Belkin G700 Keyboard for Toshiba e330/e335/e740 - Black

Belkin G700 Keyboard for Toshiba e330/e335/e740 - BlackIf you want to maximize your efficiency without lugging around a laptop or a worse, an actual paper tablet, I recommend a Toshiba Pocket PC and keyboard accessory. It attatches very easily and can be used as a full size keyboard to enter information in programs like Microsoft Word and Excell, and is about the same size as your PDA when it is compacted.

I got this for my husband because we recently purchased a pocket pc and he wasn't using it to it's full capabilities. He was tired of fumbling with the little on screen keyboard and was becoming discouraged. This did the trick! He now uses this in place of his laptop and really has turned into a pocket pc promoter. Everyone in his office wants one now. This is a must have in my opinion.

Buy Belkin G700 Keyboard for Toshiba e330/e335/e740 - Black Now

At first, I really want to get an universal IR keyboard, I dont' want to spend anymore money on PDA components everytime I buy a new PDA. But, the problem of IR keyboard is, it drains more battery, and it has trouble communicating with the E700s/300s series Toshiba Pocet PCs (since its IR port is on teh side of the unit). The best part of the this Belkin G700 keyboard is it allows you to charge your pocket pc while you use the keyboard. This feature really maximize the performance of my E740, since I can use wi-fi, icq, check email, listening to MP3s at the sametime when I type, and I don't have to worry about battery life. But the G700 IS NOT a full sized keyboard, so there will be some get used to. Personally I like the keyboard made by ThinkOutside Inc, a former Palm company and they make special keyboards for all Palm pilot models. Their keyboard is not full size, BUT laptop size keyboard. Also the G700 looks a bit flimsy, it uses few sets of springs to push the two sides of the keyboard out, and close. But you don't have any choice, since this is the only special designed keyboard for the TOshiba e700s/300s series PPC. Overall, this is a good add-on for your toshiba PPC, but you need some get-used to.

Seiko Direct Thermal Portable Receipt PRINTER;203DPI;SERIAL 9-PIN;52 CPS,112MM P

Seiko Direct Thermal Portable Receipt PRINTER;203DPI;SERIAL 9-PIN;52 CPS,112MM P
  • Proven, reliable 4" portable direct thermal printer

Love it. We started with the DPU-411 in 1994, and moved up to the DPU414 in 1998. We still have 2 of the 411 in use. They are set for 80 characters and one stays with each machine to print our data. The setup is very easy and takes less than 2 minutes. One is serial and the rest are used as parallel. It's thermal so it fades over time but we can keep the printouts for 7 years. We recommend this printer to all our customers.

Keyspan by Tripp Lite USA-49WG 4 port USB DB9 Adapter

Keyspan by Tripp Lite USA-49WG 4 port USB DB9 Adapter
  • Serial Adapter allows up to four serial devices to be connected to a single USB computer
  • Plug-and-play convenience?DB9 serial ports are seen as COM ports by your computer, and are available for use by any program that accesses COM ports
  • No need for an external power adapter?draws power directly from your computer via the USB connection
  • DB9 serial ports support data transfer rates up to 460 Kbps?four times the speed of a standard built-in serial port
  • Connector 14x DB9 Serial
  • Bus Powered: No external power adapter required
  • Plug & Play: Appear as standard COM ports

I've been using this USB serial interface for a couple of years now. I've used it under Windows XP, Fedora and Ubuntu Linux. The Windows XP drivers are available on Keyspan's website. Fedora and Ubuntu (except version 7.10) include the drivers in the standard distribution.

The serial interfaces are solid, providing good RS-232 drive levels. The interfaces can also handle decent bit rates. I've used it up to 115200 BPS. It's also very convenient the way it is packaged. Especially in embedded systems programming, it's nice to have four serial ports right on your desk top with just the one USB cable running to the computer.

This is the absolute best USB to Serial Comm port adapter.

You'll never need to unplug and replug it in.

You'll never need to go into Device Manager and change the COM port number.

It is a good performer and works well.

Tripplite/Keyspan has 64 bit driver for windows XP/Visa/W7.

I have used this device on 32 bit Vista and on 64 bit Vista.

I have used Keyspans individual port adapters for several years. They work flawlessly and are quite fast. I do a lot of work on high speed serial devices running without flow control. The devices keep up.

I found that I often had 4 single Keyspans cluttering my desk. I wanted this device. When I finally found it, it was a no-brainer. It works flawlessly. (I had hoped it would be less expensive than 4 singles and it is just a little.)

A nice little benefit is I use their static mapping tool to make the ports appear as COM11 thru COM14, eliminating past confusion about which port goes with which device.

Serial is officially a legacy device. New PCs don't have serial ports. But, if you have a lot of serial devices to manage, this is a great way to simplify cabling and management hassles.

This thing works. I am an amateur radio operator (ham operator) and I used an old 486 computer to run several communications and logging applications in my ham station. The applications control my equipment -changing frequency, logging contacts, sending/receiving Morse code, teletype, and other modes. When the old computer crapped out I had a real problem: The old computer had lots of COM ports -new computers have only USB ports. I purchased two different USB-to-serial adapters -neither of them worked reliably. I was a bit reluctant to pay the price for this one but, after reading the comments, I bought it.

This thing is great -it setup in seconds. I connected my equipment to three of the four ports, set up the ports in Windows XP Device Manager (had to set the baud rate), started my old applications and everything worked perfectly.

I bought both the 4 port Keyspan USB-serial adapter and the single adapter after trying IOGEAR versions. I had various software issues with the IOGEAR when switching ports or plugging in different devices, as it would constantly assign a higher port number. I can only think it is a result of its incompatability with Windows XP (in the fine print of the instructions). The Keyspan USB-serial devices have worked extremely well and can easily switch ports. The difference is huge.

Used tis CA-53 cable for my Nokia E60 mobile. Tried a couple of Nokia PC Suites versions but kept getting communication errors. Finally managed to get Nokia PC Suite Ver 3.3.36 and tis works for my E60. Note there are several CA-53 connectivity cables available on Amazon; but get one which lists the Nokia model that you will be using the cable with. Gave 4 star for tis review as I am yet to fully use the cable for all the PC Suite functions.

Looks like I had to have this cable if I wanted to put any pictures from my phone into the puter to send to someone...Either Nokia or TMobile decided to not include the cable in the package when I purchased the phone back in 85'....now that I have the cable I think I've only tried to download half a dozen pictures ...The cable works but now that I have it I don't use it...

GSAstore Wireless Bluetooth® Keyboard Aluminum Stand Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - Models: N8

GSAstore Wireless Bluetooth® Keyboard Aluminum Stand Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - Models: N8000 N8010 N8013 . Color Silver with Black ABS keys.
  • Compatible: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1"Model: N8000, N8010, N8013
  • Low key-distance with new design square key shape
  • Soft touch and tactile feedback with scissor-structure key-switch
  • Ultra slim and fashion, space-saving layout

First things first, it works fine, albeit a little laggy. But my issues are so much with the operation of the keyboard itself, but of the engineering. Indeed, there are several issues that I have with it, but none are complete deal-breakers.

The first issue is that there is no power LED or other indication that the unit is synced because the sync light goes out when it connects (By the way, There is also no CAPS LOCK light, but I knew that when I bought it.)

The second issue is that you must use the tablet only in landscape mode, and the tablet just sits in the slot with nothing to secure it other than gravity, which brings me to the biggest issue I have with it: stability. That short, narrow prop behind the tablet makes it precarious, especially if the surface on which you set the keyboard isn't perfectly flat or has an incline or decline. If you have the keyboard on a flat, level surface, and don't touch the tablet, or only touch it lightly and infrequently, you shouldn't have a problem. But don't dare try to set the tablet in portrait mode, as the keyboard is too light and the center of gravity is too far back on the tablet to keep from tipping over. In other words, forget using this in portrait mode unless you have some method to keep the tablet and keyboard from tipping over backward.

The next issue is the engineering of the clamps that hold it on. Chiefly among the issues with the clamping system is that the clamps are not very strong; I don't trust them to stay together well. Another issue is that if I wanted to slide the tablet down to make a flat unit, I cannot just lower it. Instead, I have to rotate it 180° so the top of the tablet is on the space bar side, otherwise the clamps interfere with the power button; on the other hand, when I want to close it, I simply tilt it forward and slide the bottom to the back of the keyboard. Surely this arrangement could have benefited from better engineering.

The good news is that it is aluminum, which makes it very light, very thin, and offers additional protection. I believe the keyboard + tablet is still lighter than an iPad! Also, I've typed on worse keyboards. As far as looks or aesthetics go, it looks pretty nice when it is closed or when it is in use. And since it is Bluetooth, I can use it with other devices, such as my cellphone.

To summarize, the stability issue is close to untenable, but the lightness, thinness, and the fact it does work pretty well means it gets three stars in my book.

On the whole, I'll keep it. But I'd still rather have another solution.

Upon investigation, I discovered that the iPad tends to slip down during use, causing the buttons to be inaccessible. For this reason alone, we have discontinued using it. I haven't bothered to attempt to return it, but wish I had. I am here to buy him another one, probably similar to the one I bought for my daughter, which I've reviewed today as well and we love it. Just need to find one with a more masculine style.

BoxWave Sony Reader Daily Edition ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector - Premium Quality Anti-Glar

BoxWave Sony Reader Daily Edition ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector - Premium Quality Anti-Glare, Anti-Fingerprint Matte Film Skin to Shield Against Scratches - Sony Reader Daily Edition Screen Guards
  • Award Winning Anti-Glare Sony Reader Daily Edition Screen Protector
  • Dust Repelling
  • Bubble-free Application
  • Fingerprint Free
  • Sized to specifically fit the Sony Reader Daily Edition

I have a Sony PRS900, which I love. I love it so much that I want to make sure that the screen doesn't ever get scratched. Toward that end, I've been using this screen protector for about a week and a half, and am mildly satisfied. Her are the pros and cons.

PROS:

-This screen protector DOES cut down on, but doesn't eliminate, glare. If you've ever used a kindle which has a very dull rather than sharp glare that is the effect this screen protector has on the Sony. Instead of that really shiny reflective glare, this blunted glare is much easier to handle.

-The sensitivity of the touch screen is not much diminished by this screen protector, either using fingers or the stylus. I've found myself having to press ever-so-slightly-harder to turn the page, but not so much that one notices after ten minutes of adjustment.

CONS:

-It may just be my ineptitude, but this screen protector is near impossible to get on without small air bubbles. I tried putting it on four times and settled for having a few very minor air bubbles that are really only visible when I look at the machine (in off mode) from an angle. You will be supplied with a plastic strip to help comb out the air bubbles when putting the screen protector on, but in my experience, it doesn't really help.

-I have noticed that the screen protector does render the screen's resolution a little less clear and pronounced. When my screen was protector-less and clean, the text was slightly crisper and darker than with this protector on. Also, I am quit sure that this protector shows finger prints a little more obviously than the Sony screen itself.

All in all, I probably would buy this product again, only because I am not sure the 'cons' would not apply to ALL screen protectors. And I consider the safety of knowing that my Sony won't get scratched worth the trade-off of a few very faintly visible air bubbles and slight diminution of contrast.

Buy BoxWave Sony Reader Daily Edition ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector - Premium Quality Anti-Glar Now

Completely unusable thing. I put it over my PRS-900 and than drop out to the trash bin.

Same and even worse glare, impossible to put this protector withoout bulbs. I bought original protector for Nook and doesn't have any of this issues.

So I will never buy any thing from this prodcucer don't spend your money on this junk too.

i bought this screen protector for my Sony Reader Daily Edition and it does its job i admit it could cut down glare even more and i hope the manufacturer will improve the protector in this aspect next time around. but the protector does protect the screen and i haven't had any problems with it. it takes a bit of patience to put the protector on without getting a bit of air bubbles, but not too bad included is a plastic card and small microfiber wipe to help you apply the protector onto your Reader. the product works fine but a bit pricey, in my opinion.

I loved this a lot, and then left it on a Delta plane. I miss it greatly. This reader had the best options for multiple venues when I purchased it.

The Anti glare screen protector does not help with the glare at all. It does protect the screen from scratches. I really bought this item for the anti glare. It was very expensive and really does not work. Definite waste of money!!

SanDisk USB SmartMedia Reader (SDDR-09-01)

SanDisk USB SmartMedia Reader
  • Fast transfer speeds of up to 600 KBps
  • Small footprint
  • Easy installation
  • No AC power or batteries required
  • Connects to any USB-enabled Macintosh or USB-enabled PC with Windows 98 or 2000

Mine works great. I have transferred thousands of photos to my PC without a hitch. It is so small it sits on top of my monitor and is known to my system as device G. All the folks that have reported problems with installation undoubtedly had those problems. I didn't. And I have a Zip drive, a CD/RW drive and 4 devices total hooked up to my USB ports, including a printer and DSL modem. Before this mess would work on my 2 year old Dell, I had to download new BIOS for the machine. Anytime you add stuff to a PC, there may be conflicts that need resolving. But I don't believe this SmartMedia card reader is the total cause of anybody's problems.

Buy SanDisk USB SmartMedia Reader (SDDR-09-01) Now

I installed the San Disk Smart Media Reader USB version (they call it the ImageMate) on my computer with Win98. Installation was a snap by following the instructions, and I was uploading pictures from my 32meg smartmedia card in less than 5 min.

The directory acts just like another removable-disk drive (assigned F: on my computer) and is labeled USB when viewed after clicking on My Computer icon.

It sure beats uploading from the camera.

Read Best Reviews of SanDisk USB SmartMedia Reader (SDDR-09-01) Here

I have 2 of these SanDisk USB readers (they will read only 1 type of memory card, so if you have devices with CompactFlash, MultiMediaCard memory, SmartMedia, etc., you'll need 1 reader per format). They can be difficult to set-up, as the software (in both cases) required an update from their website (nice site, user-friendly) and, more importantly, there are known conflicts with other device drivers you may have on your computer (such as CD-RW drives and Zip drives). While these conflicts are mentioned on the SanDisk website, the solutions they offered were not always helpful. Once solved, this device is great. I have since purchased the Viking reader and have encountered no conflicts at all.

Want SanDisk USB SmartMedia Reader (SDDR-09-01) Discount?

I finally ordered the SmartMedia ImageMate, even after reading some pretty horrific reviews (and some very good ones). The SanDisk web page says to check the CDW EasyCreate, and mine was OK (3.5c, "c" makes it OK). Received the reader, installed the software, plugged it in to an empty USB port, stuck in a half-full SmartCard from my Olympus 360L camera, clicked on the "G" drive, and there it was all of it! Downloaded 40 images in 15-20 seconds (not 20-30 minutes!), played around with uploads, deletes, any old files (not only images) WORKS LIKE MAGIC! (**FAST** magic...) I have Windows 98, Pentium III at 733 MHz, a Costco USB splitter, 3 or 4 other USB devices, shut down & restart each day,and the system still crashes once a day or so. Pretty standard setup, I think. Good luck to all!!!

I own a Canon Digital Elph camera that uses CF cards. I purchased this reader so that I wouldn't have to hook up my camera to the computer (and run down the batteries) each time I wanted to download photos.

The drivers installed easily, and I haven't had a single problem with it. I suspect that the other guy just has some weird software incompatibility issue that could happen with any device or software.

I love this case because its really durable, but it doesn't fit the phone! I bought this in the Verizon store, and the associate and I tried several cases with no success. The problem is that the case fits too tightly over the buttons, so it gets stuck on them, causing it to push the volume up and down nonstop, and locks/shuts off the phone. VERY frustrating. I decided to stick with it and try to just stretch it out, but another option can be to cut out the panels. The volume now works, but the lock button still gets stuck often and I have to lift the case to lock/restart my phone. Decide for yourself if its worth the aggravation......

The box that my pen came in had a peel-off sticker covering the old cpen 20 name. The peel-off sticker said c-pen 3.0 The box that my pen came in was entirely different then what is advertised above. The software in the box said Cpen 20. The pen is black, not grey like in the pix. These people are doing something slick! Stay away!

Buy Ectaco C-Pen 3.0 Handheld Scanner Now

I bought this product to help me with note taking for my Master's. I was very disappointed in it. The pen itself feels very flimsy. It DOES NOT come with a standard USB cable, instead it comes with a cable that has a male end that looks like it should plug into a phone or other mobile device. This cable also has a spur that comes out of it with a female end that will accept an external hard drive cable (the one page directions did show the pen with a standard USB cable).

The software was fairly straight forward to load. The installation process put an icon in my taskbar and a shortcut on my desktop. When I clicked on the shortcut it told me that another instance of the program was running and that I should uninstall it and then restart the scanning program. It took me awhile to figure out that it was refering to the instance of the program running in my taskbar. After that I just ignored the desktop shortcut.

I then connected the scanner pen to my laptop and attempted to scan. Nothing happened. I realized that my icon in the taskbar wasn't showing the pen connected. The only way I could get the pen to connect was to right click on the icon and select a setting. This connected the pen but I still wasn't scanning. I couldn't get the scanner light to come on at all. I then uninstalled and reloaded the scanning program with all of the same results.

I contacted Ectaco through email and explained my steps and the results that I was having with their product. After 3 working days of no response from technical service I sent the item back to Amazon.

I've heard really good things about this device, not just from the reviews here but other students who have successfully used it. I want to believe that I just got a defective product (it happens) but the total absence of a response from technical support, the non standard USB cable, and the software quirks all add up to the one star review.

When I first handled this thing after taking it out of the package, I was about ready to seal it all up and ship it back. It seemed too light for it to really be worth anything. But, the wife insisted I give it a shot, and get our bills organized. Boy am I glad I listened to her, this C-Pen has made my life so much easier. I did invest in a hard case for it though, just to be sure.

I do a lot of traveling for work, and that means a lot of receipts for expense reports. I was thinking about getting one of those smart scanners they advertise on television, but then I heard about this, and thought I could get more use out of it. Admittedly, it took a little to get used to just what angle to hold the scanner at for the best results, but as soon as I had that down, making up those spreadsheets is extremely fast, and I even use it to pull out quotes for presentations.

In an attempt to reduce the clutter in my filing cabinet, I decided to get rid of some of the industry magazines I had been holding onto. Problem was there were tips and tricks that I wanted to save. A co-worker of mine suggested I just digitize what I wanted, and lent me their C-Pen 3.0. The thing was so easy to use, and very comfortable. There were a lot of magazines to go through, but my eyes got tired before my hand did. The plastic is a little flimsy, so I can understand why my co-worker has the thing in a hard-shelled case.

Starting from scratch, it was not difficult to convert almost all language into English. Unfortunately, the resident software, which cannot be erased, still had two apps in Japanese. If you activate either, the language of the entire PDA becomes Japanese. Unless you know Japanese or have a friend who does, and you can get back to English, you're S.O.L. I bought this Speaker/mic adapter to be able to use my VX-7 with other brands push-to-talk microphone/earpieces. It doesn't work.

I've tested two brands: Motorola talkabout mic/earpiece fits, I can hear but I cant transmit. A Trisquare XRS mic/earpiece doesn't plugs completelly (its 2mm longer) and cant hear, as it continuously transmits.

Does what it is supposed to do, good fit, seal, and connection. Cable is a little stiff if you happen to live in Alaska and are using it at -40, other than that, great!

I am using this cable to connect my VX5 to a TinyTracker APRS unit. Seems to work well. I received the cable within a week and am ready to hit the road.

iGadgitz Pink EVA Travel Hard Case Cover Sleeve for New Amazon Kindle Touch Wi-Fi 6" E Ink Display E

iGadgitz Pink EVA Travel Hard Case Cover Sleeve for New Amazon Kindle Touch Wi-Fi 6' E Ink Display Ereader 3GI like to keep my kindle touch naked when reading it. I like how light and thin it is. I wanted a cover that would keep it safe when not in use. I tend to be a bit rough on my kindles (this is my third). I take them everywhere and leave them on sofa's and coffee tables frequently. I needed something that would prevent me having to use the protection plan should someone accidently put something on it or sit on it O_o. This item was perfect. The price was even better. I love it. Although I do imagine it could be difficult to clean should it get dirty (but I'm not a messy person so I don't worry about that).

It does have a plastic smell when you first get it. Air it out and it's fine. Since I don't read with it on my kindle it has not been a problem at all. I just sprayed a bit of Fabreeze on it and moved on.

****HOWEVER DELIVERY SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!!*** (I ordered through igadgtiz)

Here is my story:

I ordered the pink kindle cover on January 4th 2012. I ordered the item using my Amazon Prime membership (two day delivery) which assured me I would receive the cover by January 7th. When Saturday arrived and I still had not received an email confirming shipment (or the product) I decided to investigate. My kindle cover was not scheduled to arrive until January 11th. I found this troubling since Amazon was advertising that were I to order the kindle cover that day (using next day service), I would be guaranteed delivery by January 9th. Seriously? I could order it on a Saturday evening and get it monday morning? I ordered mine on a Wednesday and apparently was not going to get it until the next Wednesday (using TWO DAY DELIVERY). Naturally this upset me. I sent an email to iGadgitz at 2:33pm on January 7th wanting to know why my item was not going to arrive until the 11th when I'd ordered it on the 4th. I did not receive a reply until January 9th in which they blamed shipment on Amazon. They did not offer any assistance or offer to correct the issue in any way.

So my word of advice is this: If you are getting a great price as I did (under $6), go for it but don't expect prompt delivery or effective customer service. The product is wonderful. It's a shame that the company is run so badly. Were it not for the service I would recommend every body to get this. It is perfect for those of us who like to read the kindle without anything on it.

Pocket DLP Pico Projector for iPhone 4/4s (Telstar-MP07)

Pocket DLP Pico Projector for iPhone 4/4s
  • Slim, portable design for iPhone 4 and 4s.
  • Includes a 2100MAH external battery to power your iphone
  • TI DLP Famous Optical Technology. 15 ANSI Lumins, Built in Speaker.
  • Supports export movie and images from iPhone 4/4S, IPOD TOUCH4 via USB cable.
  • *NEW* download the App "Projout" to project PDF, WEB, IMAGES and more.

Projector washes out yellow hues pretty bad. This causes some of your videos to just diappear when projected. Projector is only good for videos and pictures. You can not project other applications through the projector. Finally, build quality is a bit suspect. Had to return item since power switch was of low quality and would turn unit on and off due to a loose connection. A friend has the same projector without any power swithc issues, so quality control may not be consistent with this manufacturer.

This projector is a great item for watching movies or showing photos to other people. The picture quality is great and the item is very easy to use. The only downside is that the volume of the speaker is very low, however this is easily overcome using a blue tooth speaker. The projector will also get very hot after about 2 hours of use and cause the phone to overheat.

Received the package today. The package came in unsealed and after I opened it I realized immediately that the Telstar logo printed on the front bottom of the projector is not properly aligned. Next, I plugged my iPhone 4S to the projector and downloaded the "PROJOUT" app per the instruction. I tried to use this thing to play web pages and photos as per the instruction sheet but the projector light never actually come on. I charged the projector for 15 minutes but still nothing happened. I am very disappointed by the build quality of the device and since I am leaving the country tomorrow I have to now rush to UPS to return this thing and this completely ruined my last day schedule. Maybe others had a different experience but I am certainly not impressed. I strongly encourage the original seller or the manufacturer to look into the good I am returning and I also question how Amazon could have ever allowed this to happen.

Aluminum Metal Case for Dell Axim X51/X51V/X50/X50VAluminum Metal Case for Dell Axim X51/X51V/X50/X50V (Extended Battery) (Black)

I really like the new Annodized Black Aluminum case that I got for my Dell Axim X51V PDA. It fits in the case perfectly even with the extended battery. The case is also nicely lined with rubber to prevent scratching. Also, the annodized outside of the case looks very durable. My wife uses annodized pots and pans. They seem to last forever. Although I have not had the case very long, I believe it will probably outlast my PDA.

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card

Toshiba 8GB High Speed SDHC Memory Card(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)This memory card is compatible only with devices (usually cameras) that can use SDHC, a relatively new high capacity memory card that greatly increases the storage space without changing the size of the card from the maximum 2 GB of regular SD cards. Check your camera/device to make sure you can use this before you spend the money. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for 2GB of SD memory. This card holds tons of 10MP photos -my camera lists 2000 photos at 9 megapixels, but I've never been able to max it out. If you really use a lot of memory, you may want to consider the pricier (and twice as large) Toshiba SDHC Memory Card 16GB.

Consumers should shop around for the best price in 8GB SDHC cards since one manufacturer doesn't necessary create a better card than another and since prices often change. As long as you stick with known brands and reputable dealers, you should not have any problems.

Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder

Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder
  • MP3/WAV (BWF) recording, with files saved directly to SD/SDHC memory cards
  • 44.1/48/96kHz sample rate selections, in 16 or 24-bit quantization
  • Switchable balanced XLR Mic/Line inputs with +48V phantom power
  • Battery-powered operation via 4 AA Alkaline, providing over 5 hours of typical operation (unit also accepts off-the-shelf rechargeable NiMH batteries. Batteries not included)
  • USB 2.0 data port for fast transfer of files to PC/Mac

Update Notes: 10/2010: Another buyer asked me to look into the power draw for battery usage reasons. After using the TWO independent battery conservation modes on the 661 (turn off the leds and minimize the big display from 5 rows to just one row of data) the jumpy current waveform settled down to 315 mA DC +/15 mA. For battery usage, you can use a 315mA draw for conservative recording power usage estimates. So that perspective users of the 661 can get a feel for it I've uploaded 5 most often seen sample screenshots with notes in the pictures section above. The notes cover what each screen does and how the function keys work. The instruction manual shows you how to wire pushbuttons and resistors to the 4 terminal remote plug which is VERY hard to find (most are 3 terminal left/right/ground) you can use the 3 terminal because the only 2 points you need are ground and the tip, but here is the 4 pin version for $0.28 on amazon 6FT 3.5 mm to 3 RCA AV Camcorder Video Cable Sony JVC 6 with this cable and the instructions in the manual you can build your own remote with LEDs and extended switches beyond the marantz remote from the PMD660 Marantz RC600 Mic Mount Remote Control which could be operated by computer or other automated systems. Basically the 4 terminal plugs are becomming more common now. The resistor values chosen for pushbutton operation are common values and easy to find.

UPDATE 8-2010:

I've put alot of hours on my PMD661, made a custom case for it, and now I must report a MINOR negative about a whole class of products (the 661, the H4n, certain flashlights, etc)

While doing flashlight testing on the Fenix TK-40, 'Menace' pointed out that it seemed to drain AA batteries without being used AT ALL while a similar light, the TK30 did not. I confirmed his findings using an inline ampmeter a small amount of power was flowing with the light turned off. As I measured other products that used the AA NiMH cell, the problem proved to be a bigger issue than just one flashlight.

This "trickle" power is just like your car leave it in a garage at the airport for 30 days and don't expect the battery to be full when you return. The amount is small, but placing a plastic strip between a battery and the spring then routing it out of the battery compartment will stop the power from flowing. The "off" power is higher on the PMD661 because it has a timer and can turn itself on for play or record functions with preprogrammed times which other recorders can not do.

Update 9-12-2009 I just returned from a cruise ship using the 661. I used a Canon hs-10 avchd camera for capturing the main stage video and the 661 to plug into the ship's mixing board for audio. The ship's audio engineer was excited to see the 661 and hapily pulled out an XLR patch cord set to give me the house mix line level out, which was recorded in the same lossless format (24bit/48 khz) used by the camcorder audio making synchronization in adobe premiere pro a breeze. The final benefit was hearing the show audio as it left the mixing board to the amps instead of being picked up by the camera set on a tripod in the audience full of echo and laughter, clapping etc. The final production to blu-ray disc sounded like I was right on stage with the camera. The marantz ALC circuit performed better than expected and prevented digital clipping while maximizing dynamic range. End of edit.

[ACTUAL PRODUCT REVIEW BEGINS HERE]

When Marantz added a line level XLR input that bypassed the microphone preamps as opposed to just a mic level input in the 660 (prior model) I finally jumped at it. Since I work alot of mixing boards I have access to the final stereo mixdown at line level voltages. Whats the big deal? Recording at line level gives you 20dB more signal to noise thats 100 times better for those who don't speak dB compared to mic level xlr inputs. Also recorders that put an attenuator in front of microphone amplifiers tend to be noisy marantz is not built this way (the H4n I use for MIC level recordings is it is not well suited to line level input because it must attenuate the signal to 0.8% before recording it) If you look at your dvd player at home all the outputs are line level simply to get rid of noise. With such a fabulous recorder, why in the world would you want 100 times more noise in your recordings?

There are many other factors Marantz did that made the 661 the optimum professional recorder to get the display is bright and easy to read under all lighting conditions, they used a 1/4" headphone jack so the little 3.5mm headphones wouldn't pull out at the worst moment (another pro move) and they improved the case quality. There is also a digital input for people who are 100% digital already, however it stops at 44.1/48 KHz sampling.

Given these features, the PMD-661 sits head and antlers above all the other compact recorders out there offering professional connectivity at an economical price. It's also fully customizable the bright display is dimmable through 8 steps for indoor club use at night, and it features dual rca line level outputs for analog playback. About the only thing I would like to have seen would be a worldclock input for synchronizing analog recordings to digital cameras, but the size of the bnc connector would have nixed that option in this handheld product.

Prices are starting to drop I bought in early but you can save 50 bucks off the original price. Good job Marantz (from a former dedicated tascam fan!)

PROS:

+2 levels of power saving (dual VU meter cutoff and 5 line down to 1 line OLED display) both are independent of each other

+runs on AC power through a 5V converter and also runs off USB power when doing file transfers

+Easy to create multiple folders and levels within them using the 4-way rocker buttons for character selection in fact naming your settings is also easy.

+remote control is customizable with just resistors and switches if you know how to solder and need to operate it by computer or other external devices

+XLR ins are well designed and quiet compared to other products on the market.

+1/8" line level TRS input as well lets you use a 3.5mm trs male to male jumper for recording computer outputs

+digital input as well [COAX] I purchased a Cables to Go 40019 Optical to Coaxial Digital Audio Converter (Black) when needed for $13

+2 ea built in mics as the 4th source

+tripod mount

+pre-record buffer captures 3 seconds of audio prior to entering record

+standard SD card format can be ejected and read on a pc quickly instead of doing USB transfers

+easily updates firmware when improvements are made

+12 hour runtime on 2700 mah nimh cells with full power conservation recording mp3 from XLR in (tested)

+When batteries are exhausted it closes all files and shuts down politely.

+internal stereo speakers can be used to monitor recordings or 1/4" headphones

+rugged, well built design including the battery door which has a large latch to prevent accidental opening or loss

+ALC design is well engineered and not noticable in recordings seems like it uses fuzzy logic to prevent clipping.

+coaxial manual level adjustment allows for separate l/r level difference and ganged level adjustment of both simultaneously

Cons

-timer based recording draws more "off" power inserting an insulator made from a plastic battery case easily prevents draining batteries until you need to start if you do not use the timer functions.

-can not entirely shut off the display most minimal power usage is to shut off LED vu meter and just have one line of text in the OLED window with essential data on it.

-lacks a 1/8" mic in but has a 1/8" stereo TRS line in instead so all mic level voltages must go in via XLRs

-4 input sources but only 3 personalities means one input won't be used without reconfiguring (usually digital in)

-lacks digital out (other than USB and removing SD card)

Buy Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder Now

Yes, the price on this baby is steep. You can get a pretty good Marantz HT receiver for this money.

But what you get for the price of two Edirol HDs is a leap in sound quality, build quality, and ease of use. Build quality may or may not matter in your situation. The way my stuff gets hit in the field, it's important for me. Camera tripod mount is great for this unit--it sets it apart from the mics on mic stands and helps others to notice the piece of high-end gear on the stand and try to be careful around it.

Data dumps are a breeze in Mac and Windows. I've had no file misreads yet, anywhere.

Line-in XLR allows full low-noise field mastering in a multi-mic stereo setup.

hi-res lossless is the selling point for many at this price level. There is simply nothing else at this price point that can do this resolution.

And because of the XLR line ins, your hi-res lossless recordings will have an exceptionally low noise floor.

None of the mid-level digital recorders can do this, and this is why I ponied up.

It sounds so much better than its lower-priced competition that it belongs in this price category beyond them.

If you want Edirol quality sound, Marantz makes the 620 for you, a thoroughly competent unit in its price class.

But if you have significant audio to record and you are willing to spend an extra 300 bucks to get far better audio quality, this unit will make you happy.

I'll be brief; First off I will state that I am very particular, and hard to please. I have been in the audio/music/broadcast business about 40 years

I have not used any of the other flash recorders. Prior to purchasing I did heavy research and the PMD661 fit my needs. This has the features I want, and the sound quality is amazing. I have used it with a Rode NT4 stereo mic, a Sennheiser shotgun mic, a Sennheiser broadcast headset, and direct from the console via spdf digital. All produced great recordings.

The internal mics will do in a pinch, but are not the best, and the preamp for the internal mic is noisy. The external mic preamps are clean and quiet. At first I though there was a lot of noise, but it turns out to be from the headphone amp. The actual files sound great.

Transferring tracks is a breeze

The design and build quality are fantastic

cons;

Headphone amp is VERY weak seriously. I would pay for a mod.

Software included is for Windows only

Internal mics pick up a lot of handling noise.

No timecode sync

Cost a bit high but then well you get what you pay for. This is suitable for professional work.

My purchase through Amazon was quick and easy as usual.

Buy one. You will not be disappointed

Want Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder Discount?

I'm from Brazil and I bought this item because i'm coordinating a sound bank project

here, in the context of a sound design school. The school bought zoom H4n with directional Akg mics

My setup is a Rode Ntg-1 Rode NT4, Rode Blimp and Marantz PMD661.

Some considerations:

1 The recorder is very good, very easy to use. Mutch better than Zoom in terms of sound quality

and built quality. Zoom though, comes with some very nice features, like a swiss knife.

Limiter is one of them that Marantz doesen't have and can be very usefull.

Other like a metronome is useless for me, but can be nice for bands or musical groups that want to record rehearsals.

2 I did some recording of the cheering for the first Brazilian match in the world cup with North Korea in São Paulo, with the NT4 and the internal mics. The difference is huge.

The Nt4 gives us a very nice sound stage. Since i was in a neighbourhood with lots of residential buildings we can here a lot of sounds coming from everywhere and NT4 delivers it.

The internal mics not. So, not good for ambience and similar sounds.

3 Well, I did a lot of research and MaRANTZ seem to be the best for me, considering i use it for also different purposes. I needed something with good quality for ambience and foley

and also internal mics that could be usefull(not like those of the Fostex Fr2-Le for instance). So i'll use the

internal mics just for rehearsals and interviews (i'm also a musical director for a theater company).

They are ok for that purpose.

4 When you use just one entrance in stereo recording mode, like a directional mic on L, the other Chanel (R) sounds very noisy in the headphone.

So using just one entrance you are obligated to use the true mono recording feature.

But on the other hand it's very nice, because you don't need to ocupate useless space in the sd card.

Well i loved it, i bought also the Marantz Carry case, it fits the unit perfectly and it has a lot of openings for the cables

and the entrances. But it just fits the unit, anithing else, like extra batteries and cables must be carried

in a extra bag.

I've owned this unit for a few weeks and I must say that Marantz really hit one out of the park with this one. I had previously owned a PMD660 and it was a nice enough unit, but I could never understand its wild popularity. It had a cheap feel to it and the sound was mediocre. The 661, on the other hand, is a tank. Think of the 660 as the rough draft for this finished product. Just about everything is done right this time and the sound through the improved preamps is significantly cleaner. I've read some comments that it may be a little large, especially considering how compact much of the competition is nowadays, but I think the size is perfect. You can easily hold it in one hand and the display is big, bright and easy to read at a glance.

The only improvement I can think of offhand, possibly in a 2nd generation unit (are you listening Marantz?) would be a color display. As easy as this one is to read it would be even easier if record mode glowed with a red "rec" and pause with a green "pause."

Highly recommended.
