I have just purchased the Orange DMC TS4. It is a vast improvement over the TS3 in many respects. I appreciate the full manual mode in particular. I like to take shots of the night sky, the stars in particular... the option to set the shutter speed up to 60 seconds is amazing.

The time lapse is also a marked bonus as well. I am a bit worried when leaving the camera in one spot for so long as it may be stolen, but so far I have made some amazing short films.

The overall picture quality seems to have improved as well.

The only MAJOR PROBLEM is that the manufacturer suggests that the watertight seals be replaced to maintain the water-proof integrity of the camera. They have not established what I consider a reasonable pricing structure for this maintenance procedure. To replace the seal you need to unscrew two screws on the door and replace the seal. Yet the service department for Panasonic now charges $180 plus shipping costs (both ways) to do this. I have spoken with the service department and they have assured me new pricing is being considered..so BEWARE!

One minor limitation I see with the camera is, beside the repair issue, the menu is a bit quirky and takes a little while to get used to. Another is to keep your finger off the lens, and keep your finger off the mike. If you cover the mike even a little while recording you will record both your subject but also the internal whizzing and other sounds of the camera.

5/8/2012 UPDATE.. Panasonic parts department says you can buy the "water packing" kit for about $32. Part number VUMG 1978.. call 1-800-833-9626 to buy this part. They say this is the part that needs to be replaced each year to keep the watertight integrity of the camera.

6/17/2012 UPDATE... I have just come back from a trip to Japan. A nice Panasonic repair person told me that the lens is prone to come loose and rattle when off. This is weird but normal so he says. The rattle stops when you power up the camera.

**I also discovered a neat feature of the panorama function. When you play back panorama pictures on the camera, when you push the up button, same as when you playback movies, on the camera it makes a movie out of the panorama. It is like you are there. Amazing!!

6/26/2012 UPDATE... Just spoke with Panasonic repair person in TX, USA and they have confirmed that they now charge only $50 to change all of the waterproof seals. (down from $180)

***be warned however, they said they will also look for other things to repair and if they find something the price for those repairs (not covered by any existing warranty) will be $180+.

**8/10/2012NEW REPAIR POLICY. I just spoke with Panasonic repair person in TX again, a new policy has been initiated regarding ts models. They no longer will question camera leaks if under warranty. They told me, at least for now, that they will be replacing them with new, not refurbished, cameras of the same model and color. Good news!! It looks like Panasonic has listened to all the negative comments and decided to do something about it!!!

I just got this camera and after setting it up which was very easy i am impressed with the video and picture quality, as far as the previous review about water safety warnings, when i turn my camera off and on total time for the display to show up is 3 seconds and with NO water safety warnings, i dont know why the previous reader keeps getting the warning. i have not tried the camera in underwater setting yet and thats why i am giving it a 4 star, but will be using it in Tahiti next month and will leave a follow up comment. Nice job panasonic for now.

4/22/2012, this is followup for those who have doubts about this camera, after using it for 2 days in Moorea Tahiti, i could not be happier, it has done a great job on pictures and videos, the camera comes on within 1 second and ready for use, i have used it under water down to 12 meters (40 feet) not one leak into the door housing, the seal is great, i clean the camera under fresh water after every use, and when i open the door to change the battery i wipe the wetness from the seat. i rate this camera a 5 star. i will load a video and pictures when i have access to free internet. cheers

I received the orange Panasonic TS4 two weeks ago for my birthday. My intended purpose for this camera was for my trip to Jamaica, which is where my sister just got married. I was in Jamaica for 1 week and took about 950 pictures. I returned home 2 days ago and after reviewing my pictures on my TV and new iPad, all I can say about this camera is WOW!

The reason I got this camera is because I wanted an all purpose camera that is water proof but can still take great pictures on a day to day basis. In Jamaica I used this camera for my sister's wedding, to go snorkeling, when we climbed waterfalls, went on a lazy river tubing ride, horseback riding in the Caribbean Sea, and everything in between. This camera took outstanding pictures a majority of the time, but did have some difficulty with night time pictures. The images came out a little blurry for some night pictures, so I had to play with the settings a little bit to try to improve the picture quality. Some night pictures did look great with the night setting, but others did not. So night pictures were a hit or miss.

For my sister's wedding, I used this camera for all the pre-wedding pictures as well as during the ceremony which was on the beach. It rained a little during the ceremony (which is supposedly a blessing in Jamaica!) and did not have to worry about my camera failing because of the rain due to the waterproof feature. All the pictures looked amazing.

For the underwater/beach pictures and videos, this was my first waterproof camera so I was a little nervous at first going underwater, but I made sure I followed all the cleaning/soaking rules to make sure it maintained its water tight seal. There were times when the lens would fog due to a quick change in the temperature (which is normal). I noticed it primarily happened going from the beach into the colder water. All I did was make sure my camera was dry and opened the side door to kind of equalize indoor/outdoor temperatures. This fixed the fogging issue withing 5-10 minutes. I think my lens fogged 2 or 3 times throughout the whole trip. Again, these underwater/beach pictures and videos looked amazing.

The GPS feature is cool because it records your location as well as the altitude/depth and pressure, but it did greatly reduce the battery life (which I knew it would prior to purchasing this camera). I bought another battery so I could easily swap out batteries when one would die. I'm definitely glad I did! At the end of the night, I probably used one full battery and about half of the other (I had the GPS feature on). I'm sure if I turned it off it would have lasted much much longer.

After showing my pictures to my friends and family, everyone was astounded that this camera was able to take such great pictures. Between the wedding pictures and the underwater/beach pictures, this camera did it all. I emphasize not just using the automatic setting, however. While the auto setting did take great pictures, I found that going into the scene mode and selecting exactly what setting you'd like for that particular image took even better pictures than the auto setting (especially for night images). I am 100% happy about this camera and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a great point and shoot camera that is also waterproof.

I purchased this camera to take on our honeymoon in May to the Society Islands in French Polynesia. I read through all the reviews of the TS-4 and TS-3 both positive and negative and thought I was smart enough to not have this camera break, I was wrong. I followed all the instructions making sure the seals were clear and soaking it after snorkeling (never more than 1hr and never below a few feet). 7 days into our trip, and arguably the most amazing day post-camera death, the camera stopped working.

When we returned from the trip I called Panasonic and was told to send to their repair center in TX. I received a call this week that the camera was out of warranty and it would cost $180 for them to start the repair and I would have a 90-day warranty with their work. So my 1-month old camera has now cost me 50% more and will have 33% of the original warranty. The best part, and I'll update once I find out, is that this $180 may not actually cover their repairs...this is just to figure out the repair plan.

Getting a hold of a Panasonic representative has been almost impossible. I've never actually reviewed anything (positive or negative) but I am so upset with Panasonic that I had to. If this helps one person avoid buying this camera or anything from Panasonic I'll be somewhat satisfied.

Update 7.5.12: Received a call two weeks ago that they could not fix the camera, but would send me a new one for an additional $40 more than the $180 to repair. They told me it would be a new camera and would have 90 days of warranty. I said a standard factory warranty was 1 year and asjpked if it was a refurb unit. They said no and that the factory warranty ran concurrently with the 90days and covered 1 yr. You've probably already guessed that the unit they sent was refurbished and has only 90 days of warranty. They also forgot to send the battery back with the camera...who are these people that Panasonic hires?! I laughed at the commercial with the US Soccer team showing the new "tough" iPad wannabe. After the team dumped the Gatorade on the coach all I could think of was "well that will never work again".

Buyer Beware! Panasonic will not honor their warranty!

I am very distressed that I am forced to post this complaint about Panasonic not honoring their explicit warranty on a Lumix DMC-TS3 "underwater" camera.

I am an experienced underwater photographer with three underwater cameras and 9 years experience. I have never had a case leakage or any damage to one of my cameras. I know how to care for expensive camera equipment at the beach and underwater.

I purchased a new Lumix DMC-TS3 "underwater and 6 foot drop proof" camera for my wife to use. She is also an experienced photographer and knows how to care for a camera. We liked the Lumix as an easy to use light weight simple point and shoot for shallow water snorkeling. One its first trip, only 6 weeks old, it failed after only 7 days of shallow snorkeling. It was never more than 6 feet underwater and at all times cared for exactly according to the manual. It was never dropped or otherwise damaged. I was sorry it failed so soon on its first trip but we did have our larger underwater cameras so I was not too concerned. I was sure Panasonic would replace or repair the camera and I would have been happy with that.

I returned the camera as instructed to Panasonic certain they would honor their warranty and advertising. I was shocked when they called and said the warranty was void because there was "condensation" inside the camera. I carefully explained that the camera was cared for exactly according to their manual and should be under warranty. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they would contact me in 3-4 working days. They never called or emailed me. I then called Panasonic warranty service two more times. Each time I got the same answer: the warranty was void and someone would call me but no one ever did. I am now left without a camera. I would never buy from Panasonic again and caution anyone else considering a purchase from them. If you do not care about a warranty and possible early camera failure then buy Panasonic, otherwise BEWARE PANASONIC. I have now found numerous other complaints on the web about the exact same treatment from Panasonic. This appears to be a corporate policy and not an isolated incident.

This is my second Moshi cover. I found the first one at a specialty Mac store in NYC that doesn't do online sales. When I bought my new iPad, I looked at all the products available here locally and at everything online. I even ordered one that looked good, but I was very disappointed when it arrived, and I actually saw it.

At that point I decided the only way to go was another Moshi case, since I have been so happy with the first one. Amazon had the best price and selection. Nothing else has the feel or texture of the Moshi, and the elastic strap keeps the iPad secure when it is closed. It costs a little more than several others, but it is worth the price. Go with the regular case, however, and not the higer priced one with the strap. That strap is a good idea, but the execution is flawed. It makes it hard to use the case, so you'll just detach it anyway.

I bought this holder for my new iPad after researching several holders. I prefer a fabric cover over leather, so this one caught my eye. This is a nice alternative to the leather and vinyl options, the color I chose is the tan and is a rich color, no fading or mottling. The feel is very soft and I found that after a few months use it has held up well, no visible wear and tear marks. The stand portion works well. If you're looking at keeping your iPad on the light side bear in mind this holder adds a bit of weight, but on the other hand it serves as good protection. I found that I have to reach under the rubber edge to operate my control buttons as it is a thick rubber and the controls do no react when you press over the rubber. For me, this has not been a great inconvenience, but for some it may be. Overall I have been very happy with this choice.

When I read the specs for this cover, it seemed exactly what I was looking for -the rubber inner case provides the protection of the form-fitting cases while the cover and back outer case protects the screen and allows for angled viewing/typing. Were it not for one shortcoming I would give this product five stars, as it functions wonderfully. However, the faux suede material that the outer case is made of gets quite warm in the hand if you are holding the case for any extended period. After a few minutes, you almost feel like your hands are clammy. I'm not sure if this will be a deal breaker for me and will lead to yet another iPad case purchase, or if I will just learn to live with it -as I said, other than this, the case functions marvelously -but potential buyers should be aware so they can make the judgement call themselves.

I have some older mounts in my vehicles for my older phones that used a swivel knob and I was hoping to just use this cradle in some way with those existing mounts. I didn't want to spend the big money on new OEM window mounts for a work vehicle and a personal vehicle, so when I came across these I was excited. Sure enough, all I had to do was use double-sided tape and put one of my old swivel knobs on the back of this cradle and it fits in my existing mounts! The back of this cradle does stick out a tad (1/16" or so) but that didn't effect my mounting. I love these... OEM cradle mounts are great!

Also, there is a small magnet inside these that when the Droid is placed in the cradle, it automatically starts the "Car Home" application (ie. car mode). I think if you didn't want this you could pop off a removable cover and somehow take the small magnet out (I may still do this, but car mode may actually be a good thing).

Of course, this cradle can't be used if you have any covers on your Droid. I used to use a bulky cover but went to an OEM belt clip and love it... I just have to be more careful about not dropping the phone. However, I like the feel of the thin Droid without covers.

I highly recommend these units!

I've owned a Brother PConly labeler for a few years now, but I ended up not using it much after the initial play period. The problem is, if you have to sit down and fire up your PC and the software (no matter how intuitive and sexy), it's just easier to use a pen, or nothing at all for that matter! After I read that David Allen, the author of Getting Things Done, concurred, I looked again for a more "ready when you are" tool. I highly recommend that you check out Brother's website; they have a nifty comparison feature that you can customize per model and feature and produce a PDF at the end great for your final decision process. For me, size and an auto cutter were the main features I was looking for, and that eventually lead me to this device, the little-reviewed 18R.

This particular unit is 2-3 times smaller in volume than all its brothers (non-intended pun here), thanks to its rechargeable battery. I was resisting this rechargeable business at first, because it implies frequent use (like a cell phone or laptop), but I warmed up to it. The price difference isn't that great (~$20 compared to a slightly lesser unit, the price of 8 good rechargeable AAs actually), plus it turned out that the little beast can go up to six months of occasional use without recharging, which is very impressive in my book. The NiMh cell is custom and labeled "Brother 18R"; hopefully there will be replacements in a couple of years when it finally gives out. I especially like the fact that this unit stores extremely well in addition to it being small: unlike the desktop models which sit flat on your desk and awkwardly occupy a lot of space no matter where you place them, this one actually goes into your library like a book, or upright into a corner of your desk drawer or file folder.

The auto cutter lives up to its name, so much better than manual. It cuts off the tape lead so you don't have to keep scissors around (you may find that funny, but re-cutting labels was standard procedure with my other labeler!). My favorite is the "chain mode". Here, you essentially delay your latest print in favor of a more efficient use of tape material. For example, if you enter "January", "February" and "March" and hit Print every time, the "March" label remains in the unit until you print something else or change your mind and hit the "scissors" button. This should address most people's issues with the wasted tape; it's as good as it gets with this system.

The device is very easy to use: while you type your text, it tells you how long your label is going to be. If you select borders, etc. the graphical display shows you the styles, and if you desire you can hit the preview button to get a WYSIWYG representation before printing. There are also a few "layouts" available, for example fixed-length (for your file folders), or two-line printing with different font sizes on each line (I find these particularly useful to label my Nalgene bottles with the content plus my name underneath). Unfortunately, the chain print mode (see above) doesn't work with those handy layouts; it always cuts off about 1/2" of empty tape. But I can live with it.

My minor gripe with this device is the low-contrast, non-backlit display (hey, since I'm running on rechargeables, I could justify the energy needs of a backlight). Also, the latch that closes the cassette department doesn't seem solid to me: a tiny plastic thing, similar to the one that broke on my other labeler. While I'm whining, I'd also like 360 dpi resolution for that really industrial look, but those printers are currently much more expensive (or PConly, which to me is now useless).

Still, this is the most useful, featurerich, and compact labeler that I've ever used, so 4 stars are deserved. Hope it helped in your quest to label those sock drawers :)

This unit is great! It's small, rechargeable, connects to the computer, has many useful formatting modes when you are using it away from the computer, and has an auto-cut function. It also has a chain printing mode that wastes very little tape. This mode selection is remembered until you change it again, no fiddling with settings each time.

The only (minor) complaint is that the charging dock does not have a USB port, so you have to manually plug it into your computer when you set it on the charger. And it's a little pricey, but if you use any P-Touch unit more than occasionally, then the cost of the tape will quickly overwhelm the differences in price between this unit and less expensive ones. And this one is nicer.

This system fits nicely in the hands. It holds a charge a long time. I owned another brother product. The batteries did not last long. I purchased the AC adapter which was about the same price as the Labeler. Then I was limited by the cord

This cord-free version with long battery life is great. And means that I can take the labeler to whereever the project is. It automatically cuts so there is an even border on each side of the label. I purchased this because it has the ability to connect to a PC via USB port, though I have not used that feature yet.

It seemed like I went through the tape that came with the system quickly. It may have been shorter (like a sample) I am on my second cartridge and it seems to be lasting a long time.

My only comment is that I think the borders on each side are long--forcing you to use more tape than necessary. But this seems to be how they all work, so I still rate it 5 stars.

I'm a long time user of the P-Touch system. My first was the PT310, which worked great. But with 6 AA batteries, as most of the other units have, it was a bit heavy. This unit is lighter, but not by much. The battery weighs a bit, but they didn't cheap out and use NiCad, they made it a mercury-free Ni-MH. That's much much much better, both from an environmental perspective and usability (no memory effects, partial charges ok, and much longer life cycle) thanks Brother!

The unit has an excellent feel in the hands and great QWERTY layout and other button layout you couldn't improve on that very much. As far as features, pretty excellent, and certainly more than i'll ever need if you include the PC-based part. So my concerns are somewhat minor this unit is great but here goes:

1) Brother absolutely should have designed the charger to work on the USB port. You cant charge as quickly, but that gives you a far better place to park the unit, and at least gives you the option to be un-tethered from yet another AC outlet.

2) when you print each label, even with the feed options minimized, there is about an ince of lost tape with each label. I can be less in the chain setting, so there is a workaround. I thijnk that they've found a way to minimize it in this unit,but they could do better. Overall, it is still better handled than my earlier unit.

3) Brother really should improve the resolution of both the print and the screen. That would not be hard, and an otherwise excellent product could be even better.

4) the number of symbols inherent in the unit is far less than my earlier model. Yes, you can import images from your pc, but most folks are like me we will generally just use whats in the unit. Please add more images Brother! My last unit had a movie icon, great for labeling DVD's at a rental and now i can no longer match my older labels since they dropped that and a number of fairly obvious user friendly labels.

5) Great to have 4 fonts in the unit six would've been better esp on a $120 unit like this.

6) Brother should have done a better design job with the charging base. It certainly should be more compact taller if needed, but the flared edges just take up too much space my desk/office space is precious and they could still make a good looking base (which could charge from either PC/USB or AC) which has a smaller footprint.

7) Small issue the blue font special characters above the keyboard are hard to see and too small so for example, its hard to find the comma "," in low light situations. Those characters should be darker/more prominent.

Otherwise, i'm very happy with this unit. Hope to have it for years to come.

This is my first labeler.

I kept seeing them in places like Home Depot and Staples, but I know retailers want to sell me what's most profitable for them rather than what I need.

So I went to the Brother website where they have an interview process telling you what to buy based on your anticipated usage. The PT-18R came up on top.

I was excited about this because I'm all for recharging rather than using and replacing batteries. I liked the option to plug in to an socket for straight electricity too. The length of the power cord is long enough so I don't feel restricted. I use a Mac, so the interface with a PC was meaningless to me and I won't ever use it.

When I first opened the box and followed the setup instructions, I noticed the battery is not Lithium-ion(Lion) but Nickel Metal Hydride(NiMH). Lion is state of the art and is unhampered by battery memory problems, so you can run it down and recharge at will. NiMH is last generation battery technology and while robust in terms of holding a charge, a NiMH battery will wear out sooner and may or may not have memory problems. Lion is more expensive than NiMH.

The book says to be prepared to replace the NiMH battery when it won't hold a charge anymore, or about a year. It also says the battery will lose it's charge if the labeler doesn't live in the recharger. So I'm prepared to buy a new battery from time to time, but nowhere on the Brother website is a referral to a retail outlet where a replacement battery may be purchased. And when I Googled PT-18R Battery, nothing came up . My hope is the battery is generic and someplace like Radio Shack will help me later on, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Wish me luck.

The interface works, but is clunky. Remember when the OS on a PC was MS-DOS? That's what this is like. After I got the hang of the file hierarchy with the operating manual at close hand, things became intuitive and I was able to edit and print labels in a smooth work flow.

I'm impressed with the variety of formats this labeler will render and I admit I'll never use them all. The PT-18R will do everything you want at home, and most everything around a business on up to barcodes, etc. I read in a previous review here someone was critical of the amount of tape used per label. This is easily adjusted in the setup menu before a specific labeling task. The operating manuel is complete, easy to understand, and covers everything about getting the most out of the machine. Use it.

The print quality is superb. The adhesive available on the tapes you can buy come in regular and extra strength, or two times the regular. I find if you're going to label anything other than file folders or paper based surfaces indoors, get the extra strength. Be prepared to get a head cleaning tape, especially if you use the extra strength tape a lot. The selection of tapes is the greatest in the 1/2 in. variety, so I recommend you start there and branch out into the other widths as the need arises.

Also, DO NOT BUY TAPES IN A RETAIL STORE. Buy them either here at Amazon or online at any of the several P-Touch label vendors for half of what you'd pay at, say, Staples. Tapes are expensive and that's how Brother makes their money, not on the cost of the labeler itself.

At what I paid here at Amazon with free shipping, I got the street price going rate. So far I'd say PT-18R is worth the extra money over the cheaper models because it does exactly what I want it to do in the manner in which I want to do it. This represents value to me, but might not to you. Your call.

The PT-18R is an interesting mix of serious capability, especially to those of you who want to interface with a PC, and dated technology. There's no doubt it will be discontinued within two years (go to the Brother website and look at the long list of discontinued models) and replaced by units using Lion power. But I don't care. By then I will have labeled everything in sight. Get one.

There's not much that can be said about a memory card. It works or it doesn't. This one works, so, pretty much that's that.

There is a firmware update for the iPAQ rx1950/1955 that fixes the power on problem when using an SD card. If you go to hp.com, pick Software & Driver Downloads, then type in the product name and continue, then pick Windows Mobile 5.0, you'll see a list of updates for the unit. Right now there is an (OS) ROM update, and a firmware update. The firmware update is the one that fixes this problem, but if you are planning to load the OS/ROM update as well, load that one first, then load the Firmware update. You should always back up all your data before applying an update.

I also had a similar problem when I didn't have the battery cover on and latched just right, but that's OK now too, as long as I don't drop the thing on the ground.

Having read all of the reviews, etc I purchased a Palm TX junk that was promptly returned (see review there). Despite the reviews here I have had great success with pocket pc devices & this unit had everything I needed. After almost a month I will not part with this device! Initially I had to download and update the unit which was a painless experience. Outlook synch's flawlessly and unlike the TX mail set-up and use is easy. WiFi works great and has better reception than the TX, connects faster and the connection is more reliable. The TX "soft re-set" several times a day and took forever to get going again the re-sets seemed to be more frequent when I used the web browser. Not a problem with the 1955. Not a single re-set. There is the wierd windows thing where you have to shut down running programs every so often(Start-Settings-System-Memory-Running Programs-Stop All)but you get used to that pretty quick!

For business use the memory is sufficient & the processer is pretty fast. The Office functions work great including running some pretty complex calculations in Excell. Again unlike the TX which has documents to go.

Memory card issue was apparently taken care of with the firmware upgrade as I haven't had aproblem with it & I use it to store documents, pictures, etc.

I don't use the media functions aside from viewing work photos so I can't speak to the complaints there.

For business users I have found it flawless, sleek, attention getting and very functional.

I have had this iPAQ rx 1955 for almost a year. I couldn't be more pleased with it. I have been reading other reviews here on Amazon that say that the iPAQ shuts down and needs to be restarted. Well, that's because the owners do not know how to use it. iPAQs are complex little things and they have to be understood. If properly used, they are sheer delight.

As soon as I got my iPAQ a year ago, I bought "iPAQ for dummies", read it from beginning to end and learnt a lot. I use this iPAQ to send email,write notes, as a calendar, contact list, as a reminder, love it when the iPAQ sounds its cute alarm!)and I even write my store list on it. I saved money on an ipod; my iPAQ is much more than that! I got a 2.0 GB SD card and have stored no less than 200 music files, four gorgeous games and dozens of big photos that I can now always have with me wherever I go. (This iPAQ can also store videos).The iPAQ synchronization feature (with your computer) manages to compress and resize big files automatically. The music sound is amazing, the photos look great, the games are fun and easy to play. This little cute iPAQ does so many things for me and offers me so many more that I am absolutely thrilled with it. A friend who has an ipod is considering giving it away and get an iPAQ instead. When I am not taking my laptop with me, I am OK because I can check and send email via iPAQ.

It is fun to use the handwriting recognition features as well as the voice recognition feature; this, of course, with the added software for voice recognition. I no longer need to use the stylus on my iPAQ to look for an address or a name. I simply talk to it and "she" responds wonderfully well. The iPAQ also had to get used to my awful handwriting, but it certainly did. It was fun at first to see the iPAQ trying to recognize my "r" and my "v". But it was all part of the learning process for both.

I have also stored two e-books that I can read on the iPAQ anywhere I want.

I recenty got a pair of Bose headphones that go great with the iPAQ. Now (with a little add-on) I am going to also turn it into my personal GPS. There is so much this little cute thing can do that I AM AMAZED.

I suggest the book (ipaq for dummies) be bought together with the iPAQ.There is too much this cutie can do and one might be lost without extra help.

I should start off by saying that I am not a major user of PDAs mainly because I'm in front of a computer most of the day. And even when I'm not in front of one, I'd prefer something along the lines of an Ultra Mobile PC due to the larger screen and more features. However, the UMPC is way out of my budget.

That being said, the HP iPAQ rx1955 has been a good investment for me. I chose this particular model due to the features as well as the price. I was mainly looking for a way to check my e-mail, tasks, contacts, etc while walking around campus. I also wanted something to help me keep track of meetings and appointments. Granted, most PDA's will do these things...but it was the extra features that won me over. The integration with Outlook and Windows XP in general is seamless. I also like the integration with Office and the WiFi works great. I can now take Office documents and spreadsheets of information from place to place and work on them without a computer.

Overall I have been very pleased. My one complaint is the same as many others. Namely that the iPAQ would freeze occasionally. This was indeed fixed with a patch released from HP.

A fine piece of hardware: small, light, good screen, excellent battery life, and does all the basic functions of a PDA (including internet, and Skype works reasonable well). The firmware needs an update to fix frequent crashes, but HP's tech support was great and helped me fix it in a few minutes.

The main defect is the Windows platform. The bundled software (IE, windows media, Word, Notes, etc) are ridiculously stripped down and quite useless in my opinion. If you've used Palm in the past, you'll wonder why Microsoft takes several minutes to Sync a couple of bytes of data with Outlook, or needs a restart every week or two even after all the fixes and updates, or can't let you password protect private records. Luckily I found excellent replacements for most of the software at handango.com/hp and opera.com for a total of about $50, and the machine is now very functional and I'm happy with it. Palm seems to have its own harware issues, so I don't know what's better or worse.

Overall, in an era when most electronic equipment is made in a big hurry and outsourced to the lowest bidder, this PDA does very well compared to others in its price range.

My original review was posted on 09/11/12 and needs to be corrected/retrackted. My poor opinion of this product was incorrect. True the battery life was horrible...but there was a reason. I am using this battery in my SkyCaddie SG5 and somehow the backlite feature was set on 100%. I discovered this because the unit kept getting quite warm during use. So, I turned off the backlight (it can be adjusted from 0 to 100%). Now the battery life is great, unit works great...at least 1-1/2 rounds per charge. In the interim I purchased a simliar battery direct from SkyCaddie thinking this would solve the problem...NOT. So, now I have 2 batteies. Not a bad thing.

HP 2511x 25-Inch LED Monitor - Black

Bottom line, this monitor is as good as you're going to find, anywhere near its price point. At the current Amazon price, it's almost criminal that you can get so much value for the buck.

Right out of the box, the 2511x looked like a 4-star monitor. While large and impressive, the color saturation was excessive, and it didn't seem very bright. For a few minutes, I was a little bummed out. Then I started experimenting with the controls, and this piece of gear suddenly went deep into 5-star territory. Here's what I did:

turned down the red, from 256 to 210

turned down the green, from 256 to 196

turned down the blue, from 256 to 240.

That straightened out the color imbalance. Out of the box, the saturation is too high and it's way too red/green. Just turn them down to levels such as the above, to get to the "cooler" neutral or slightly blue-ish tint that is familiar to most computer users.

then I set sharpness on 5 (maximum) from 4, and

turned the brightness to max,

and set the contrast up from the default 77-ish % to 92 %

Once I did all that, which took about an hour of adjustments and experimentation, the display was just mind-blowing. I used an iMac for five years, which is a great machine with a great display, and this is better.

The 25" size is a lot different than the typical 21.5-23". It doesn't sound like a big difference,but it's huge. 25" is a much, MUCH better size. It's not too big, and certainly not too small. 25" may be the perfect size for single-monitor office-work duty.

The unit is light, thin, and easy to move around. The angle adjustment is adequate -you'll be able to adjust it to the right viewing angle, although it doesn't do extreme angles up or down.

One thing that external monitor newbies (such as I, a few hours ago) may need to know: If you're plugging in a laptop, you may need to go into control panel -> display -> change display settings -> display, and then tell it to use only the external monitor (monitor # 2). If your laptop has a max resolution of 1600x900, and you have it set (by default) to "display on both monitors", it'll only display on the HP at 1600x900, which won't look good. You need to get that resolution bumped up to 1920x1080, which won't be allowed until you set the display to Monitor 2 and thereby free it from the limitations of your laptop's display. Of course, if your laptop already displays 1920x1280, then you won't have this issue.

I saw a few comments about not being able to find the power button or other controls. I don't get that. It's a little button on the underside of the monitor, on the far right, just where my index finger expected to find it. The adjustment controls were also self-explanatory; I never opened the online manual. I hit the menu button and got right to it colors, contrast, etc. Piece of cake.

The 2511x is an incredible value for the money and would be a good value at twice the cost. I believe that this monitor will significantly increase my productivity and pay for itself many times over. Highly recommended. With the caveat that I'm using it with routine office software and writing-based tasks; whether its colors are "true" and the unit suitable for photographic and artistic usage is a whole different question which I know nothing about.

This is my first try at LED display monitors. My 5 year old Samsung was getting a bit dim, so after reading a lot of reviews and looking at many monitors in stores, my first choice was the top rated Samsung BX2450. Unfortunately, there were too many problems with that monitor: The display was slightly tilted to one side on its stand, with the right edge about 1/4" lower than the left; no adjustable viewing angle; shaky stand; overly sensitive control buttons; and a very pronounced 'sweet spot' for viewing. So I sent it back. I read about the HP2511x on-line, and ordered it from Amazon to try out.

Mechanically, the HP is far superior to the Samsung easy assembly, secure fit of parts; optional wall mounting kit; clear instructions. The base is adjustable for tilt, but not for height. The control buttons are very functional and have a nice tactile feedback, unlike the Samsung. The four presets for movies, text, photos, and gaming are pretty useful. The menu system is intuitive, and it is easy to adjust the brightness down to 50 the screen was much too bright for my tastes when it was unpacked.

For black text on a white background, image quality is very good, especially when compared side-by-side with my old fluorescent tube backlit Samsung. Text is very clear and sharp, with no ghosting or color fringing on the edges. Even running the text at 150% magnification as default text size in IE7 it is superior to the old non-LED monitor. The black background screen on start up/boot is uniformly deep black, with only a slight amount of backlight bleed along the bottom edge. White background screens are bright and mostly pretty uniform. However, unlike the old non-LED Samsung, but like the LED Samsung BX2450, the HP has viewing angle issues, which are especially noticable on white background screens.

They are not as bad as the Samsung, and the sweet spot for viewing is more forgiving. But when the monitor is on the desk at the ergonomically recommended height relative to your eyes, the bottom of the screen has a blue cast, and the icons on IE7 task bar have brighter blues and washed out yellows, while the top of the screen has a much warmer look, especially with a white background. Standing at the desk while talking on the phone and reaching down to type something, the white background becomes agua, and the text is difficult to read.

Likewise, moving your head more than a couple inches sideways from the screen center will make the monitor appear warmer at the edge you are moving from, and cooler at the edge you are moving towards. Again, it is nowhere nearly as pronounced as the Samsung, but still noticeable. The only solution I have found is to elevate the monitor 2+ inches above the desk. This places the center of the screen at eye level, and improves the color and tint issues at the bottom of the screen. It is not ideal, but much improved for image quality. What this means long-term for my back and neck remains to be seen.

I have an ASUS laptop with LED that is even worse as far as this sweet spot effect, and have looked at a number of LED monitors in stores, and have concluded that this seems to be a characteristic of LED monitors better in some than others. It is interesting to note that at 3 different stores, the LED monitors were all at eye level or above, while the non-LED models were usually below eye level.

With movies or HDTV input from my tuner card the above issue is not noticeable, probably because I am not moving my head as much as when I am using text and looking at reference books, writing notes, or answering the phones. Movies/TV are very decent picture quality, with just a slight color saturation weakness compared to my Sony 42" TV. Photos are also sharp and clear, but it is somewhat easier to notice color shifts when moving your head around while using photoshop.

Games are very clear and bright, and usually so fast paced that the relatively small color shifting problem is not noticed. The relatively slow 5ms response has not been an issue so far on the games my son has tried on this machine to evaluate the monitor.

I should point out that my HP Quad core AMD computer is only a year old, and used an ASUS Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card when I purchased the HP2511x. I have since upgraded to an ASUS NVidia ENGTS450 TOP Graphics card. This sped things up in some applications, and perhaps slightly improved graphics quality and color saturation in other programs, but without doing side-by-side comparisons, it is impossible to say; the difference is minor, if present.

I can use this monitor, and the improved text quality is appreciated over the non-LED monitors I used or saw in stores. However, the sweet spot issue, while better than most of the other LED monitors I viewed, was just annoying enough to drop a star off of my rating.

I was about to buy the 2509m model from HP, which I really liked.

Just before the holidays I saw that HP released this new version of their 25" monitor and the specs looked good.

I ordered the 2511x from Amazon and ... it's a beauty !

The image is so crisp, and the colors are fantastic.

I was concerned about the brightness (specs rated it at 250 vs 300 of the previous model) but this monitor has plenty of brightness.

I own a Apple 21.5 inch imac, My wife owns a 27 inch imac. I also got a HP elite six core monster hooked up to a HP 2509m which I like. I got this monitor because of my current monitor for my PC the HP 2509M and it's impressive display.

Now I know the HP 2511 isn't supposed to look as good as my wife's 27 inch imac,but it does.I called HP Tech support and they told me this panel is a S-PVA display. IPS is supposed to be better than S-PVA, but by looking at my wifes 27inch imac, which has a yellow hue to the screen, the HP 2511 looks better, the whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker. No black light bleed, no dead or stuck pixels. Even colors. This panel just plain looks better.

I have this side by side in dual mode with my imac 21.5 inch and use this as my main display and i could not be happier. I would give this monitor six stars if I could.

I've been on the hunt for a good reasonably-priced LED monitor for a while (I won't start on this...), something that I will find to my satisfaction in its features and picture quality. I think I've found it. I mainly came to the decision based off the rating ratios, and with the knowledge that even highly-rated items can sometimes lead to disappointment. This one seemed to have the highest proportion of 5-star ratings, and it did have much of the features I was looking for: LED, >23", GLOSSY, few complaints about color and viewing angle, and high customer satisfaction based on ratings. There are actually very few LED monitors out there that are glossy, and I'm so glad this one is a glossy screen. I'll let you know that on my initial purchase, I was sent a unit that was somewhat of a disappointment. The screen overall looked good, but for some reason, the contrast at the top appeared to be darker than the contrast on the lower half the screen. This is ASIDE from the usual TN monitor viewing angle issues that usually has to do with color. Interestingly, the contrast issue was such that the top did also produce a more pinkish tint. It was kind of annoying even sitting 5 feet away at eye-level. I queried several reviewers and looked through what customers have noted, and it didn't seem like anyone had this problem. Some also reported pretty even colors throughout when sitting in front. I gave it a shot and had it exchanged, without any clue if the next unit would have the same issue (e.g., was it just me who was picky?). Lo and behold, my 2nd unit looks more like the one people are giving 5 stars! The contrast top to bottom is MUCH more even, without that pink tint at the top, and the whites look VERY GOOD throughtout the screen, much improved form the last unit. (Currently? The white appears 95-98% even across the screen at 4 feet away or more, and one may detect an extremely subtle pinch of off-white/yellow if you sit closer or if you scrutinize the screen for 1 minute). Unfortunately, this means that not all units are made the same, but I'm glad I finally ended up with a unit consistent with reviews AND satisfies my expectations for a monitor in this price range. So here I go with an outline of my review:

PROS

Excellent screen size for daily student use. I can sit back much further with less strain on my eyes and posture while still getting great viewing range at eye-level. Given that the resolution is 1080p, 23" might be good for DPI, but 23" is slightly on the smaller range, and I wanted a larger screen size coming off of my 21" previously. 27" would have been a good size, but then DPI would have been less attractive. It's a delicate balance here, and 25" is JUST right, for me.

Excellent contrast and brightness. I use about 80% and 80%. For reported 250 cd/m2 on this screen, even 80/80 is brighter than my "300 cd/m2" of my Dell Studio XPS 16 screen (which inspired me to find LED monitors).

Very good viewing angles for its class. TFT-TN monitors will always suffer the same issues, but not all suffer the same extent. I've definitely seen many models/many different brands that have varying degrees of viewing angle satisfaction. Yes, if you lean off center side to side, the further end will start to have a light yellow tint. But let's say you are watching a film/video, and u stand maybe off to the side a bit--you can still see what is going on and you may not even notice much distortion in color/contrast unless you really stare at the screen with scrutiny as you come to the center. If it hasn't bothered me, I don't think it will bother most users who are buying monitors of this class. Believe me, I've seen pretty bad ones.

White is more white, black is more black. The "LED white" is one of the main reasons to upgrade from a regular LCD monitor. The white is very good especially when you are on center at least 4 feet away. The black is a pure, deep black and smooth and consistent throughout the screen. No backlight bleeding, by the way! Makes black-background webpages and movies very neat to look at.

Excellent color representation for its class. As you may know, TFT-TN monitors will still have the issue with viewing angles. On center, the left and right are pretty symmetrical and similar/same as the center. Top to bottom, with colors that are not back, you will notice a gradual gradation of color as you scan top-to-bottom, but that is typical, and the issue is actually less on this monitor than on many others I've seen. Only IPS monitors can resolve this, if you're really demanding that. I'm not really complaining. :)

Sharp and crisp. Text at 80% contrast and 80% brightness is excellent. That's all.

Easy-to-use buttons. The buttons are actually located on the underside of the screen with labels facing you. The functionality is pretty easy to figure out and not complicated. There's a function to turn off the Power light if you choose to, but I like to keep it on, as it has a nice neon-teal color to it. When activating the monitor from sleep, there is virtually no waiting time for things to show up except for monitor-based prompt menu that says which plug is detected (disappears in 2 seconds or so).

Stable base and support. Just in case people wanted to know. The monitor will only shake a little when you're touching the buttons or handling the monitor with your hands. Otherwise, it is very stable.

Glossy. I'm a fan of glossy screens. I won't go into a battle between matte vs. glossy, because both have its pros/cons. I favor glossy over matte because: 1) In any lit room or with windows or whatnot, all my matte screens I've used experience complete screen washout. You basically can't make out anything because the light reflecting off the surface is diffuse and goes across the entire surface. However, with glossy, I've never been bothered by reflections, and even in bright lighting situations, the most you get is a reflection of that source, but it is localized and does not wash out the whole screen. Plus, I probably just subconsciously adapt to it and maybe move my head over 1 inch or ignore the light completely. 2) Glossy in any lit room seems to provide better clarity and richness in color/contrast. (In complete darkness, matte vs. glossy appear pretty much the same.)

CONS

It's not IPS, but hey, it's got deep black that is consistent throughout. For $230 (when I bought it), this is one of the best in the TN class that I've seen, and met my expectations. The viewing angle descriptions I described above.

Does not rotate and does not have vertical adjustment. Minor complaint, but I have my monitor on a stand so I can keep it eye-level. It would have been nice to have such features though.

You may get lucky and get a good unit. But you may also get something slightly disappointing. If you suspect that there may be some flaw or fault to your unit, it's probably not you or your eyes--it's the monitor. Amazon helped me with the exchange process very easily, and now I am absolutely happy with my new unit. This is a quality control issue that likely applies to any product you choose, no matter how good they reportedly are. But if I were you, I -wouldbelieve the 5-star ratings, and you should get a unit that meets those standards.

This is very picky, and I'm sure most people won't notice, but if you are within the range of 1-5 feet from the monitor and you look away the monitor but keep it enough in your peripheral vision, you might see subtle indication of flickering off to your peripheral vision esp with white background and dark text/lines. Not a biggie, I think it's normal for LEDs to do that (although my Dell Studio XPS 16 WLED screen does not). Just to be clear, there is NO OBSERVABLE FLICKERING when viewing directly at this HP monitor.

I tried to include commentary about features or issues that I did not see any other viewer describe. For instance, few will talk about the vertical viewing angles at eye-level, which for me is a bigger issue than side-to-side viewing angles. I'll just you know that this is the best TFT-TN monitor I've been able to find so far that is glossy and LED. You can expect high-quality from this product, and I hope I've been able to help you in making a decision when searching for a monitor of this class to purchase. My rating is CONFIDENTLY 4.9/5 for a good unit, and I'm not counting off too much for viewing angles, as I'm not trying to compare to IPS class monitors. Anyway, enjoy!
