nice if you could operate this thing while it's plugged into a USB port.

I bought this to take to the library to scan pages from genealogy reference books while working on my family tree.

It's small and compact and very light weight. It'll be perfect for carrying in my briefcase with my laptop.

Accessing the files once they're scanned is as easy as plugging in the USB cable, opening Windows Explorer, and clicking on a couple of folders.

It's going to take some time to get the hang of what the perfect speed is, but I don't think that's going to be that hard.

I can't wait to get to the library and start using this!

Want Techno Earth® Ps410 600dpi Colour & Mono Handyscan Handheld Scanner Discount?

I bought this scanner for the purpose of scanning pages out of law books at the library. After about two minutes' practice, it was a cinch. In fifteen minutes I was able to scan 30 pages' research, and later downloaded it all to my laptop as .PDF files. The resolution is great, and the scan quality was good enough to use in powerpoint presentations after cropping and magnifying with Microsoft Picture Manager. You can't get scans out of books with a page-fed portable, and a desktop model is too big to carry. Light years better than waiting for the library photocopier.

I bought this item in the begining of this semester, and i am very glad that I bought this scanner. It is so easy to use, compatible with mac and pc, I scanned my friends notes, I scanned pages from a book that we are not allowed to take out of the library. It was a ver good purchase. Price is definitely reasonable.

Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer Lock

Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer Lock
  • Ultra-strength carbon tempered steel cable core on 6-ft, 4.5 mm thick cable with external steel braided sheath
  • Innovative disc-lock engineering for triple maximum security
  • Patented T-bar locking mechanism provides superior lock strength and theft protection
  • Easy to install and use to protect high security computer devices
  • Fits in the standard Kensington security slot found in 99% of notebooks, CPUs, flat panel monitors, projectors, printers, docking stations

A very robust lock. It fits well on my thin MacBook Pro, and does not crowd out the adjacent USB port for most USB devices (an exception is my original iPod Shuffle, which is too wide for most adjacent ports). The straight key fits better on my key ring than a tubular key, appears secure enough, and rips open a mean parcel. The one drawback for me is that the heavy cable is parallel to the body of the lock. This precludes the use of a mouse alongside the lock side of my laptop.

Buy Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer Lock Now

As others have said this is a great cable lock. I'll try not to repeat what has already been said.

SECURITY:

This has "flat" keys but they are not simple keys; their groove pattern is sort of three-dimensional. I don't think you're going to get them duplicated at your local hardware store. Register them at the Kensington web site so you can get them replaced if you lose them.

There are many stories and videos on the web showing how to easily defeat the cylindrical locks that are used on less expensive cable locks but none of that stuff will work here!

CONVENIENCE:

The cable comes with a clip attached to it that keeps the cable coiled neatly when not in use. It is well made and works great. See one of my uploaded images.

Since the clip is permanently attached to the cable this remains a "one piece" solution with no little parts to get lost or separated from the cable lock. ("one piece" except for the keys, of course)

HOWTO:

When I first tried to use this lock it took me a minute and some minor frustration to figure it out so I have uploaded an image and will give a little explanation here. I do notice that a fair number of other reviews also mention some confusion and frustration over the workings of the lock mechanism. I hope the following helps ...

* Always hold the cylinder marked with the "K" lock symbol with one hand while turning the key with the other (see uploaded image). Because the cable attachment provides a more prominent hand-hold it is tempting to hold on to it while turning the key but the cable attachment spins freely and has no relation to the locking mechanism so holding it will not accomplish anything except by chance, leading to confusion. This may be the most important point.

* The uploaded image shows the locking mechanism in the locked position. The key is turned fully counterclockwise. This is the only position in which the key can be inserted or removed. The lock's T-bar will NOT go into nor come out of the slot on the device being protected when in this position.

* To insert the lock's T-bar into the slot you need to first turn the key as far as you can (180 degrees) clockwise. That puts the lock on the unlocked position and allows the T-bar to be inserted into the slot. In the unlocked position the T-bar lines up with the pair of pins forming an overall flat shape that will fit into the slot.

* Once the lock's T-bar is in the slot turn the key as far as you can (180 degrees) counterclockwise. This puts the lock back into the locked position and allows you to remove the key. Be sure the T-bar is fully inserted into the slot before turning the key. If it is not, this is where you might damage the surface or any outer plastic layer of your laptop.

* Take note of the orientation of the key with respect to the T-bar and the T-bar with respect to the pins when it is in both the locked and the unlocked positions. This will help you line things up when inserting the T-bar into the slot. This may be the second most important point.

I'm sure you could figure that out all by yourself but this will give you something to think about and the pictures something to look at while you wait for yours to be delivered!

The Kensington Microsaver DS lock is really good. Right out of the box you can tell its very strong and i feel confident this lock could stop all but the most determined thief from walking away with my laptop. (Given a good amount of time and the right tools any lock can be broken) Notebook locks are, in effect, a visual deterrent. You're average pick up and go with your laptop thief wont bother with trying at it, they'll just move onto something easier. The lock design is really good, much better then the classic design that has videos all over the internet showing how it can be picked with such high-end objects as a piece of cardboard from a toilet roll or a hollowed out ball point pen. The rubber surface where the lock comes in contact with the notebook is definitely a plus, won't be doing any damage to your notebook. The lock itself again, feels and is strong. Definately something you want to look into, I spent a lot of time comparing this to the regular Microsaver one as well. The DS is worth that extra $8 I paid for!

Want Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer Lock Discount?

I looked at other locks in stores and did some online research and everything pointed to the MicroSaver DS with keys. While nothing will stop a determined thief I believe this is the best security available. It's well thought out, easy to use, and simply looks tough. It slips into a laptop bag easily yet it's long enough that you'll always be able to find something to attach it to. I use it while travelling and even at home.

I look at it this way. Once you realize that there is a device like this available you have to buy it and use it. Otherwise, you have no one to blame but yourself if your laptop is stolen.

I just received this today and had it locking down my HP Pavillion dv9000 in about three minutes. Seems to fit the locking slot just fine and does the trick of keeping it locked down so it can't walk away from my desk. Cable is thick and coated, so it won't scratch. One caveat, this thing is NOT light nor does it roll up into a neat little package. By comparison, it's a bit lighter and compact than an old printer cable (before USB). It's the weight factor that knocks off a star.

Sling Media Slingbox Classic

Sling Media Slingbox Classic
  • SlingRemote lets you change channels, view recorded content, fast-forward and set up a season pass with virtually any A/V device
  • Powered by a digital signal processor; Leverages the latest WMV technologies
  • Easy to use and set up, with no new cables required, automatic device discovery,
  • Absolutely zero subscription fees
  • Easy to use and set up, with no new cables required, automatic device discovery

Well, I've only been using it for about 2 days now and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised and 99% satisfied! (1% is lost on the fact that only one computer can use it at a time.)

The quality is top-notch! I thought it might be pixelated, jerky, or buggy but it isn't. It flows and runs like a regular TV. It just feels like you're watching TV.

Let me also mention all of the features that it has:

* You can watch TV with a full screen and either have the remote on the screen, or not.

* You can hit a button and it will automatically dock to one side of the screen and re-adjust the size of your other windows. And then, you can even fine tune and adjust the size of that window.

* If you just want it to be on your screen and not be docked, you can do that and adjust that screen size as well.

* You can also create a list of favorite channel icons, so all you do is click onto your favorite channel's icon. If the icon doesn't exist you can create your own!

* It also works with channels like HBO On Demand and with TiVo as well (however, I don't have TiVo).

* If your workplace has a firewall, you can access your home computer using your home computer's IP Address.

This product is HIGHLY recommended!

Buy Sling Media Slingbox Classic Now

I was amazed. On my home network, streamed very high quality (though small picture, since the TV signal is actually less than 640x480), and when I went wireless, the quality dropped (as expected), but it kept up with audio, didn't break up. Really amazingly well designed wizard to configure.

Ground-breaking technology. This device allows me to watch my Chicago cable TV service while in Paris. It converts the TV signal into an internet transmission. The image is only about 4 x 3 inches in size on my higher density 1680 by 1050 notebook screen but looks very clean and highly viewable. Sound quality is excellent. Transfer rates ranges from 400 to 700 kbps.

Another feature of this product is that it can be used as an internet based remote control. I have one in my mother's senior home apartment. It enables me to view her apartment, view her electronics, and send remote control signals to her electronics whenever she gets stumped. I'm sure there are many other ways to apply this unique technology.

SlingMedia is an exceptional company. The initial release of this product brought rave reviews -uncommon for release 1.0. They did not rest. Since then, they have released new versions which further enhanced the SlingBox.

I'm impressed with the concept, the technology, the product, the execution, the installation, the enhancements, the updatability, the reliability, the quality of the support, the people from top to bottom. The staff members are very active on avsforum.com. Great attitudes.

While Tivo enabled me to watch TV when I wanted, this product allows me to watch TV where it was otherwise impossible.

This may be the best consumer electronic product of 2005.

Update 15 Nov 2005: Wow, it happened! Time Magazine named it one of the "Best Inventions 2005" in November 21st 2005 issue.

Update 9 Jan 2006: Won PCMag 2005 Technical Excellence Award\

I'm in no way affilated with SlingMedia. I'm just a SlingBox fan boy.

I want to follow up on my first post about the SlingBox. After my review I was contacted by Blake the CEO of Slingmedia asking me if he could have his support Manager give me a call to discuss my problems. After explaning my story to Larry Lane he asked me if I would give the box another chance. He told me that if I ran into more problems that the box can be sent back no questions asked. I decided that since the CEO of the company can reach out to me as a customer that Slingmedia was concerned how they treated their customers! (How many CEO's reach out to the average customer??).

Larry worked with me personally in setting up my new unit to make sure things went right. After the initial set up I still had a few viewing issues. Larry and his team worked with me on the issues only to find out these issues were due to my router. To make a long story short I replaced my linksys router with a Netgear 624A. My entire network seems to be working much better and the slingbox is GREAT!!!!

I cant say enough how wonderful Blake/Larry and their team was! Without the email from Blake I can honestly say that I would not have a slingbox today or in the future. The people running the company are terrific and have completely changed the way I look at their product! I strongly recommend the product to anyone! The technology is amazing! I cant wait to the summer to sit outside on my deck, get some sun and watch the NY Mets play some baseball!!

Thank you Blake and Larry!! You and your team are great!

My friend explained Slingbox to me, and at first I just didn't get it. Then one day it hit me: I could be in a hotel room, get on my laptop, control my Tivo or cable box via remote repeaters, and watch the streaming video sent from my house. That was when I realized that the way I watched TV was about to change again (since I got my Tivo) and I couldn't wait.

I got a Slingbox as quickly as I could and have absolutely loved it. With the help of the great Dell Inspiron 700m laptop, I've watched and controlled my home TV in the airport, hotels, coffee shops, in my bed, at work, and even had a friend's wife catch up on her O.C. in Singapore! I've docked the SlingPlayer viewer while working on my desktop at home. After watching from work a couple of times, my boss bought one and streams the news all day he's hooked.

The Slingbox looks great, is exceptionally easy to set up, and the software works very well. I'm really impressed with the picture and the dynamic streaming based on bandwidth. Make sure you've planned how you're going to add it to your networkI used the netgear Power over Ethernet bridge to connect to my network from the living room, and I'd recommend it if your TV is far from your network (easy setup, high bandwidth, and no extra radio waves going through your body).

As a Slingbox owner, I highly recommend this product, especially if you've been thinking about getting a TV tuner or Video card with tuner supportthis is a more flexible alternative, and SlingPlayer viewer software can be installed on multiple systems.

P.S. Desperate Housewives was only used for the purpose of alliteration. It is not an admission that I watch it. I did actually watch T.V., although not South Park, from Switzerland, and it worked flawlessly!

Hewlett Packard 200LX 2 MB Palmtop PC

Hewlett Packard 200LX 2 MB Palmtop PC
  • Rugged clamshell design protects handheld on the go
  • Includes Pocket Quicken and Lotus 123
  • Appointment book, notetaker, memo pad, and database capabilities
  • Compatible with PCMCIA 2.0 Type I and II memory cards
  • Laplink remote access with serial connection

I used the HP 200LX when I was going thru grad school. The 200LX was of great use to me in doing all of the various computational assignments and testing that was required. The device out of the box is setup to run HP palmtop OS which makes us of the under lying MS-DOS. However I found the device to be more useful / powerful by using it's built it MS-DOS 5.0 directly.

As a student I used the device primarily as a calculator and a text viewer and editor. It will run most any program that runs on an 8088 desktop computer running MS-Dos 5.0. Also "some" software that requires a 286 based machine will run on the device. I have used the following programs on it:

* Derive 4.11

* Matlab 3.5

* MathCad 2.5

* Lotus-123 ver 2.4

* XtreeGold

* Turbo C

* MS Fortran

* Wordperfect

* MS Word

I bought mine from Thaddeus Computing, they have refurbished and enhanced 200LX units for sale. They can be reached at the following website,I bought one that has been speeded up by them and is referred to as a DoubleSpeed enhancement. I have had my 200LX for about 11 years now and it still works just fine and it is still my calculator of choice. So if you are looking for a powerful calculator like device the HP 200LX is still a good choice.

It is too bad HP stopped making the 200LX. Keyboard handheld devices (running desktop software) are currently not being made and that is a sad thing.

Buy Hewlett Packard 200LX 2 MB Palmtop PC Now

So, these were discontinued about 15 years back and technology has moved on but in some areas has not improved.

Would I recommend a young person buy one and learn to use it as a general purpose machine, no.

Would I recommend it for specific applications that are not offered now or if modern GUIs annoy you, yes.

Every year or two I buy some new thing hoping to replace my HP200LX and after a couple weeks I'm back to carrying the HP and the new toy is the bin of handheld castoffs.

ADVANTAGES:

Battery life, 2+ weeks on a pair of AAs, try that with a new machine.

Size, if fits in a pocket easily.

Screen is readable outdoors.

Keyboard, by using small keys with some space around them it is much easier to type on than similar size keyboards, good tactile feedback, just what you would expect from the best calculator maker.

UI, the bundle of applications is well integrated and the key bindings are the same for all apps.

you don't have to figure out cut and paste, help keys, save, etc. for every new program.

Storage, uses standard PCMCIA cards or more usefully now, a PCMCIA adapter with a CF card (about 300mb max limit).

DOS, if you have an old program you need to run, here you go.

Calculator, every bit of HP calculator software is here. Base N, financial, engineering, currency, units, graphing, and the best solver I've ever used.

rs-232, for talking to older devices, I use mine to program radios and CNC mills.

Built in application suite, the calendar, quicken, a real spreadsheet,...

and fast, power on, hit a couple keys, get what you need. When I'm with friends and we are scheduling a meeting or doing a simple calculation I have the data entered and am putting it away while they are still rummaging for the correct app.

DISADVANTAGES:

They are 15 years old, very few new ones are to be had and the used ones ore very uneven in condition.

Slow, you can double clock them but even that is only about 8Mhz.

Screen, no backlight, if you drop it many times or crush it you tend to loose columns.

The biggest mechanical flaw is the right hinge will crack if you open it too far or eventually may crack from fatigue.

OS, DOS is ancient and very few new programs being written

Connectivity, no wifi support, no graphical browser

After a decade I still find handy little features and things this will do that I had never known and do things new devices can't do. I break it out and people are always wondering what that thing is and are surprised what it can do, impressed until they find it has no internet access.

I bought this thing when it was first released in 1999. Even for the time, the technology was substandard and the operating system was primitive. It's pretty much a useless gadget that doesn't even look cool by today's standards. Honestly, my first generation Palm Pilot was more useful than this thing.

I found it great because it does not add all of the extra phone/ internet features that are on the smart phones-not to mention not including the monthly access charges those smart phones come with.

I bought this product from Amazon thru a third party. I had no problems with the seller of this item infact he went over and beyond what was required as a seller to resolve a situation that i consider now a product problem and not a vendor problem. The main problem is that the backup battery ( the internal battery) fails after a certain amount of time. This has happened on 3 different x3s so it is not a fluke. When the backup battery fails and u remove the main battery to switch it out, all your data and items will be lost. If i were the next buyer i would not reccommend the x3 instead get the x51 which has no backup battery. The product will work as intended when the battery is left in and never removed or let expire. In closing Id like to thank Neil at NJ Closeout for the excellent service and recommendation about the item.

this is a great phone case. very durable. i use the car charger some, but not oftennever had any problems with it. the screen protector is really great too except that i didn't clean the screen well enough before putting it on so there were air bubbles that i couldn't really fix. that was my fault. usb data cable is also great to keep in my purse when i travel. great purchase overall.

the charger and cable did not work, the screen protector did not fit and was impossible to get the bubbles out from under it! Wishing I would have paid attention and bought something that worked. :( Not worth the shipping to return it.
