I say WOW in my heading because that's how I felt after quickly and easily installing the Zoom X7n DSL 2/2 Modem/Router. I'm not a techie so I can't and won't try to give you a tech talk review. It's plain and simple, this modem router is a terrific product:

Pros:

Easy to install Just pop in the enclosed CD. The software is simple to use, it is browser based (access using Explorer, Mozilla, etc.). The software is very simular to that used by Netgear. (Last year I tried to install a Linksys router and never could understand the software and gave up). The Zoom worked on my Centurylink DSL line with no addtional settings (you do need to enter your DSL account user ID and password.)

Excellent written instructions A Quick Start Guide and printed User Manual are included for installation and getting started, the have clear non-techie language, easy to follow.

High performanceI live outside a small rural town, Centurylink told me not to expect much more than 5 mb of speed, first speedtest on my laptop connected wirelessly to the Zoom showed a speed over 6 mb. My laptop and Kindle Fire had no problem finding and connecting to the router.

Excellent range the twin antennas provide strong signal throughout my house, the Router resides in my basement office.

Complete Kit The modem/router comes with a Quick Start Guide, User Manual, Ethernet Cable, Phone Cord, Phone/ADSL line splitter, Energy Saving power cube.

Size Unit is small 7" x 5" x 1.25", can be mounted vertically on a wall.

Price Great value for the Amazon price.

Set up was easy for both wired and wi-fi. Though I couldn't use the CD auto setup (Windows only), I was able to get everything going in about 15 minutes. The wi-fi signal is strong, and so far, reliable. Funny how I'm now using a modem by the same company who made my first dial-up modem some 15-20 years ago. Come to think of itit lasted until I replaced it with a faster modem.

It is easy to get the applications and sync them onto the pocket pc. I have been able to put music, videos, e-books, games,maps and more onto my pocket pc!! I bought this at Gefen support's recommendation, when the Gefen product I had bought previously could not do what I bought it to do. My goal was to to connect a PC via DVI to a 27" iMac via Mini Display Port, so that I could use my iMac to display signals from the PC or the iMac by choice, eliminating the need for a separate PC monitor. Admittedly, it never says it can do that in the marketing text, but the Gefen tech support rep assured me that it would do it. Alas, it cannot. Funny enough, Gefen is often recommend due to their "great tech support", but on the two Gefen products I have owned, their tech support has proven not to understand the product and what it can and can't do. They're quick with an answer, I must say. But the answers need to be right for the support to be great in my opinion. I think that I'm done with Gefen products now.

I received the Wilson Sleek in good order and faster then I usually receive items. I looked over the Wilson Sleek and realized the antenna connector on the Wilson Sleek and the connector on the Wilson 800/1900mhz antenna were the same.

I called Wilson Electronics and spoke with technical support and explained to him that all 4 of my Wilson antenna's had the same connectors (one for each vehicle and my big rig). He said he would send me the adapter immediately and at no charge!

I received the adapter in just a few days and it fit all my antenna's to the sleek. I mounted the 800/900mhz antenna and the Wilson Sleek to my car and plugged it in. Placed my phone (Commando)in the cradle with the supplied phone holders.

I live in SW Wyoming where it is difficult to get cell service (no bars). Just putting the phone in the cradle I had 2 bars and when I made a call to California the phone jumped to 4 bars.

Major issue is the return policy. I didn't even get to try the product since I would have had to order another $20 worth of stuff or so to make it work at home which is why I ordered it in the first place, thus I returned it. I was only given about $54 on the $78 product. Also it cost me about $8 to return it. Total amount lost was about $35. If I had known that it was to be used in a car, and that I needed additional parts to use it at home, and that I would be out the $35, I would at least have ordered the additional parts to try it at home. So it goes. I'm not a happy camper on this one. Makes me want to keep purchasing from local stores that have a respectable return policy.

Amazon is shipping the wrong antenna with this Booster. Wilson Electronics has told them many times that the antenna they are shipping with this Booster will not work. Hence the whole package is worthless. This is the first time Amazon has not done the right thing and I am a very big customer of Amazon.

January 2013 Amazon made it right by refunding my money. They need to change the way the product is described. Otherwise they will continue to ship the wrong antenna.

As for the case itself, it is too small for the phone and the phone needs to be squeezed in. If my phone rings, I would not be able to get it out without picking up/hanging up the phone. Either I was sent the wrong item or who knows what. But this was the biggest mistake of purchase I ever made on Amazon.

I believe it's one of the better cases out there for the Nokia E7 phone. Previously owned a "flip" case where the phone snapped into the holder and you just flipped open the cover to reveal the phone. However, these added to the already big size of the phone and made it difficult to hold when you slid open the keypad to text. This case held the phone quite nice and when you tool out the phone you had access to all the features of the phone without being hampered by the case.

It's hard to review cables, but there is a discernable difference between brands. Generally, Belkin is the best in terms of materials, construction, and performance. Some Belkin products I've purchased have a vinyl cover that emits a distinctly unpleasant odor, but this product didn't. Performance was reasonable disk-to-disk transfers ran about 50 MB/sec, but I'm not sure the cable is the limiting factor. My recommendation purchase this cable rather than something cheaper. You won't regret it.

There are a number of reviews on the 'Net already about this much-anticipated device, and I won't claim to make yet another. Just some interesting observations from a week of ownership:

1) I have found only a single program (Skyscape 5-minute clinical consultant) that does not like OS 5. All others so far work like a charm, including LOTS of medical software.

2) While the OS itself really is not much different, the processor has really revolutionized the Palm handhelds. Example: using Tabers medical dictionary on my m505 was a chore, and looking up a word often took >30 seconds. Now I write in real time and get word lookups in 1-2 seconds.

3) My handwriting recognition (Graffiti) is MARKEDLY improved over the m505.

4) The screen is UNBELIEVABLE! Fantastic, useable under all lighting conditions.

5) The battery life is just fine. I do recharge nightly, but I use it a good 2 hours each day, with the backlight at 50% all the time, and rarely get to below a 70% charge.

6) The sliding design is very sturdy. Also, it just FEELS much better in my hands.

7) The D-pad is a huge improvement, and I think more than makes up for Sony's Jog Dial.

8) Voice recording feature is very nice.

9) Does not come with mp3 software built-in, though word is that Real will be releasing an mp3 player for Palm in the coming weeks that will be available free.

10) Only gripe is that Versamail STILL does not synch e-mail with my Mac...

11) Palm has all but said that this device will be OS6 upgradable, which you can't bank on from the Sony products.

Buy one, you will definitely not be disappointed.

Buy PalmOne Tungsten T Handheld Now

The m550 or more commonly known as the Tungsten T is refreshing addition to the Palm product line. It's been a while since Palm took a step in innovation but the Tungsten T is certainly a move in the right direction. If this is a preview of things to come for Palm or OS5 then things really do look bright for the PDA industry. However as great as the Tungsten may be, I think it would be premature to pick up a OS5 unit at this point in time and in the OS's life cycle.

Being the holiday season many PDA manufacturers, particularly Palm OS units, historically don't release any major units. New units generally come out in the 1st and 3rd quarters of the year. This will hold true for Palm and Sony.

If you are a first time buyer the Tungsten would be ok but at that price range you might be better off with a T665C or even an SJ30. If you are looking to upgrade, just hold out for a few more weeks. There is nothing worse then picking up a new PDA and to have a new one introduced only days after.

Despite all negative feedback on its price, it still is an amazing unit. Although i am not a big fan of the flip or even the slider design, the compactness of the Tungsten T is difficult to ignore. As Palm research have shown, the grafitti area is used only about 20% of the time so tucking it away shouldn't pose too much of a problem. However I personally would have prefered a virtual grafitti for more real estate as opposed to a "sliding away" grafitti area.

With many objections on a slider design on many fan sites and user groups Palm went ahead and developed on for their flagship OS5 unit. They felt that if they construct it well enough that they can convince people that the huge decrease in overall volume will be greatly appreciated. (After all it was the ultra slim design of the V that took the industry by storm.) And construct it well they did. The sliding action is smooth and firm with a noticable "clicking" noise to indicate that it is fully open or closed. The material which was used to construct the unit is of good quality and the multidirectional pad is a great addition. But i think the best feature of the Tungsten T (which is not present in ANY OS5 unit to date) is the integrated bluetooth.

Lastly as for OS5, there are many comments about its compatibility with pre-OS5 applications. Many major apps have already been updated. You just need to find the right ones to install. All OS4 optimized apps will work on OS5. Only the apps made for the older OS3 might encounter some problems.

As i always say before you go out and pick up any PDA, i strongly suggest you take it for a test drive and read LOTS of reviews. As for this unit, i think you should just wait a few more weeks. At the very least let the christmas crunch pass. However if you have money to waste, this is not a bad buy at all.

I've had several Palm PDAs and Pocket PCs, and I'm a big fan of them. The new Palm Tungsten for the first time brings the same resolution as the Sony CLIE models along with the Bluetooth technology to the table, and in a small package, and with good screen brightness.

The screen is much better than the M505, but it looks about the same as the M515, which was much better. However, even the M515 can't beat the now aging but still amazing brightness of the original Palm IIIc, which still has the brightest screen of any PDA, although the Handspring Prism's looks to be just as bright.

I compared the screen also to the Sony PEG T665C, and the Sony's is still noticeably brighter, but the Palm's is still very good. Also, the Palm had the nicer screen font. The font was thicker and easier to read than the Sony's, which looks light and thin and a little grainy by comparison, but I don't know if this can be fixed with a custom font package, of which there are several.

I think the big appeal of this model will be the smaller footprint, which fits easily in your front shirt pocket, where I like to carry mine. I compared the Palm with the Sony SJ30, which is its only competition in this form factor, and they are very similar in terms of size. I compared both of them side by side, and the Palm looks to be a tiny bit wider and about the same height, but they're both very close. The Palm costs almost twice the money because of the built-in Bluetooth technology. Also, the Sonys have the jog-wheel feature, which makes them almost capable of single-handed operation.

Both the Sonys and the Palm have a slightly milky appearance to the screen, like my Compaq iPAQ 3650, so I suspect they both have partially back-reflective screens, but I'm not certain about that.

Also, the drop-down graffiti area is pretty cool. I might prefer this to the virtual one on the Sony NR70 and 70V models. My only complaint is that the Graffiti area, at least for the numbers area, seems to be slightly narrower than I'm used to. The unit has a nice, metallic blue finish which makes it more attractive than any other Palm model up to this point. And last but not least, the five-way navigation button and the voice recorder features are useful also, which again, makes this model more competitive with the innovative Sony models.

Overall, this is a great PDA from Palm that should give the Sonys a run for their money, and I'd actually give it 4.5 stars if I could. And the only reason I subtract half a star is the unit's relative expensiveness compared to the Sony T615C, T655C, and T665C models, but again, this is mainly due to the Bluetooth technology, so it's not really comparable to the Sony's in this regard. But if you don't think you need it, the Sonys offer the same features without Bluetooth for less money.

Overall, however, a great PDA from Palm and probably the best thing they've done yet.

As a computer geek and a person who really enjoys PDAs, I had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Palm's new ARM-based line of handhelds. When the Tungsten T hit the market, I was enthralled. It looked like a fascinating product, and I decided it was finally time to upgrade. While the price tag is a bit high, in my opinion the money I spent on the TT all went to a worthy cause.

This model has a beautiful high-resolution color screen. It's also screamingly fast, and I have certainly noticed a difference in speed from my old Palm Vx. I like to use hefty database-type applications such as Pilot-DB and BibleReader, so the added speed is a great benefit to me. It also has great sound, and I look forward to having more multi-media software for this thing. It is not disappointing at all! One of the neatest improvements over older models is that it has become very possible to use all of the included PalmOS apps (such as DateBook, AddressBook, etc) with one hand using just the multi-directional D-Pad.

While at first the dimensions of the TT might seem odd, it feels very comfortable in one's hand. It has a bit more heft to it than my old Vx, and while thicker is much shorter and slimmer. It feels more substantial, which I like.

Now for the drawbacks! Being so new, there is unfortunately lots of old software for earlier Palms that seems to have problems. While most of my favorites moved over to PalmOS 5 and the ARM architecture without problem, a few of them have failed to work correctly. Among these are AvantGo and Quickoffice. However, it seems more common for software to work as expected. DateBK5, Space Trader, iSilo, Pilot-DB, and many others work as expected. Oh yes, and old PalmOS hacks which worked with HackMaster and X-Master also no longer work.

Most of the drawbacks will undoubtedly be solved in a matter of time. I am very pleased with my purchase, and certainly think that the Tungsten T is worthy of its five stars.

The Palm Tungsten T is a great piece of hardware, but having switched from the Pocket PC platform, the software doesn't quite pass muster. While the new Palm OS 5 is not great, neither is the Pocket PC. The Palm OS keeps it simple, whereas the Pocket PC suffers from an over zealous interface (all it's missing is a wallpaper with palm trees and a pina colada). The Tungsten T also seems to operates faster than many Pocket PC, even given the more powerful processors that are standard in Pocket PCs. It's worth pointing out here that standard entertainment software for the Pocket PC (and Sony Clie Palm) is noticeably missing in the Tungsten T bundle, such as an MP3 player and video playback (MP3 player is now available for download on the RealNetworks website). Many competing PDAs now include either Bluetooth or WiFi (but not both). It seems like Palm is entrenched in Bluetooth for mobile computing, whereas more Pocket PCs now include WiFi, such as the new HP IPAQ, and the Toshiba e740 and e755. In April 2003, SanDisk is coming out with an innovative combination WiFi/128MB SD card that should solve this deficiency; a combination WiFi/256 MB SD card will also be released (both at reasonable prices). They are said to work with Palm OS 5.

Overall, the Tungsten T is worth the price (especially after the price drop) because the hardware is very well designed and has only one minor software flaw. The hardware's great design beats out the software's many setbacks. If you're not a demanding user, but want a small PDA for a reasonable price, then this is the PDA for you. For advanced users, you'll have to evaluate competing Palm and Pocket PC PDAs on price, features, design and portability.

No MP3 software bundled with player. The RealOne Palm Tungsten T MP3 media player was released late March, 2003 on RealNetwork's website. Average player without the bells and whistles. No powersaving feature or other extra features. Can't play other file formats [1.5]

Design flaw: "Home" button is on graffiti area, and you can't assign a button to "home". This means that when the slider is up, you can't change tasks (unless task is assigned to 1 of 4 buttons). For example, you can't switch from a game you're playing to the web browser when slider is up and graffiti area is hidden. [2]

Web browser is mediocre. You can surf the Web using Bluetooth to connect to a GPRS (2.5 G) phone, but setup for each session takes a few minutes. I tested Yahoo! Mail, ESPN, Cnet and Washington Post. Graphics are crisp, but web pages are not formatted for Palm. For example, while you can reduce the font size, I couldn't find a way to uniformly reduce the graphics on a Web page, or uniformly scale down a page that is wider than the 320x320 pixel screen, and you have to scroll sideways on many pages. You also can't open multiple browser windows to surf the Web (which would have been useful when I was trying to add email address in Yahoo! mail). [2]

Bundled organizer software has fewer features than Pocket PC (can't assign multiple categories to a contact; can't choose how long to snooze a reminder). [2]

Unlike most bike mounts which expose your expensive phone to the elements and only hold it in place by some plastic mounts which can fail, this one actually protects it in a zippered case. It's also cushioned with foam inserts so that even if the phone somehow hits the road, it is likely to survive the encounter with no damage. It's a little bulky, but not overly so, and I can tilt it so that I can see the display regardless of the angle of the sun. I use the Cyclemeter app, so I have my current, average and max speed in sight along with distance and ride time.

I bought this to use in the Martha Stewart Score Board. I had a huge issue trying to use the bone folder included in that score board without cutting through the paper. This stylus is the answer. I no longer have to worry about how much pressure I put on the tool and I know it won't cut the paper. You do have to use to smaller head to use it in the Martha Stewart Score Board. Be warned it does not store in the provided spot for the bone folder in the regular size board. However, this is because of the curvy grip and I think that is well worth it not being able to store with the board. Great product and it should be the product coming with the Martha board.

I really LoVE this iPad case I get so many compliments and the overall quality is great, I ordered another one for my sister. The outside feel of the case is also really cool. The stand and wake up feat is great but doesn't always work which i don't really mind. Loved the design and the way it protected the edges, but it did start pulling apart around the rubbery glued edges. The new case smell it came with wasn't bad like some said, just took a week to wear off. I am no longer using this case, but I will hold onto it for the future.

Convenient little package of bands. They arrive just like the picture shows, and are pretty good quality. A couple of things to clear up about the item. First, the adaptor WAS included with my order (part of the package). Second, Sandisk duo sticks have faster transfer rates than the Sony sticks (even their high-speed line). The price can't be beat and although I selected the "super-saver" shipping (free) the item arrived within 3 days! Super cool.

If you have a laptop, you can probably transfer data to it via its onboard Ir (infrared) port. If you have a PC, and most do not have Ir ports, this Ir adapter will work, *IF* you have a serial port to spare. Most of us do not have an unused serial port, so such devices require swapping and rebooting. New to the market are USB IrDA adapters. Well, I've only been using it for about 2 days now and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised and 99% satisfied! (1% is lost on the fact that only one computer can use it at a time.)

The quality is top-notch! I thought it might be pixelated, jerky, or buggy but it isn't. It flows and runs like a regular TV. It just feels like you're watching TV.

Ground-breaking technology. This device allows me to watch my Chicago cable TV service while in Paris. It converts the TV signal into an internet transmission. The image is only about 4 x 3 inches in size on my higher density 1680 by 1050 notebook screen but looks very clean and highly viewable. Sound quality is excellent. Transfer rates ranges from 400 to 700 kbps.

Another feature of this product is that it can be used as an internet based remote control. I have one in my mother's senior home apartment. It enables me to view her apartment, view her electronics, and send remote control signals to her electronics whenever she gets stumped. I'm sure there are many other ways to apply this unique technology.

SlingMedia is an exceptional company. The initial release of this product brought rave reviews -uncommon for release 1.0. They did not rest. Since then, they have released new versions which further enhanced the SlingBox.

I want to follow up on my first post about the SlingBox. After my review I was contacted by Blake the CEO of Slingmedia asking me if he could have his support Manager give me a call to discuss my problems. After explaning my story to Larry Lane he asked me if I would give the box another chance. He told me that if I ran into more problems that the box can be sent back no questions asked. I decided that since the CEO of the company can reach out to me as a customer that Slingmedia was concerned how they treated their customers! (How many CEO's reach out to the average customer??).

Larry worked with me personally in setting up my new unit to make sure things went right. After the initial set up I still had a few viewing issues. Larry and his team worked with me on the issues only to find out these issues were due to my router. To make a long story short I replaced my linksys router with a Netgear 624A. My entire network seems to be working much better and the slingbox is GREAT!!!!

I cant say enough how wonderful Blake/Larry and their team was! Without the email from Blake I can honestly say that I would not have a slingbox today or in the future. The people running the company are terrific and have completely changed the way I look at their product! I strongly recommend the product to anyone! The technology is amazing! I cant wait to the summer to sit outside on my deck, get some sun and watch the NY Mets play some baseball!!

My friend explained Slingbox to me, and at first I just didn't get it. Then one day it hit me: I could be in a hotel room, get on my laptop, control my Tivo or cable box via remote repeaters, and watch the streaming video sent from my house. That was when I realized that the way I watched TV was about to change again (since I got my Tivo) and I couldn't wait.

I got a Slingbox as quickly as I could and have absolutely loved it. With the help of the great Dell Inspiron 700m laptop, I've watched and controlled my home TV in the airport, hotels, coffee shops, in my bed, at work, and even had a friend's wife catch up on her O.C. in Singapore! I've docked the SlingPlayer viewer while working on my desktop at home. After watching from work a couple of times, my boss bought one and streams the news all day he's hooked.

The Slingbox looks great, is exceptionally easy to set up, and the software works very well. I'm really impressed with the picture and the dynamic streaming based on bandwidth. Make sure you've planned how you're going to add it to your networkI used the netgear Power over Ethernet bridge to connect to my network from the living room, and I'd recommend it if your TV is far from your network (easy setup, high bandwidth, and no extra radio waves going through your body).

As a Slingbox owner, I highly recommend this product, especially if you've been thinking about getting a TV tuner or Video card with tuner supportthis is a more flexible alternative, and SlingPlayer viewer software can be installed on multiple systems.

P.S. Desperate Housewives was only used for the purpose of alliteration. It is not an admission that I watch it. I did actually watch T.V., although not South Park, from Switzerland, and it worked flawlessly!

I bought this for the price, and for that it is a good value, but otherwise it's not something I would recommend. The scary part is that your Ipad can easily fall out and hit the floor, and the magnets never work to put it into sleep mode.

My club's monthly meeting is able to include our remote member via Skype using this microphone. He can hear everyone equally well around the table, and requested details for sharing with his other Skype buddies. One of the online advertisements had included a picture of a medical conference with this little fellow in the middle of the table, that was helpful.

i ordered this microphone and one other for videotaped conferences, intending to keep the better of the two. This one did not work at all; the only sound on the video was buzzing. It was not the camera because the other microphone worked nicely. It does have a nice low profile and rubber backing to prevent it from sliding across the table, but useless features if the microphone itself doesn't work. The product I'm keeping (and would recommend good product for the price) is the Sony Omni-Directional Mono Microphone.

HP iPAQ 5455 Pocket PC

Well, let me begin by saying that I researched all of the PDAs on the market including Palm products and came away that this unit would be the best choice out there due to its 80211b connectivity. I primarily use Windows and as such though it would be a great tool to use to keep track of my contacts, Outlook messages, and to even sometimes use the IE browser capabilities remotely. After getting the unit, setting it up, and using it for several weeks I ended up returning it. Here's why, 1) The battery power is horrible if you use BlueTooth or the 80211b. I primarily wanted the unit to connect to my Outlook both at home and at work and I found the battery lifetime to be just short of two hours when using the 80211b (with BlueTooth turned off). This made it really tough to be able to attend a long meeting and rely on the 5455 for my email. Yes I could have carried optional battery packs, but I didn't want to do that. After all if this unit is supposed to be all encompassing then I shouldn't need to carry gear with me to support it. 2) The reliability of the wireless is not without its faults. Quite often I had to do soft resets it got to the point that somewhere between 20-30 percent of the time a soft reset was required. 3) The Pocket PC operating system, particularly the aspects related to wireless connectivity and connectivity with the AutoSynch mechanism are not flawless in their implementation you'll find problems connecting, you'll lose connections, and if you have more than one email service/account then you'll have to manually switch each time to get mail from each of the accounts. 4) I noticed the current incarnation of the Pocket PC OS have problems with slowing down in CPU speed when adding more applications to the unit. This is somewhat expected that as you add apps the OS will slow down, but adding just a handful of standard apps to the 5455 brought the peppy default speed of the unit down to almost intolerable. Again, since these were my primary reasons for purchasing the unit if the synching and wireless didn't work perfectly then there was little point in keeping the 5455. After three weeks of giving the 5455 every effort that I could make a case for keeping it I came to the conclusion that it did not meet my needs. A few weeks later I still do not in any way regret the decision of returning it. Taking into consideration the cost of the unit and the poor reliability and short battery life it just didn't make sense for me. I'll wait till HP come out with better battery technology that actually lasts with wireless and I'll wait till Microsoft come out with their next implementation of the OS which will hopefully synchronize and generally work more reliably. Perhaps by the time this happens then we'll have a version available which is built into a digital telephone this would be an even more practical and useful real-world solution.

This should have been the ideal PocketPC for me. With built-in Bluetooth and Wifi, it is a networking powerhouse without the need for sleds. Unfortunately, there appear to be severe production problems with this unit.

I purchased one and had to return it due to frequent lockups. Sure, it's Windows it crashes, but this was obscene. I booted between 7 and 20 times per day! I returned the unit assuming that I had a bad unit and the other one was the same way. Another collegue bought one and it went totally dark after two weeks. We are zero for three.

The CompUSA store looked it up on the computer and noted 13 returns in 22 days. This unit is a disaster. Perhaps in a few months after a ROM pack is released this will be good, but the current (23-Feb-2003) version of 1.00.45 should never have been released.

While an attractive package with built in wireless (Blue Tooth, 802.11B), fingerprint recognition (for enhanced security and easy login), HP has in fact delivered a mess.

The saga thus far: Upon delivery the unit was delivered with a stack of supplement manuals and addendums describing the add-on features, however there was no manual for the Pocket PC 2003 operating system. The manual is 160+ pages, and hidden on the CD as a PDF file (although my first round with tech support couldn't find it on the CD, and pointed me to the web site where he couldn't find it either!) It was explained to me that the O/S is provided by a third party vendor (Microsoft), and therefore HP isn't responsible for it! Right... (Never mind that it is essential to the unit, and is useless without it!) Further, attempts to move the PDF to the iPAQ so it can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader for the Pocket PC when needed proved useless. I personally think this is inexcusable I shouldn't have to download the file to a PC, keep the PC with me at all times, so I can have access to it when I have a problem with the Pocket PC or print out a 160 page book on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper and figure out how to carry it with me. (Kind of defeats the purpose of having a pocket PC!) The unit needs to be delivered with this basic tool.

Next: The unit filed after 2 hours of use. It turned itself on while in my briefcase, got extremely hot, and completely locked up. The 5450 would not reset. Turns out that HP will not send a replacement (unless you want to pay for an additional warranty), so it disappeared for a week and a half (vice the 3 days that were promised when I called technical support). When it was returned, I was informed that they couldn't duplicate the error, so they did nothing. I have since determined that the optional leather executive case sold by HP was designed so that it can readily touch the overly sensitive power switch turning the unit on so it will overheat and run the battery dead. If I don't use the ... leather case (sold by HP for the 5450, it is much less prone to turning itself on and overheating!

The handwriting recognition is poor and difficult to tailor. As often as not, the unit will not exit the keyboard mode without a system reset. (BTW, I find I do 7-8 resets a day at this point between this problem, memory card problems, and wireless problems.)

As for the wireless I have gottent it to work exactly once. After numerous calls to technical support, I have managed to get it to work with one of four wireless networks. According to tech support, the unit will not tolerate 802.11G in the area. They consider it a problem with the 802.11G standards, never mind that my other 802.11B devices are working with no difficulty! It gets worse! The configuration for each network involves multiple control panels that are scattered throughout the O/S, counter-intuitive and poorly documented. You won't gett any help from the FAQ's or technical support web site either. For instance, if you should manage to get the wireless to recognize a network, you then need to go through the network settings control panel, and indicate in three different drop-down boxes that you are connecting at "work" (rather than the "internet" or "home"). Use of any other setting will effectively prevent the device from using the wireless, and requires you to configure a modem (never mind that the whole point of wireless is to avoid using a modem, or you may need different wireless configuration settings at different locations)! (Why work=wireless has yet to be explained to me by technical support.) Clear yet? I thought not...

The latest saga has to do with the SD memory card. It cannot be written to or have the existing files deleted. Suspecting a corrupt file, I tried to find information on formatting the card (or any other information on the memory cards) on the HP web site. There was none. When I called technical support, they informed me that every SD card needed to be formatted before it was used. (Again, nothing in the user guide or the web site). Further, there was no utility provided by HP to do this! I needed to go to a another vendor's web site, and BUY this utility separately (even though it was REQUIRED before I could use the card even the one HP sold me with the 5450!. Despite my better judgment, I bought the utility and low and behold it doesn't work either. Again, how HP can justify not including a basic utility that is required to use the device eludes me.

Finally, this was one of two units I bought for evaluation in my laboratory. The other I gave to my network systems engineer. His story isn't any happier. In addition to the issues I have encountered, his problems have centered around that expansion pack, and the fact that they are such a poor fit, that the unit constantly sees the battery in the expansion pack as going dead (because it fits so poorly) that the unit keeps shutting down. Any devices plugged into the expansion pack are constantly seen as being removed and installed requiring numerous resets as things try to reload.

We have also bought the new Viewsonic pocket PCs and Casios for evaluation. They have been an order of magnitude more reliable that the HP iPAQ 5450, despite (because) fewer features, and further came with complete documentation. None of these have failed to date, nor have we had an issue requiring our contacting technical support.

Our conclusion: the HP iPAQ 5450 is a poorly executed design, lacking basic documentation, with poor support, and should therefore be avoided at all costs.

I've been a long time Palm user starting with a Pro and owning 6 or 7 since, most recently an M515. The screen was what first attracted me to this unit plus the wireless network, well, it 'sort of' worked for a month, but I've had enough. This unit seems like it would be a good idea, but isn't. Installation and initial sync went very smooth, but that was only the beginning.

DAY 1: First day carrying it, it locked up solidly it wouldn't turn off or soft reset, I didn't have the CD w/the manual on it (bad idea) with me, so I didn't know how to hard reset. I tried taking the battery off, but the unit just came back on (in it's locked up state) when the battery was reinstalled so I just let it die. I spent that evening getting it running again and trying to get the wireless networking to connect to my Linksys WAP11. After fiddling way too much, I finally got my mail and MSN Messenger to work, but not the browser. Finally I called HP's support site and was warned that any help he gave me was on a 'best try only' basis no promises we couldn't get the thing to work.

DAY 2: I left the wireless networking enabled and went to work the battery was completely dead by Noon with wireless enabled the battery seems to have a painfully short life. So I spent that evening restoring it again. I went to HP's website and found an external battery ...

Perfect huh? Ordered this puppy immediately only to find it only works with the expansion pack which adds expansion slots, but also a LOT of bulk just to have a reasonable battery life? I called HP to return it and the agent sent me to the parts department for a second battery to carry. .... he assured me that I didn't have the skills to replace the battery. I told him that it just had a little latch on it and it flipped out and I was quite sure I could handle it. He replied that the case was sealed and that no one but HP was authorized to open it. I told him that tech support had asked me to remove the battery to retrieve the serial number from the label under it and didn't see the problem with removing it. He was then VERY annoyed, told me that I didn't know what I was talking about, and hung up. I figured that there will be higher capacity batteries in the aftermarket soon.

Now it's over 3 weeks later and although I haven't missed any meetings or anything because this thing failed me, I've come close, and instead of just grabbing my Palm and using it without giving it any thought, I find myself reaching for it and wondering if it's going to work. I finally decided I've had enough. I picked out one of the new [brand name] Palm OS units w/MP3 and ordered it. I then decided to call HP and see if they would consider a return for a one month old order they did so without hesitation they looked at their records and saw that I had several tech support contacts on it, appologized that it didn't work out and even sent FedEx with a pickup tag.

The Palm is by far a better platform for simple organizer tasks, but the PPC 'horsepower' is great when using spreadsheets and the like I thought I could have both.

I purchased the iPaq 5455 one year ago, directly from HP when it first hit the market, paying $649 plus $200 for a 3 year top of the line warranty. I have had several problems with the unit. Starting with the display on the unit going out only after a month or two of receiving it. The next problem was with the battery loosing its charge. Most recently, I have been having the recurring problem of the unit locking up not powering on. And like others, I have never been able to sync my info wirelessly.

I have placed several calls to tech support. I have troubleshooted the unit while on the phone with them and even sent the unit in for repair a month ago, in which I did not get a replacement unit, although my extended warranty states that I should. I received the unit back from repair and the documentation stated that no parts were replaced. Knowing that I definitely had a problem with the unit, I called tech support to see what was repaired. I was told a big lie that the battery was changed and the ENC part was replaced. Looking at my unit now, I see that it is the same battery that I had when I sent it in for repair.

Thinking that all was fixed with my unit, I downloaded all of my information. The next day I experienced the same problem with the unit not powering on with the power button. I placed another call to tech support in which the tech and myself troubleshooted the unit. The tech told me to hard boot my unit which erased all of my data. I was told not to install the one 3rd party software that I had installed to monitor the situation. I once again reinstalled my information without the 3rd party software. Again, my unit would not power on. Again, I called tech support and angrily described my situation.

Finally, the tech tells me that I will be sent a REFURBISHED unit. I received the refurbished unit two days ago and encountered the same problem once I loaded all of my data on to it. HP tech support has you to hard reset the unit to erase all data, which appears to make the unit work properly, but once the data is loaded, the problems begin. Today I called tech support and told them I am returning the refurbished replacement unit and keeping my original to see what their customer care department does to satisfy me.

I purchased the unit because I felt it would be an asset to my busy professional life, but it has been nothing but a hassle. I have sent several email complaints to HP customer support and finally to the CEO Carly Fiorina. I got a reply email from her address stating that someone would be in contact with me.

Each call and every email, I have gotten the same script of "we apologize for your inconvenience". The tech support department located in India is very unhelpful and they speak to you as if you were an idiot.

The unit has some slick features, but right now I am very dissatisfied and frustrated.
