(Note: The only difference between the e750 and e755 is that the latter e755 comes with a photo viewer software title on the companion CD. In fact, the machine in the e755 packaging is labeled "e750," so I'll refer to it as e750 in this review.)

Featuring a new mobile processor, the most internal memory of any PDA (64MB RAM plus 64MB non-RAM for a total of 128MB), built-in 802.11b wi-fi, the best PDA screen from Toshiba so far. and good battery life, the e750/e755 is close to being perfect. The compact (0.6 inches thin) and attractive form factor is a huge plus, as well.

The new Intel processor (PXA255 running at 400Mhz) is without doubt the star of the new line-up. It's an updated version of the first-gen Xscalar processor, which wasn't getting good reviews due to lack of optimization options. The e750/e755 *is* optimized for the new processor, which results in speedy application launches and operations. Nothing gives a Pocket PC user more pleasure than seeing his/her favorite app come up instantly. The e750 also allows you to switch between two speeds, hence you can choose between higher speed or better battery life. Even at the lower speed, PPC apps feel quick and responsive. The LiIon battery is user replaceable, and an optional "extended" battery is available now from Toshiba.

What's left to improve for Toshiba is their lackluster customer support. Also, because their PPCs are made by an OEM in Taiwan rather than in their own plants in Japan, the build quality is still a bit lacking, but the e750/e755 seems to be better made than the error-prone e740.

Update with more details:

The e750 is indeed a joyful PDA! The high price and the lack of a built-in camera aside -but who really needs the latter, right? -it really comes close to being a master-of-all-trades device. I haven't tested the wireless features as much as I had hoped, due to the fact there just aren't many free hot spots around these days. But I'll update this review when I get more hands-on experience in this area.

In terms of everyday use this is a true workhorse. I'll talk more about the specs below, but the numbers don't really reveal how pleasant using the e750 is. The hundreds of annoyances that plagued the e740, its older cousin, have been fixed. There are far fewer crashes and syncs go more smoothly. At just 6.5 ounces, while not the lightest Pocket PC, you get something very close to a handheld computer, especially when you get the foldable keyboard!

The e750 has a total of 128MB of RAM, 32 of which is ROM, 32 is flash-ROM (which means content stored on it won't go away even if the battery is completely dead... think of it as a small hard disk without moving parts), and the rest 64 is true user-accessible RAM. Having a real 64MB to play with is a bliss, especially for someone like me who started out with 16MB on the Casio EM-500 and last saw 46MB on the HP iPaq 1910. The extra 18MB makes a big difference. Now I can play Doom and Quake at the same time!

Given the thin form factor of the e750, it still amazes me how it can feature both a Type I/II CompactFlash (CF) slot as well as a Secure Digital (SD) slot. Since wi-fi is already built-in, both can happily be used solely for storage expansion. The highest capacity for SD right now (as of April 2003) is 512MB, but that costs a small fortune. The best value belongs to 256MB cards, and I highly recommend the one from Lexar (see my review there). If you put in a 512MB SD and a 512MB CF, you'll get 1GB of extra storage for under one-hundred-fifty dolrs! The CF slot can probably be used for other peripherals; but the situation is not clear right now as to which CF peripherals will be supported in the e750.

The 3.8-inch (measured diagonally) screen is the largest among Pocket PCs on the market today, and the best from Toshiba so far. I personally like the screens on the iPaq 1910 and Viewsonic V35 better, but this screen is more than "good." The resolution is still PPC's standard 240x320, so it would be nice to see someday PPC manufacturers would go higher than that. I'd love a PPC the size of the e750 but with a 4" screen and 320x480 resolution!

There are a lot of optional accessories you can get for the e750, including the foldable keyboard and extended battery mentioned above. This is truly an exciting newcomer to the PPC family... one that looks and performs like a winner.

I've recently made the decision to purchase a 755 to replace my

aging Palm unit. I'm still in the learning phase of using the

755/Pocket PC and so far I'm mostly pleased. So, instead of

reiterating the specifications of the 755 I will offer a

comparison to my old device and some observations:

The 755 has 48 times more memory than my 2MB Palm. Great.

The 755 has 2 memory card options. My Palm is ancient in this

respect, but more modern palms address this via SD.

The 755 uses a lot of juice (color screen/fast processor).

I get about 2.5 months of service on my Palm on two AAA

batteries (using the backlight on rare occasions. I

haven't tested how long the 755 would last on one charge,

but have seen the battery indicator go to 80% after an hour

of trying a load of things (browsing, music etc).

One item to note: after a few days of use I'm getting an

incorrect 99% charged battery on the Settings/System/Power

application. I'm not sure if I'm getting this because I

upgraded to ActiveSync 2.6 doesn't budge from 99%.

The 755 has WiFi built in. Did I really need this? Not really,

but I now can say Hey check this out man! So far I haven't

had any problems with JavaScript or formatting while viewing

my favorite sites. The only problem is the amount of scrolling

you will need to do to view the entire page.

Images look great on this unit. I used Photoshop Elements,

in batch mode, to downsize a folder of images to the screen

dimensions of the 755 and created a neat little slide show in

PhotoBase, an application that comes with the 755 (not the

750). You can imagine how thrilled I was to see color images

after using a Palm mono unit for almost 5 years.

The Windows Media player works better than I thought with MP3s

(I haven't viewed any movies with it yet). The music plays back

smoothly even when I am doing other things (eg File Explorer,

slide show). Okay, I'm lying, I got a couple of blips while

resizing a pdf document in Acrobat no big whoop.

This is one great feature now I can wait for the 40MB iPod

to come out.

Graffiti (Palm) vs Block Recognizer (Pocket PC).

I started using Transcriber for entering text I was

heart-broken. I couldn't enter text correctly, fast enough.

I exclaimed "Hallelujah!" when I discovered Block Recognizer.

It allows Graffiti input. Great response time and nifty

special character entry assistant.

Synchronization. Yikes! I'm going to have to get use to this.

With Palm, 95% of all applications/data get Sync'ed via Hot

Sync in a pretty standard way.

With Pocket PC there are number of ways this could happen. So

far I have come across:

* Drag and drop to Pocket Device directory

* Custom app install

* For media, creating a Playlist in Windows Media Player

and then requesting a sync from within the player.

* Copy application to device and then execute to install.

I won't enter my contacts or other "precious" info until

I fully understand syncing with ActiveSync and without first

coming up with a back-up plan.

One sad item...I can't sync up with my beloved ibook Windows

only! Real easy with Palm.

Software availability: Palm beats Pocket PC hands-down. There's

tons of software for the Palm, a great percentage free. I'm

not really complaining I just need a really good version of

Tetris and I'm happy.

The 755 has a very nice solid feel to it. I wish the sides

were rubberized though. I've dropped my palm a number of

times, thankfully it wasn't fatal. I'd hate to drop a ...[undisclosed dollar amount]+

device.

The sync base for the 755 is built extremely well nice

heavy metal with rubber feet. Unit slides in easily.

Reading books on the 755 is a pleasure compared to palm. Bigger

screen, nicer fonts etc. Also, I found mBook Reader (freeware,

downloaded it from the internet) to be good alternative to

Microsoft's Reader can read Palm format files!

Things I'm not thrilled about:

During the lifetime of my Palm, I've never turned it on

accidently. The Toshiba's record button is the first thing

that gets pressed when I take the unit out of it's sleave.

I believe this button can be remapped to some other function.

After inserting a CF card (Type I) there is a smidgeon of

space left over in the slot. I'm assuming that type II cards

are fatter. I'm worried about this if I can see the

contacts inside the unit, then a little drop of water can find

it's way in there also (think rain I keep the 755 in my shirt

pocket).

I had to reset the unit, using the stylus hole a few times

already. My palm is very stable, as long as I don't install

hacks that misbehave. I'm not sure who to blame yet (Toshiba/

Microsoft).

After one week of use, I'm pretty happy with this purchase.

I just hope I can get the battery indicator issue and sync'ing

procedures squared away.

If you just need a device to keep track of contacts and maintain

your schedule this device may be overkill go for a Sony SJ-33

instead (...[undisclosed dollar amount]). I just bought one for my wife.

If you need a new toy to play with on top of the usual PDA functions this unit looks promising.

I found this handheld device to be one of the best so far. With its new Xscale PXA255 CPU, the speed is amazing (nearly doubled in some tasks) and it also uses about 30% less battery power (1.3V instead of 1.5V for PXA250). The new 3.8" transflective LCD makes it the largest and one of the best screens in the U.S. Market (not including e550G from Toshiba Japan. The reflective LCD screen was one of the major draw-backs for the e740.) To correct viking632, the e750 has 64MB RAM + 32MB NANO RAM + 32MB for the OS. Most of the issues e740 had (1% battery, ActiveSync drop) have been resolved for the e750/755. With the added value of Wireless LAN, USB, (VGA with expansion pack) and removable battery, this is the BEST Pocket PC in the US market right now (Q1 2003). Highly recommend!

Not as light, not as sharp, not as fast, and not as powerful as some other devices out there, this version of the Toshiba Pocket PC takes the features out there and combines them into a package that actually is better than the sum of its parts.

It's got the latest CPU and OS which, while promising a lot, are actually slower and less capable than they ought to be. It's got a new screen, while bigger and brighter than its e740 predecessor, is not as bright and sharp as other devices such as the Sony Clie.

It IS quite expandable what with its SD AND CF slots (important for someone who already has several CF devices and memory from other PDAs and cameras!) Not to mention the built in Wi-Fi which means I no longer need to carry a CF network card.

Only issues I have are that I also bought a couple SanDisk 256MB SD cards which seem to be incompatible with this device for some reason and Toshiba merely said to check the SanDisk site for compatibility. Seems that SanDisk doesn't certify this combination so be aware of that. Also this device still has a one touch record button that always gets pushed accidentally keeping the device on and taking up memory with nothing. They really ought to remove that.

Otherwise, it's probably the best Pocket PC out there.

The e755 has an outstanding screen, fast processor, tons of memory, both CompactFlash and SD/SDIO expansion capabilities, but the Wi-Fi is not quite fully functional.

When using the e755 Wi-Fi with a Netgear WG602 802.11b/g access point, the e755 handled the wireless linkup and communication very well, as long as I only configured the access point for MAC filtering and didn't activate either the 64 or 128 bit WEP. As soon as I turned on the WEP the e755 wasn't able to maintain a connection with the access point (which was within 10 feet and clear line of sight).

If you're looking for a powerful and flexible PDA with unsecured wireless access, then the e755 is an excellent choice, but if you also need to have your wireless communication encrypted you'd be wise to look elsewhere.

I bought my Palm Tungsten C two days ago and am writing this review on it. Which shows its pluses and its limitations.

Its pluses? I've got a wireless network (apple airport) at home and at the office. I've been able to launch the web browser on the PDA, log onto amazon using my email and password, find this page and start writing my review.

I'm also typing this on a keyboard (well, kind of!), which is a huge improvement on the old grafitti system, which is of course still included for those who got the hang of it. I'm also able to surf and type on a colour screen that is as good as anything I have ever seen on a PDA.

Checking emails and going onto the internet is extremely straight forward the only hitch I encountered is down to Apple not palm you need to select network password equivalent in the airport configuration to get the letters and numbers that make up the key you need to log into an encrypted network.

And though I've seen the reviews questioning the wireless range of the tungsten c, I found that I was able to log onto my network at home and collect my emails two rooms and one hallway away from the airport base station. Not as good as my airport enabled ibook, but comparable to the cordless phone I have at home.

The downsides? Other reviewers have already questioned the lack of bluetooth and if I didn't have wi-fi at home I'd be taking this product back. When you spend this sort of money you really have to be sure you are getting the most out of it.

You also need to be realistic. Yes I've been able to connect and access every site I want but as with any PDA the experience is not anywhere near what you get on even the smallest of notebooks. Having to scroll backwards and forwards to read what is on the screen can be a pain in the backside. As is typing in several hundred words, something that I am doing now. Sure it can be done but it will take you twice as long as on your PC, though I suppose it does teach you to be brief!

I've not played around with the documents to go feature just yet, but I would think it's the same there as well. Use it to write or amend short presentations or documents, but don't write your board report on it.

In summary this is a great product, light years away from the psion and handspring I owned previously. Just be realistic what you are going to be using it for and the limitations of a tiny screen and keyboard.

The Tungsten C stands out for me because of 2 things: (1) A nice bright screen and (2) Simple hookup to WIFI (and very good battery life to boot was surfing about 4 hours last night and only drained half way-my ipaq 5455 would have been retired after an hour).

The WIFI hookup is simple as easy as click and surf. Sometimes when I turn the unit on and attempt to access the web after not having used the device for a while it seems to hang as if it cannot find a WIFI connection. In those instances I manually search for a signal -however I would definitely like to see it automatically attempt a lockon to the last signal it used.

The things that are puzzling are: (1) Device lacks stereo output so if you want to listen to MP3 it has to be mono (2) Uses a cell phone headset jack versus a standard stereo headset jack (3) Makes an odd crackling/popping sound when you use the stylus on the screen [this HAS been widely reported by other users] that resembles static electicity (4) The keys are NOT backlit (5) The email won't display HTML (6) On my initial device the case in the lower right corner by the power button was loose, wiggled and applying pressure to it actually started activating some buttons [have seen this reported by other users though does not appear widespread].

I would rate this higher but for $... I think Palm should be able to get these relatively simple issues corrected. You may be able to live with them. Might think they are no big thing. My point is for the kind of cash these companies charge we shouldn't get something with these types of issues.

Just my .02 with these types of quality / functionality concerns I hope nobody at Palm is sitting around wondering why future sales are down...

On first impressions the Tungsten C is awesome. The display is the best I've ever seen on a handheld and the keyboard, although small, is well laid out, very easy to use and responsive. The software that comes with it is very good and the overall feel of the unit is one of quality. The WIFI capability was great and I had it connected to the Internet via my home wireless network in about two minutes or maybe less. It is very fast. Everything happens almost instantly. The 400mhz chip is probably overkill in a unit like this, but it sure makes handling pictures and other processor hungry tasks an absolute breeze. Lastly, I was impressed with the battery life. Palm have done a great job of squeezing so much life out of the rechargables.

Unfortunately, after just one day of using it my initial joy had turned to frustration. It wasn't really anything particularly big, just an accumulation of little niggles. You'll have read some of them in other reviews as they are things that everyone seems to have noticed. I find it very strange that the designers of the product didn't uncover them in beta testing.

To start with the clicking noise that seems to appear randomly on certain key presses becomes pretty annoying. At first I thought it was a setting in the preferences so I had a look and made sure the "click on key press" option was off, but I still got it. Then I switched the unit to completely silent, but it still didn't go away. It's only a little click, but once you've noticed it you can't help but think it is getting louder and louder. I've never encountered it on any other Palm device.

Another major gripe is the silly mono connection for the headset. This just seems absolutely crazy. Not only is it mono, but it is not even a standard headphone connection it is one of those plugs like you get for a mobile phone headset. Granted, this is probably what Palm were thinking of when they put that kind of socket on the unit, but a little user reacher would have told them that anyone buying a machine with 64 meg of onboard RAM and the ability to plug in addition SD memory are likely to want to use it to listen to music or audiobooks from time to time (in my case that means ALL the time). This is a MAJOR glitch and one I am sure Palm will look to amend in a future model at least I hope they will.

Lastly, although the unit has WiFi, which worked well for me, I felt that for the money there should also be built in Bluetooth. I was used to this with the Tungsten T and just assumed the Tungsten C would include it and so was disappointed to discover it didn't.

I've given it 3 out of 5 because it does have its merits a lot of them, but unfortunately the clicking, the silly mono socket, and the lack of Bluetooth really let it down badly. I'm going to be returning mine tomorrow and sticking with the Tungsten T.

I've expected for a year that I would soon purchase a new wireless Palm or Pocket PC handheld, and use it to access the Web. However, as each such device has appeared, I've been disappointed, usually in both the speed of Web access and the very limited number of usable sites. There is also the problem of ongoing cost within a year, using a wireless handheld for Web access would cost more than buying it.

After recently setting up a Wi-Fi access point in my home, I realized a new Palm Tungsten C might be the solution for me. Five minutes of testing at a local dealer confirmed that access is as fast as my SDSL link, rather than feeling like a 56K modem like the Treo 270, Palm W and Pocket PC cellular-based handhelds I'd tested before. I was also easily able to visit my favorite ordinary Web sites, rather than being limited to the few sites compatible with WAP.

I had no trouble setting the Palm C up for secure access to my home access point, and love the new keyboard even though I'm a quick writer with graffiti.

The screen is much brighter than on the Palm m505 I've used up to now, and Palm claims the battery will last through a full 8 hour day of continuous use.

It's a bit thicker than the m505, and a bit taller, but not enough to bother me. The cover is just like the one on the m505, and works well. The stylus is sturdy metal, and the Pilot pen/stylus from the m505 fits the C, as do all the accessories I have for the m505.

The high speed (400MHz) CPU and large (64MB) memory are real pluses, as is the compatibility with all the Palm software I've purchased over the past decade.

If you must have access anywhere, that is not yet possible with Wi-Fi. But for me, access at home, office, and some nearby commercial hotspot is good enough.

This is my fifth handheld. My first two were palm, my third was a Sony, and for my fourth I went back to palm. All four had 8MB of RAM and a 33 MHz processor. When I first turned on the Tungsten C I was amazed at how fast it was. When I clicked on an application it would instantly open, without that 1 or 2 second delay seen on older handhelds. This handheld includes 51 MB of memory, which is very nice for storing applications, movies (using the included Kinoma player), music, pictures and just about anything else. The display is one of the best I've seen, and the high-resolution is really nice. I like the Tungsten T3 expandable display, and was considering getting it, but I realized WiFi was too important. The WiFi is one of the best features of this handheld. I opened the WiFi setup application, it instantly detected my home network, I entered my WEP key and it was connected. Browsing the web on the Tungsten C is not anything like on a desktop or laptop. There is A LOT of scrolling involved, and many web pages take a long time to load, even with cable internet. There are also a lot of bugs in the web browser, and I've had to do many soft resets. I've downloaded AvantGo, which can be used as a web browser, and I never have to reset. The e-mail application, VersaMail, works very well. I just entered my POP3 mail account, and it worked. The keyboard is also a great feature. It is much better than Graffiti, and I'll never go back to a handheld without a keyboard. Palm includes Graffiti2, but I don't even bother using it because the keyboard is so convenient. One thing I've been hearing other reviewers complaining about is the mono headset jack. It would be nice to have stereo, but it's not that important to me. If I want to listen to music, I'll use my iPod. It works just fine for audiobooks, though. The headphones (sold separately from palm) look like ones for cell phones, however, they do not work with cell phones. Overall, this is a truly great handheld. It has a few minor problems, but so does any other electronic device. I've compiled a list of pros and cons:

Kensington Contour Pro Notebook Case

I've been using the my Contour Pro since mid June of 2004. I've mainly used it on my college campus, and I must say it's been great. I can easily fit my laptop, and books. In fact the pocket at the end of the bag (which is curved) is perfect for books! My only complaint would be for a longer strap so you could wield the bag across your chest (for 6' guys it feels awkward).

Great deal at ~60USD.

I have had this case for over 2 years, with light use (mostly when I travel). My 17" HP Pavilion zd7133 is a desktop replacement, thus, a heavy laptop.

Pros:

1) Lots of pockets and sleeves for cables, gadgets, and paperwork.

2) Nice shoulder strap

3) Case-within-a-case is nice. You can use the smaller case to go to a wifi cafe for web surfing. It has a handle and zipper.

4) Good as a carry-on bag on plane trips.

Cons:

1) The rubber zipper pulls break after light use. Now it is very hard to use the zippers that don't have pulls on them.

2) No good place to put the power brick. The brick makes the case very thick.

I'm not sure there is a better 17" laptop bag. Some hotshot designer needs to invent one that can handle the power brick while mainting a somewhat slim profile.

For non-business users, a padded computer backpack might be a better choice.

When I first received my carrying case, I was impressed. It seemed quite durable (tough fabric and hard contour padded back) then proved otherwise...

I _DO NOT_ recommend using this case if you have a large and heavy notebook (as are all 17" notebooks).

After a few months the padded shoulder strap which I thought was comfortable ended up ripping at the ends (where the pressure is when worn on the shoulder). Then I contacted customer service to get the strap replaced. While I'm waiting for a new strap I started to carry it everyday to work by the handles...then, yup...it broke!

Customer service needs serious improvement. I've opened so many support tickets with them but because of the language barrier (India of course), it was not a pleasant experience. I eventually got them to give me a refund.

I would give this a 5 out of 5 if they only improved the design: make the bag REALLY able to support the weight of a 17" laptop, huge power brick and books...otherwise, look elsewhere.

Especially one that has a sturdy shoulder strap and handles!

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've had the bag for about a week. It is one of the more sturdy-feeling bags I've come across -the computer is extremely well protected inside multiple nested padded compartments. We'll see how well it actually holds up over time. It has a nice bag-within-bag design, so the computer can be safely transported (around campus, say) using just the inner bag, without the weight of the full bag. Lots of other little storage pouches, etc, and enough room for some books or large files. But don't expect to carry your computer AND several large textbooks... I don't think they would all fit. Nevertheless, this is probably as large a bag as anyone would want to carry on a daily basis.

The downside: This bag is heavy and large. It puts a strain on the shoulder when carried loaded for more than a minute or two. Also, the inner computer sleeve is presumably designed to hold 15"-15.4" notebooks, but even with the elastic sides on the inner sleeve, it is an extremely tight fit for my 15.4" Inspiron 6000. Maybe it will loosen up over time. (I could dispense with the inner sleeve since it is detachable, but then the computer would slide around in the larger compartment, which I want to avoid. So I squeeze into the sleeve as best I can.)

I ordered this as a replacement for my existing contour pro 17. The picture looks right, but the product shipped is far, far inferior and is missing a whole compartment.

There used to be a separate top loading compartment for the laptop and included an additional sleeve. This one combines both compartments into one and omits the sleeve. I was very disappointed. If Kensington is going to create a different bag, then give it a different product number and a different name like Contour 17 AMATEUR!

I received the Sony Clie S300 as a gift. Along with the package came your normal sync cradle/battery charger (PEGA-UC500). What's practical about this cradle is that the battery charger is detachable from the back of the unit which you can take with you on long trips (assuming you don't need to synch so often). The ac adaptor's prongs are collapsible, making it easy to store. It has a USB connection to the computer, which is great, but the software I have is somehow a hack over the serial connection so speed is not impressive. Still, this particular cradle itself is fully functional in every aspects of it's tasks.

I bought my wife a Sony Clie PEG-S320 for Christmas. She soon came to be dependent on it, but did not 'sync' with the computer often enough. One day, she cracked the LCD, rendering most of the functions (including the menu) useless. We were looking at many hours of lost data.

Using the USB cradle, we were still able to sync, and then load all her data back into her new Clie. Without the cradle, we had no way to trigger the sync process. I would highly recommend this device to anyone with a 300 series Clie. The detachable charger is a nice feature as well.

Sure the cradle is fine for synching/recharging but after about 16 months of use, the charging lead did not make a clean connect with the cradle interface (or directly with the clie). I had to take apart the charging interface and force the pins out a little more then try and tape it all back together. I have to do this every month now since the pins gradually retract.

It's the only fault I've had in using the Sony Clie but I'll prob have to get a full cradle replacement becuase of it.

This is a great set of sony product. I love the wall adapter I can use at the office seperate from my hotsync craddle. This model is for the Peg-s series, specifically S360,s320 and s300. This will not work with the SJ series and will not work for the SL series clie either. So check your model number carefully.

I just bought a Clie PEG-SL 10, and this cradle is advertised as the right one for PEG-S series. WATCH OUT! does not fit into the PEG-SL10...though it is advertised as compatible for all PEG-S series. I am retuning it.

The same cover is at best buy for 40$. This case is great for what i need, having an Ipad around the house. If I was using the Ipad for anything else, like work or travel, I would probably go with something sturdier, but this is fine for my purposes.

I bought this product for me E61 but I decided to change phones over the holiday season before I received this. I got the E61i now and when this got in the mail I was a bit worried of it working or not. A word of advice, it is easy to apply, but apply it from the long edges, not the top or bottom edges as the size is so exact to the screen if it is not dead straight it goes on at an angle down the sides.

When I got the package, the first thing that made me happy was the size of this camera. I travel a fair amount on business and have a two-year-old daughter, so I always take a camera with me to talk to her at night and allow her to see me. The size of this camera is as good as it gets for traveling, and it also includes a great padded pouch for transporting it.

The other aspect of this product that I loved is its image quality, especially in regards to how well it adjusts the image based on the light and also how when you are on a Skype call and you move, the person on the other side can clearly see the movement instead of seeing a blur on their screen. I compared its quality side by side with my previous camera, which roughly costs half of what this one goes for, and the difference in quality was huge; making this a great purchase.

In terms of the software installation, the instructions were simple and clear and the process does not take too much time. The only thing that can be improved is that when you get to the point in which you are prompted to plug in the camera, while the computer is checking the configuration, the installation screen keeps prompting for the camera to be plugged in. People used to installing plug-and-play hardware will quickly realize what is going on, but some users may be confused by this and start unplugging and plugging the device.

In terms of using the camera with Skype, the integration is seamless. The only setting I had to adjust manually was the microphone, but this is straightforward, I just needed to go to the Options / Sound Devices and pick the appropriate audio in. A final thing to consider is that for the camera to work with Skype you have to close the Logitech Quickcam software, since the image cannot be used by both programs at the same time.

Overall I am highly satisfied with this product, and besides the minor problems mentioned above, the only other thing I did not care for was the stand. This camera works great if you are going to clip it to your laptop screen, but the stand provided for use with desktops is wobbly and does not help with image quality at all.

INSTALLATION: 3 Stars [Update process could have been smoother]

Out of the box, the package warns you in several places not to plug the camera in until you have installed the software. They even put a small cover on the USB plug with a message on the cable. Very effective. I turned off AntiVirus protection per the instructions and then installed the software. I enabled automatically check for updates. It said no updates were found. Then I plugged in the camera. After full install, it said updates were available and gave me a link to the website where I was supposed to select my camera, operating system, file version, etc.... I closed that link and found the "Check for Updates" link within the software (Right click on the Logitech Camera icon in the System Tray). That worked smoothly without intervention from me. It updated my software from version 11.1 to 11.5.

IMAGE: 5 Stars

The 2 MP camera produces very clear images that work great on Skype. Motion is no longer blurry, and the autofocus works great. The specifications say the autofocus will not work closer than 10 cm, but I find that if you move in slowly, it will work as close as 4 or 5 cm. This is great if you want to show something up close like an image from your digital camera or a label on a product.

SOUND: 5 Stars

The built in Microphone combined with the Logitech noise reduction software eliminated all the echos and howling that I expereienced with my previous camera. I no longer have to yell to be heard. I can speak in a normal voice, or even from across the room, and my sound is crystal clear. Flawless.

CLIP: 3 Stars

The clip for this device does not hold it securely. The camera can easily be pulled left or right if the USB cable is tugged even slightly. The rubber feet on the clip seem robust, yet it seems to be delicately balanced on the edge of my monitor. It doesn't fall off, but it is not a solid perch. The camera can be independently tilted up and down, but not left and right. There is no option for clipping the camera to the side of the monitor. The included stand works decently. It is made of three pieces that fit together and then the camera clips to the top. I placed the stand behind my laptop and it worked very well...peering over the top. Unfortunately, you cannot adjust height of this stand. I will probably not bring this on future trips.

SPECIAL FEATURES: 2 Stars

There is a thin button across the top of the camera that allows you to take still photos. I found the camera button was too easy to press while trying to adjust the camera. And since the camera does not clip securely, trying to press this button almost requires two hands...one to steady the camera and the other to push the button. The included software allows Avatars to imitate your facial expressions in place of your real image. You can also add special effects like hats, arrows through your head, or goatee and mustache. When it works, this is a really neat feature that my kids loved! But, even though it was neat, something in that feature conflicted with my Symantec Antivirus. As soon as I turned antivirus back on, turning on these neat video features forced my machine into an immediate shutdown! I got a BSOD followed by a hard shutdown that I haven't seen since Win95! My machine hung in a state of limbo. The power button wouldn't turn it off (software driven) but the machine as powered up with a blank screen. I had to pull the plug and remove the battery to complete the shutdown. Each time I turned that feature on while using Antivirus, my computer gave me the BSOD and performed an immediate and hard shutdown. Needless to say, I no longer use these special features.

AUTO FACE TRACKER: ?

This is a neat feature, but I do not find it useful. It really does a great job of following my face, but at what price? It seems like the other person would get seasick watching the background bob and weave as the software followed my head around. I think I am used to seeing the background stay put, while the person moves around in the frame. Anything else is disconcerting. Since I don't care for this feature, I did not rate it. You may find it entertaining.

ACCESORIES: 5 Stars

The included soft-sided pouch, along with the velcro strap for wrapping the USB cord are nice touches as I plan to use this for travel. Why don't more manufacturers offer these nice touches?

OVERALL REVIEW: 4 Stars

The video and sound are superb, and that is what really counts. But it seems that logitech could take one more step forward and improve the software to eliminate glitches with anti-virus, improve the software update process, and design a more robust clip. With a few minor changes this would easily be a 5-star item.

RECOMMENDATION:

After trying several different brands and models, this one had the best price/performance. Cheaper ones left me wishing I had better video. More expensive ones had me wondering why they cost so much when this one offers everything I need. I would recommend purchasing this item.

This is the perfect webcam for using with a laptop. The image quality is outstanding and works well even in low light. The cord is just long enough to connect up to a USB port without getting in the way and saves space when packed up in the tiny neoprene case that's included. Logitech even thought to include a handy mini velcro strap on the USB cord to keep things organized. There's a small and quite adequate microphone with the camera. The stand that is included with the camera breaks apart into three smaller pieces so it can also easily fit in one's gear bag. I'm a bit concerned it's not quite sturdy enough for constant assembly-and-disassembly. I can see using the stand quite a bit when attending lectures because it isolates the microphone from the sound of keyboard typing. I also own an Quick Cam Ultra Vision on a workstation at work. All in all, I'd say that this tiny webcam gives the huge Ultra Vision a good run for it's money on image quality and features, but is much more convenient for the road warrior. Logitech is obviously taking web cams seriously-these are the two best webcams I have ever seen. They suddenly make video conferencing, video Skype, and OneNote video notes a must have.

Update: A replacement unit has good focus from side to side. The focusing defect I saw appears to be unit specific. Check your unit for focus uniformity across its entire field of view to avoid a defective unit. Once you have a good one, the image quality is excellent.

This webcam does produce a better picture than the built-in camera of a MacBook. Yes, it works with with Mac OS 10.4.10 natively as a UVC device. HOWEVER, the unit I purchased had a focusing flaw. The left side of the image was always slightly out of focus while the right side of the image was well focused. As a result, the very nice lens system just could not get the entire picture right. This focusing flaw was not so noticeable at iChat's low 640 x 480 resolution, but if native resolution images were captured using other webcam capture software, the left 1/3 of the image was clearly out of focus. I believe the unit had its glass lens tilted relative to the CCD preventing it from ever bringing both sides into focus. As a result, the camera's touted superior lens was largely negated.

However, it is otherwise an impressive camera which delivers better tolerance to poor lighting than the built-in MacBook camera. The increased resolution CCD is impressive (in the focused portions of he picture) and gamma response yielded an image which conveyed greater depth.

If the entire image were in focus simultaneously (in full resolution captures) I would have given this using 5 stars. With the optical flaw, I can only give it 3/5. It is possible that other specimens may have better alignment between the lens and CCD, but without testing several more units, I don't know if the problem is a design flaw or simply a single missaligned unit.

This webcam produces nice sharp images and the automatic focus is fabulous! The colors are rich and very true.

It works great in dim light and well lit areas. However in my opinion it works best if the room is evenly lit,either all dim or all bright.When I first turned it on it was evening and my room was dim except for the desk lamp which was sitting behind the camera and this caused some over exposure,this was easily solved by simply turning the lamp off.

The sound is also nice and clear,even from several feet away.I have a very soft voice and sitting about a foot and a half from the camera I can be easily heard,which is saying alot considering I constantly have to repeat myself to others.

Even the pictures are nice,about the quality of a mid grade digital camera.It also comes with a stand if you don't want to clip it to your monitor.The stand is a light weight plastic and has a grip pad on the bottom for extra support.

All in all I am very happy with this webcam and reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a nice compact webcam with excellent resolution.

This product sems to work pretty well.

It is very small, came with a leather sleeve for travel, and software included. It has one big button on the scanner, but I do not know if it does anything, becasue it comes to life and scans anything you stick in there automatically (no need to turn on).

The software was a little crazy to install (had to install twice) but seems to work well. Comes with some warnings about not plugging the device in until the software is installed, but then it was unclear exactly when to connect the scanner.

This is USB powered so there is no AC plug.

Scans in black and white or color, just have to change the settings to color.

It is a little tricky to get a straight and complete scan. Helps to have a flat surface and smooth paper. It starts scanning when the sensor is triggered so if the paper is not all the way in to the feeder then you will miss some of the paper and have to try again.

My biggest grievance with this product is the software. You only get a trial version of their software! If it was a full version I would have given this product 5 stars. The trial version only allows one page at a time. The full version allows you to merge those pages into a single .pdf. Sending someone a 12 page contract on 12 different pdf files is a joke and far from professional.

If you merge these and send them with the trial version, the pdf will have "TRIAL VERSION" all over the front of it embarrassing as well.

The full version of the software cost $100 as much as the scanner.

Work around Set the software to scan into Adobe pdf format, get free pdf995 and then you can merge pdf documents for free.

Thinking of sending this back only becasue of the lack of ability to merge pages scanned into one pdf. This should not be a $100 add on, everyone is going to need to do this.

The work around is OK, but why should anyone have to take extra steps for this most basic function? Come on Xerox!!

I use a flat bed scanner at the office but, since I have started traveling much more, I wanted a portable solution to scanning receipts while on the road. This one got some good reviews and I liked the form factor. It will scan full 8.5x11 documents (common at hotels) as well as the small register tapes (restaurants, etc...). It's fairly quick, the images are perfect for submitting to my client, and it fits in my computer bag right next to my 17" laptop. The fact that it's powered directly through the USB cable is perfect no extra AC adapter to carry.

The applications that come with it are great, too. I love the drag-and-drop approach to building my single PDF of all my receipts. My customers do too. Very easy to work with everybody can read PDFs.

Only reason it doesn't rate a 5-star rating is because it has developed a habit of generating a faint line on scans wider than 2 inches. If I clean it before every use (about a 3-5 minute process since it requires multiple cleaning passes and test scans), it's under control and works like new. However, the line seems to continually recur and annoying. Not bad enough to ruin the scan but, still, it shouldn't be doing it at all. I may contact Xerox to see what they think but too busy just now to do so.

Not a complete replacement for your flatbed scanner if you need high quality photo scanning but excellent for everything else.

Highly recommended.

I bought this because out of all the portable scanners, this had the best reviews. It runs off of USB not requiring an extra power adapter, which is a plus in my book. The instructions talk about using a cleaning sheet, which I have yet to find. So far, cleaning has not been and issue. I always put it back in the leather pouch that came with it after each use, so dirt and grime probably aren't going to be much of an issue for me.

The reason it got 4 stars instead of five is the software, as most other reviewers have complained about. I am pretty computer savvy, and I had a heck of a time figuring out the issues with it. The scans were coming out dark and fuzzy in all formats. I went through the adjustment scanning process a couple of times and finally got the scans to come out clear. Because it has an auto scan feature, it made the process difficult.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit, and it comes with Windows fax and scan software. I find that this makes the scan process much simpler. Clicking scan instead of the auto scan in the provided software eliminates issues of crooked scans or off page. Now it is a breeze. Click scan, pops up in adobe, name it, save it. Done.

For the price, portability, and size, this is a great little product. If Xerox provided a more viable scan and edit software with the product, it would be a 5 star.
