Gateway DX4380-UR308 Desktop (Black)
- AMD A-Series A8-5500 processor 3.2GHz (4MB L2 Cache)
- 8GB DDR3
- 1 TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Windows 8
I wanted:
A big hard drive (1TB) since my camera is spitting out huge RAW files
At least an ok graphics card (AMD Radeon(tm) HD 7560D) in case I start to use photoshop on top of using lightroom
A decent dual or quad core processor (AMD® A-Series Quad-Core A8-5500 Processor 3.2GHz)
At least 8GB RAM
I've had it set-up for a couple of days now and I am very happy with it. Windows 8 seems to run really fast and smooth, I've only had IE lock up once on me. This isn't a Win 8 review so that's all I'll say. As for what's in the box, very basic stuff. The keyboard and mouse are wired USB which isn't too big of a deal, especially for the keyboard. I may buy a wireless mouse at some point but they work fine with no worries about batteries. Note, the video card only has a VGA and HDMI, no DVI, so I had to order a HDMI to DVI cable for a digital connection to my monitor which does not have an HDMI input.

For the money, this computer isn't bad but it has a few basic flaws that are very common to prebuilt computers.1. The case it comes in is an oven for the components. Especially the hard drives. Not only are there no fans for the hard drives but there isn't even a space to add a fan if you're willing to buy your own and install it yourself.
The tool-less hard drive bay that is meant to be convenient (and is) also is directly below the DVD drive so the heat has nowhere to go. If you put a hard drive in this space and run it for a few hours, it gets very hot. To the point to where if you take it out and hold it in your hand, it is very uncomfortable to touch. How hard is it to add a fan for the hard drive?
2. The computer doesn't come with an actual restore CD and a separate copy of your operating system like computers used to. Instead, they have recovery partitions on the hard drive. Which is fine as long as your hard drive never dies or gets corrupted or somehow erased. Not the kind of chance I like to take with a piece of equipment that's useless without a hundred dollars worth of software. I don't care what their excuses are, there is no excuse for this. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to use your computer and have peace of mind that if anything goes wrong you can simply fix it with a quick reinstall.
Of course, it's rare to find a store bought PC without the same flaws. If you plan on buying one of these, plan on buying a copy of Windows just to make sure you're safe. And if you're going to spend that much money, you might as well either build your own and buy Windows or have someone build you one and get a better PC out of the deal. I was not aware that this computer did not come with a Windows CD when I bought it. I kept it anyway but I wouldn't do it again.

I also got this during the Amazon lightning deal. I wouldn't pay the advertised price for this..it was worth what i payed for it. I too had issues with windows 8 but..found out there are apps out there to make it all look like your older windows platforms AND still enjoy the apps off to the side if you want. I wanted to get a major upgrade and get a system that my kids can game on..so far they are impressed. I have had no issues with it so far. It does have a expansion slot for an additional cd/dvd/bluray drive of your chosing. Yes, it does start up fast:)Want Gateway DX4380-UR308 Desktop (Black) Discount?
This one has plenty of pros:1. AMD A8 quad core processor. It's the latest Trinity design with great built in graphics. Unless your a hard core gamer, you wont be needing more here.
2. 1TB Seagate hard drive. It's a well rated hard drive with good SATA 6 performance and plenty of room for storage.
3. USB 3.0, Blutooth 4.0, and Wireless "N" networking with dual antenna's for great reception.
4. HDMI port for using as a media center, or hooking up to a higher end monitor.
5. Windows 8....yes this is a PRO! For those willing to take the time to get to know how to use it, it's a fast, capable OS with a lot of cool features. And Gateway includes a few bits of software(including an honest to goodness "Power Button" disguised as an app to help you along). Windows 8 works smoothly and with zero slowdown on this computer, and more than that you cant ask for.
6. Acer quality. Gateway was bought out by Acer a few years ago, and their influence is really shining through here. It's well made and seems to be ready for the long haul, not the case with Gateway's before the acquisition.
7. 8GB of 1333 DDR3 ram upgradable to 16GB, most at this price class only include 4GB standard.
Con:
300 watt power supply of dubious quality....as a precaution I installed a 300 watt Seasonic. Not really a con, just a paranoid precaution of mine.
This is one of the better computers you can buy on Amazon. It's specs are great, it performs well with Windows 8, and it's very expandable(pcie 16 2.0 video card slot, extra pci slots, two extra open memory slots). Yes you can also add additional hard drives(there's plenty of room where the main hard drive is, simply move it down a notch)as well as an additional CD/DVD or Bluray drive if you want to. If your worried about heat, simply add a few fans(Amazon sells case fans as well as hard drive fans), a cheap and easy fix. I can't more highly recommend this, it's a great computer for the money spent.First off very easy to use. After! 3 hours of playing with windows 8 finally got used to moving around on it. Threw max 16 G memory and graphics card. Works faster than before. No problem making it dual boot with second drive and win 7 on it. Guess not too many people know how to make it work....not even the tech support from the maker. Anyways i got it working just fine. Can't beat it for the price. If you want a computer for upgrades more than what i did then buy something else.

- Includes touch-screen, five-way navigation button and stylus input sources
- Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system

Great overall value for your money, especially if you buy online.
WiFi, Bluetooth, WM5, FAST processor!
Cons
Not SVGA, but I'm sure this helps the systems current performance! It's FAST! Might be a little pricey, but it fit my needs perfectly, and I'm willing to pay the higher end for a dependable device.
The Bottom Line
This device suites me perfectly. I understand that everyone has their own needs, but this has everything I need plus more. It's dependable when used as described.
Full Review
I have searched and read at least 15 websites for reviews on this product, and was not surprised to see several of these web-sites with the same two people giving it a bad review. It's my experience that many people start using the device and critiquing it only when they experience problems, and don't ever decide to consult the user manual to find specific instructions on how to perform the operation they desire.
The hx2795 is replacing an old 3600 series iPaq. I generally use mine for GPS related work and the hx2795 has performed better than expected for me.
Right out of the box, my battery had 94% battery life, and I used it off and on for two days after I bought it without needing to charge the battery (although the battery may not condition properly if you follow my example).
When not using my GPS, and use it moderately throughout the day, I tend to run at 20% battery life left after 3 to 4 days. Once I plug the charger in, it will have a full charge within 3 to 4 hours!
My IBM T42p laptop w/ bluetooth made for an easy and wireless ActiveSync. I synced my Outlook 2003 contacts, email, tasks and calendar without any hitch. I'm not sure why other people in the reviews of this device had problems, but as I stated earlier... read the directions. It's in there and tells you exactly how to do it, as well as tells you what to do if you do run into problems. Very detailed instructions, as well as on ActiveSync's website!!!
I have a linksys portable wireless router that I was able to configure the hx2795 against. Configuration was quick and trouble free. Internet seemed to be just as fast as using my home desktop computer.
I purchased Pocket CoPilot 6 w/ wireless bluetooth GPS receiver, and once again, worked flawlessely right out of the box.
Since I have had the device, I have had to soft reset only 5 times within a month and a half. And 2 of the times was because of incompatible Pocket PC 2002 software I was trying to load. This is very comparable to my Palm Treo 650 that I have had for a year as far as soft resets.
I did run out of battery a few days back for the first time. I bought a new RhinoSkin leather case and it didn't fit quite right, and was pressing down on one of the keys, leaving it on over night. But the persistent battery kept all my data safe, and didn't need to re-sync all my data. I turned on the key-lock after that incident.
Overall, this is a very good purchase! I would do it again.

I just bought this and have had it for a couple of days. At home I have XP Pro and at work I use Win2K. At work this worked like a charm. Just installed the packages from the CD and it was humming. However at home on the XP I had to play with it for 2 days to figure out how to get it to work and is still buggy. After reading all the forums and removing firewalls and playing with the anti virus software and reinstalling ActiveSync several times and trying different versions (4.0 & 4.1) I finally upgraded to SP2 and even that didn't work and was close to reinstalling XP when I started playing with the network connections and it started syncing ! I had to go to network connections and when you plug in you iPAQ you will see a new connection. You have to enable it, in my case to DHCP to get ActiveSync 4.1 to recognize the PDA. Everytime I reboot the notebook I have to initialize the tcp/ip connections for the pda.
Yeah, who would have thought that you have to setup the network connections (TCP/IP properties).
I gave the fix to HP support. Not sure if they bothered putting it into their database. Here are couple of things you may need to do besides that:
Make sure you have outlook 2002
and
Upgrade to Windows Media 10
So its not a bad handheld but this is not a for the technically challenged. If it wasn't for HP's bad documentation and technically challenged support I would have given it 4 starts. As its more like a mini computer and there's a learning curve and requires some patience. I got it for pda and GPS but haven't got there as yet.

(Originally intended title was "It makes the iPod look like a complete waste of $$$...harsh but true")I have been using my Ipaq hx2795b for a couple of months now, and at first it did have frequent freeze-ups and battery draining issues, especially when using the SD card. But once I updated the BIOS (ROM) to the latest version (you can find it at hp's website), everything works smoothly ever since. Also remember to use the latest version of ActiveSync (4.2 so far), and not the one that comes with the installation CD, and try to use the sync with MS Office Outlook 2003 instead of Office 2002 on your PC/laptop. For the above inconveniences, I'm taking one star off the rating. I believe that's about it, and you're all set to start installing tons of software on your Ipaq.
I use it literally for EVERYTHING (well, phone and camera excluded) -that is, agenda, customer database, ebooks, reference books, review powerpoint presentations, wi-fi, email, msn messenger, bluetooth, watch videos (you can watch entire DVD movies on it, after encoding of course), music (in my opinion it sounds even better than the iPod, was it the earphones?), games, anyway, you name it. I find the Windows Mobile 5 OS quite stable, and the interface feels pretty much the same as using the ordinary desktop Windows. The speed is impressive too. Battery life is good and it charges fast. The display is bright and clear, though I would have preferred a slightly larger screen. The fingerprint reader device is cool. I personally don't use it though, because it delays the otherwise instant power-on of the handheld, but it stands as a great security feature for sure.
Some recommended accessories to enhance your Ipaq are: SD card (i'm already using 70% of its 2GB storage capacity, so I'll soon be looking for an additional CF card; I think it's less cumbersome to have both cards simultaneously in the handheld than to have to switch cards using the same slot), an extra sync/charger/car adapter (I have the BELKIN Ipaq Sync Charger F8Q0003HP), a leather carrying case, and of course, screen adhesive overlays. Some useful or must-have software are: Adobe Reader for PPC, iSilo, Resco explorer, Resco photo viewer, Resco audio recorder, Resco radio, Clearvue presentation, spb Pocket Plus, Trancreative Magic Button, Touch Notes, Pocket informant, TCPMP the core pocket media player (it plays every format that the Windows Media Player doesn't, which are a bunch).
Overall, I'm very happy with my Ipaq hx2795b. For those thinking to own a handheld for the first time but have put off till now (like myself), this is the right moment to do it. The technology in handhelds, both hardware and software-wise, has reached to a level of reliable stability, that makes it worthy enough to try on one of these literally do-it-all gadgets.
Want HP iPAQ hx2795 Pocket PC Discount?
This was my first PDA, and I wanted to purchase one mainly as a medical reference tool. Having no prior experience with PDA's, I carefully read the reviews on various websites on a number of high end Palm and PocketPC PDA's. I was in a quandry, because the reviews were so mixed. While the majority gave favorable or so-so reviews of the various models, many were greatly disappointed and described horror stories of wasting days trying to get the product to work properly. In the end, I decided to take my chances with this top-of-the-line iPAQ model. (Actually, my model has a b at the end of the model number, which I think indicates that it has upgraded memory from the hx2795.) After owning the product for only a couple of days, I couldn't be happier with my purchase and can't understand the other reviewers who describe synching problems, difficulty learning how to use the product, etc. As I mentioned, this is my first PDA and within a day I had multiple programs installed and functioning properly, was using the WI-FI to connect to the Internet, and was playing music on the built in media player to name of few of the functions I had used. I bought a book on Amazon on using the iPAQ, and did not even need to use it to get this PDA to do everything I had wanted it to do. If you know how to use Windows on your PC, using the iPAQ with Windows Mobile 5 should be a snap because it is so intuitive and similar to the full Windows OS.
I bought a 2 GB SD card to use with the iPAQ, which is the only "must have" accessory I think you will need. The only cons I have found with the unit is that the sound quality with headphones is only mediocre, and the handwriting recognition (at least for me) was not to good. I prefer to input data with the on screen keyboard. After reading the problems described by other users, as a novice I was delighted to find out how easy and trouble-free it was to get this PDA up and running. Also, I had called HP customer service a couple to times to ask a couple of questions, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it did not take too long for a rep to answer and provide courteous and knowledgeable assistance. This PDA ranks near the top of the coolest and most helpful electionic gizmos that I own.
UPDATE: Although, as my review indicates, I really liked this PDA when purchased 5 years ago, I must now warn that it is seriously outdated and would advise against purchasing it if any are still available. Windows mobile 5 operating system is way outdated, and apps are no longer being programmed for the OS. The battery life is abysmal about half an hour with WIFI on. (The WIFI is 802.11B, which is an indication of how outdated the device is now.) The current purchase price of over $350 is a joke for a 5+ year old device, as current competitors such as the iPOD Touch or the Samsung Galaxy 4 are in the $200 range. In short, when I first purchased this device, it was indeed a cool gizmo now it is just outdated and ready for my drawer with other outdated devices I'll never use again. Moreover, it is my understanding that HP has discontinued its entire iPAQ line.Ibought this one mainly for medical use. After paying I started looking for reviews and was horrified to find out that it had many OS problems
I am not a computer geek and did not want to spend time bughunting. When I received the device was above expectations. Had Palms b4 but and can easily appreciate this one is faster, with longer batery life, brighter colors and a easy intuitive menu. No problem setting up and easy to sync. No problems with the OS so far (1 month of use)

I'm a little chubby, so having something clipped to my belt quite often irritates my side a bit, especially when sitting or moving. Usually if the clip itself is too big. I had a semi-generic case that I got at a Cingular kiosk at the mall and hated it. It wasn't cut for the phone at all, in order to use the phone I had to remove it entirely from the case, and the clip was too big, it poked me in the side and irritated me as I walked. Inevitably I'd have to remove it and put it in my pocket. The clip wasn't removeable either, so it added too much bulk to even my jacket pocket.
The pictures don't do this case justice. The 'screw' you see fits neatly and easily into the slot on the clip, and the clip holds it in pretty well, released by a simple thumb press on the button on top of the clip. The clip itself is unobtrustive when the phone isn't in it, I usually forget it's there. Even when the phone is in it, if I turn it horizontally to angle with my belt, I barely know it's there. The only downside is that the latch that holds down the screw isn't very stiff or sturdy and it doesn't take a lot of pressure to pop it out. Sitting in a chair or in a car seat can easily press it up and out. Normal walking around doesn't affect it though and that's enough for me. I usually take it off when I'm going to sit down anyway.
The specially-cut holds for all of the buttons and camera are very handy. I definitely feel confident that the phone is safe and at the same time easily useable. Even when I'm not using my hands-free Bluetooth headset, it's still easily manageable.
My one minor gripe is that the case is really designed for the standard battery. That fits great. Put the extended battery on it and it becomes a tight squeeze. Still useable, but the sides bow out a little and it's still not 'in' all the way. That being said, the lid still shuts and snaps shut snuggly, which is more than I can say for the generic one I had before.
Overall it's a sharp product, easily worth the cost. If/when I get a new phone, I'll definitely be back looking for one of these for it.

I keep my phone in my pants pocket all the time so this case does the perfect job of keeping the keyboard from accidental dialing and I don't have to do the awkward lock/unlock procedure multiple times a day. Of course all this comes with a sacrifice the phone becomes twice as thick. The only problem with my case is that the "screen frame" part seems to not fit right. Top of the screen ended up being covered by it and you have to tilt the phone to be able to see the top 5-10 pixels. And the bottom edge interferes with the navigation button (up direction only). Otherwise it's a nice, functional and elegant case. Can't say anything about the belt strap since I never used it.Friday, May 9, 2014

I have an older 8MB Handspring that came with a USB hotsync cradle. I forgot to put the baby-gate back up to prevent my rabbit from getting into my office and before I could catch him, he whisked by the cable to my cradle and it was neatly severed in half.I went to different computer stores that sold my model of Handspring a few years ago, and none of them could help me... I was stuck w/o synching capabilities... curse my bunny!
I was extremely happy to see that Amazon carried this Belkin sync cable. It's better than the cradle because it takes up almost no room on the desktop and can easily be folded away when not in use. Also a great asset to have if you travel and don't want your cradle to get crushed in transit.
Works like a charm!

PalmOne PalmConnect USB Kit
- Complete solution for connecting your Palm handheld to the Mac
- USB-to-serial-port adapter and USB software
- Palm Desktop 2.1 organizer software for Macintosh
- Manages and synchronizes date book, addresses, memo pad, and more
- Compatible with Palm III series, Palm V, and Palm VII handhelds
On the positive side, it lets USB based Macs (and PCs) connect to their Palm device, it's easy to install, and once it works, it works without a hitch.
On the negative side however, there's some complaints. It's too expensive. The Mac Serial to Palm adapter costs less than 10 dollars and this one is 40! The software is outdated. It ships with version 2.5 of the Mac software which will NOT work with OS 9.0.2 or greater. The box that it ships in seems like it's a fine size for this small of a device, but when I unpacked it, I found my adapter was kinked directly in the center instead of curled so there would be no wire breakage. There isn't any damage to make it unuseable, but if it were in that position for a long time, I'm certain it could cause a problem.
Once you get the adapter working, it works without a hitch. Problems I encountered and the fixes:
Q. Why does my Desktop not see the Palm when I try a HotSync?
A. The Palm may be corrupted slightly (mine came this way out of the box). Do a soft reset by inserting a pin in the hole in the back (it's documented in your manual).
Q. Why does my Mac freeze, crash, or stall when I try to HotSync?
A. The adapter ships with an older version of the Mac software that is outdated for OS 9.0.2 and greater. Go to palm and download the newest version of the Palm Desktop for Mac (v2.6.1).
Good luck, and happy Palming!

The product works just great. But the fact that I have to buy TWO connectors to get from my Palm to my iMac is ridiculous. I'm sure it makes sense to the inventory control people, but it is definitely not looking from the customer's perspective. My vote says -make a cradle and a cable with USB connectors!Read Best Reviews of PalmOne PalmConnect USB Kit Here
The PalmConnect USB performs exactly as advertised, and is utterly essential if you have a modern Mac (iMac, iBook, PowerBook G3, or PowerMac G4) as the original MacPac will not work. However, it does appear that they are shipping outdated Mac software with it. Don't install the software from the included CD, instead download the latest (and greatly improved) version of the Mac Palm software (currently 2.6.1) from [Palm].Want PalmOne PalmConnect USB Kit Discount?
If you're like me, and stuck with an antique clockwork PalmPilot (in my case a III) from the days when the HotSync cradle connected to the serial port, the recent trend towards eliminating serial ports in PCs (and the fact that serial ports disappeared from Macs years ago) is something of a problem. If you're also like me in not really being able to justify an upgrade to a more modern Palm or Visor because you don't actually use the one you currently have very much, or don't have a compelling need to transmit color images of your address book via a built-in cellular modem, the PalmConnect kit offers a way to keep your ancient PDA synced for a substantially lower cost than buying a whole new PDA.
The box contains a CD containing the appropriate software (I didn't use it since the Mac OS X Palm software is only available by direct download from Palm's site) and the converter itself. This, as you can see in the photo up top, is a little black box about the size of a box of Tic-Tacs with a rather short USB cable sticking out of one end and a female DB-9 serial connector on the other. Fortunately the fact that the initial market for this thing was iMacs didn't compel Palm to ditch taste and make the thing out of translucent puce plastic. It's plain, black and completely opaque.
Plug the serial cable from your cradle into one end, plug the other iend nto a handy USB port and that's about all there is to it. Really.
Since it's still basically a serial connection it's obviously not going to be as fast as a true USB cradle, and I'd personally have preferred (and been willing to pay for) a new cradle that had the serial-USB conversion built into the cradle base since it would have looked rather less clunky, but it does what it's supposed to, and I suppose you can't really ask for more than that. There are many bad reviews about this USB kit, but I decided to try it anyway. I have a laptop that has not serial port and a Palm IIIxe. Well, I went through the installation and everything went well but at the last step, it would not synchronize. I contacted Palm support and in a few hours (yep, not one day, or two days, but just a few hours) they sent me an email with the solution. And IT WORKED!.
Here are my suggestions to others who want to give this USB kit a try: (My laptop runs Windows 98SE, btw)
-Don't use the CD for the installation of the drivers... Look to the right and choose the PalmConnect USB kit software for your O.S.
-On the download page, they include installation instructions that vary a little bit from those included in the CD. Make sure you follow the installation instructions on this Web page.
-Before you synchronize, make sure that the HotSync software has Local USB and Local Serial checked. (This was the solution to my problem). To make sure, these options are checked, right click on the HotSync icon on the System Tray, and see if Local USB and Local Serial have check marks next to them. Now synchronize.
This should do it! :) It worked for me! Everything runs a-okay. :)

I use my tablet computer for training purposes in a railway, a fairly harsh environment for any electronic device. When looking for a case, I decided that the extra expense of this case could be justified if the product could stand-up to the rigors of my workplace. This PDair case has more than met expectations. It is very well made with plenty of padding, meaning I can simply keep the device in my work bag. The case does not provide weather protection, but the impact protection the case provides is excellent. The tablet is secured in place by a magnetic flap. All cameras, sensors and ports are accessible while the device is in the case.

Purchased this direct. Even though it came from Hong Kong it arrived super quickly. It is pricey, but I would do it all over again.I would imagine all of their covers are of the same high quality.
It fits my Iconia like a glove and all ports are accessible. I have to admit the Iconia was not my favorite looking tablet, it is now. Nice work, PDAir.

OMG...A case that costs 25% of the device that it holds? It's one thing if the device costs $50 but a $450 device with a $118 case is absurd....For that much I would expect an completely armored case that protects against drops, kicks, water etc etc....Saturday, September 28, 2013
NETGEAR ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (RNDP400U)

- First NAS system to be certified TiVo Compatible, allowing users to extend the capacity of their TiVo DVRs -
I purchased this unit to replace an aging Sun server equipped with a SCSI Hardware RAID array that I have been using at home for years and that has become terribly inadequate in terms of storage capacity. I needed major more storage and I wanted to make certain that it would be reliable over the long term and easy to upgrade as the need arose.
The OBE (Out of the Box Experience) was excellent. I just slipped the drives (2x Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST2000DL003) into the first two bays and plugged it in. I fired up the discovery tool and presto, the web management page came up and I configured the unit. It did take 8+ hours to format the 2TB mirror which I thought was a pretty long time.
Working my way through the menus I discovered the ability to add various Apps which NetGear calls Addons. The most valuable one was the ssh Addon that allowed me to ssh into the unit which as a Unix admin I was pleased to be able to do.
I setup the various shares and user accounts via the web interface and then scheduled rsync jobs to copy the data from my Sun/Solaris server directly to the ReadyNAS.
I also had a bunch of pictures and video on USB drives and found that they could be connected to the ReadyNAS and the files copied directly (using the ReadyNAS web interface) from the external USB drive to the ReadyNAS shares. Considering the GBytes of data that I had to deal with this saved me a bunch of time.
Once everything was on the ReadyNAS I found that I could then use an external USB drive as a backup device! I REALLY love this feature! It allows me to connect an external USB drive that I can then backup everything on the ReadyNAS to and keep that drive in a safe/alternative location for disaster recovery. It gives me the peace of mind of knowing that if the ReadyNAS were to ever fail I would have a complete copy of my files on a USB drive that I could attach directly to any Linux system or restore directly to another ReadyNAS.
The ReadyNAS also supports rsync which makes it very simple to setup regularly scheduled (from the ReadyNAS) backup jobs to offsite network storage. In addition you can schedule backups of your PCs directly from the ReadyNAS just using SMB and file sharing from each PC. This makes it pretty easy to backup any local files and settings from your PCs. Another great feature is the ability to make shares available using NFS so that any Unix/Linux system can mount shares directly from the ReadyNAS.
The performance is really very good especially when compared to my former Sun/Solaris with hardware SCSI RAID with high performance SCSI drives. It may be old but it is still very fast and the ReadyNAS performed 30-40% faster than the Sun server. Quite a feat when you consider that I am using the 5900rpm Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB drives. Power consumption is between 45 and 110W depending on the level of activity and this is just 15% of the power consumption of my Sun server and way less noise. The ReadyNAS is almost inaudible!!
I am also impressed with the DLNA functionality. The ReadyNAS automagically appeared in the list of source on my Tivo and WD Live TV boxes and all music, video and picture were immediately accessible on those devices. No fuss!
For those that are Unix nerds having the ssh app allows you to login to the console and you will find a pretty standard (although stripped down) Linux distribution. You can do any and all things that you would expect to do from the command line on any typical Linux system. I personally found it very useful when I was moving and re-arranging the tones of files and stuff because I was able to things much faster directly from the command line vs. using Windows Explorer or the web browser interface. Given the level of power that I have found, I intend to configure email service to fully replace the email services being performed by by Sun/Solaris system and once that is complete I will be able to turn off the Sun power hog.
I would highly recommend the RNDP400U to anyone who wants to have a solid, high performance NAS whether at home or at the office. The ability to have scheduled backup to a connected USB drive as well as network backup to other servers using rsync (whether another ReadyNAS or Unix system)and also to the ReadyNAS Vault an offsite data storage service offered directly by NetGear and bundled with the RNDP400U which provides a 2 year trial of ReadyNAS Vault with 2GB of storage for Free.
If you travel or want access to the stuff you have on the ReadyNAS Netgear provides web and ftp remote access and they also have a PC based ReadyNAS Remote that allows secure remote access to shares on the ReadyNAS without complicated router or VPN setup. Access from Windows and Macs are over File Explorer and Finder, so you can easily drag & drop files like you would normally do in your LAN environment. To use ReadyNAS Remote, you will need to install a small client on your PC or Mac and you're ready to go.
The plethora of file sharing and streaming protocols is impressive fully supporting just about anything our digital media world could ask for and if it isn't built in there are Netgear offered addons and a vibrant community/open source that has all sorts of addons available as well. It is in fact the vibrancy of the ReadyNAS community that I find is a good indicator of how successful this product is and how likely it is to be supported well into the future. The open architecture of the ReadyNAS allows it to be used for far more than just a file server.
After having the ReadyNAS in my home for several months I can say that I am very satisfied with it and have recommended to my friends and colleagues for their home and/or business needs. I am quite sure that anyone who purchases this or a similar/newer model will likely be very satisfied.

I had a 1 TB drive dedicated to music and video storage. In addition, I was setting up my audiophile home theater system and wanted to replace my iTunes 128k mp3 files with much larger lossless FLAC files. I was running out of space, so I started looking for a server to use as a media server. I was concerned about some of the reviews when I purchased this unit last week. I am pleased to say that but for a couple of glitches that I feel are pretty minor and readily fixable, this is one sweet unit. I am computer literate and relatively network literate, so I know generally my way around a router, and its functions. I have my Ultra Plus set up with 3 Seagate 2 TB drives on the Hardware Compatibility List. I figured that I didn't need the extra space yet, and the 3 TB drives would come down in price significantly by the time I needed to throw another disk in. First, installing the drives was a snap. People, READ (AND FOLLOW) THE INSTRUCTIONS! Follow the setup wizard and you will be streaming and backing up in no time, just like I was. So many problems with products are caused by not following the instructions exactly. After I finished with the setup wizard, I installed the latest firmware. All good. Then I copied all of my music and movies over from my desktop hard drive. All good. Fired up my DNLA compliant box in my home theater and there was the Ultra Plus, and I was able to stream very demanding 1080p movies with AC3 with no problems whatsoever, both wirelessly and using a Belkin Gigabit Powerline adapter. This product really delivers. There are tons of extras, such as emails or texts when there are problems, etc.The glitches: The Ultra Plus comes with a "ReadyDNLA server" built in. For reasons I still don't understand, when using ReadyDNLA, I can't see the subfolders that I added to the Media Folder, such as Music, TV, Video. Not sure why, but for me, it's a non-issue because my media box recognizes the NAS and the subfolders (not using the ReadyDNLA) and I can play media that way with no problem. I will work on the ReadyDNLA at some point. Next, the power button is illuminated with a blue light. After a week, it burnt out. Again, no big deal, since the server is hidden away anyway, and I can see it using the Raidar program that comes with the Ultra Plus. The final glitch is that I usually view the contents of the media folder from my desktop using Windows Explorer. For reasons unknown, once in a while Windows Explorer fails to see the Ultra Plus under the network tab. When that happens, the easy fix is to close Windows Explorer, run Raidar, click on "browse" and Windows Explorer opens up with the Ultra Plus folders displayed. Again, it is a glitch, but no big deal.
This is a great unit. I highly recommend it.This is the third Readynas that I own and never had a problem with any of them. I test one feature at a time and thus far they have all passed.
The GUI is always available. The Raidar always detects my Readynas. I loaded Orb and can access my Readynas and watch my home videos or listen to music from anywhere that has internet connectivity. Readynas remote (Remote VPN connection for file transfers)works great. I wrote some scripts that has my Readynas send me a test e-mail everyday or lets me know which files are duplicates. The Ultra4 shuts down automatically when the power goes out to my house (Ultra is attached to a UPS). Everything just works. I have tested all of the various RAID levels, rebuilding of drives, drive failure detection and all have worked fine on all of the models I have. My Ultra4 streams movies and music to my IPOD touch, laptops and desktops(Linux, Mac or Windows). I backup all my computers to the Ultra4 over my network. My Readynas sends text messages to my cellphone when the power flickers in my house or if an issue is detected on one of my hard drives. All of the features work...Just make sure you know for sure that you are putting known good hard drives in the unit. They also should be on the HCL (Hardware compatibility list).
Update (April 30,2012) : My Readynas Ultra4 Plus is still going strong. I continue to add photos, documents, etc... and the thing just continues to work.
I am still truly impressed with my 3 Readynas devices and I will continue to keep my precious data on these devices. I have standby fans, hard drives, etc... and these Readynas devices will just not fail.. I actually want one of my hard drives to fail just so I can see the rebuild process in action again...To all of you that had bad experiences with these devices, you just had bad units..By gosh even the Space Shuttle blew up..no technology is immune to some failed units. These bad units just need to be returned and exchanged for one that is good...You also need to put HCL approved, known good hard drives in these units.

I purchased this item after going through quiet a bit of reading/research. Used the readynas site for user's input, which I found useful. When I pulled the trigger, I knew that it wasn't the unit that fit one need but hoped I could manage with it. At the end this device's poor performance transcoding content on the fly was a deal breaker and I ended up sending it back. I basically wanted to augment my home media center, by using this device to backup content from my tivo and also stream to a play station and roku set.The tivo support seemed great at first, but then realized that it was limited. Tivo would only store content that didn't have digital rigths media (DRM) embedded, which ended up being very little help. The transcode piece was a complete failure with the play station and roku while trying to play 720p HD content from mkv/m4v files. It would play 6 minutes and then make us wait for a minute to play additional 6 minutes.
Otherwise the unit did what I would expect it do for a product in its price. Giving me 4 bays and an intuitive interface to manage/add applications, configure different services, etc. I was very disappointed that it came with a trial backup software, leaving me having to buy a license if I wanted to continue using it. Performance and speed for file transfer (mostly CIFS) looked great, so no complains there. I will be receiving its replacement soon (competitor) with a slightly better CPU and this one at least provides backup software client.ordered the seagate constellation drive(2TB) at the same time and although i checked to have everything delivered in one shipment it came in two(2).
After a fashion got it up and working. lost my initial share(logical drive) config. but no data. logins/passwords discription/locations a tad confusing. If i ever get to where i need more storage will buy same unit.
Thinking about buying?? go to manufact. page and learn everything there.

I bought this PDA case by looking at price of $3.99. I have seen better than this in my local 99 cent store. I cannot keep my PDA in this case because it has no protection on sliding up or down from the case. I preferred to throw it rather than destroying my PDA by keeping in this.Read Best Reviews of Targus CH071 Tri-Fold Universal PDA Case - Nylon Here
I spent about 2 weeks using this case as a wallet case combo, in order to get over first impressions.I've tried 3 different case styles now, looking for a good wallet/case combo for my dell axim x30. This one came closer than anything else I've tried, but the credit card pockets are still cut to tight, making it difficult to get things in and out. Also, the storage is on the trifold leaves, so when you fold it closed, that area presses in on the screen. Don't fill it too tight! It's not a space saver either , because the case doesn't fit the unit closely, leaving a lot of wasted space. My Krusell case (ASIN:B0002JDCQ8) plus my wallet together are smaller than this case. The closure is secure, but awkward.
My last point is a general critique of all such cases. If you're going to add storage space, you have to add it in such a way that the items don't press on the screen when it's closed. Pretty much the only way to do that is either to have a pocket on the back exterior that expands out, or an expandable pocket on the interior of a flap that folds over the front, hinging at the top.
In summary, it's worth $1.88 to see if it's going to work for you, but only if you're carrying it in a briefcase or purse, not in your pants pocket.

I only got this case because Amazon gave it away almost for free. I figured, for less than 2 bucks, I might as well get it. It's horrible in looks and design. If it costs more than 2 bucks, don't bother. At the current price, this case is a steal. Well made (Targus makes HP's cases which they sell for 90% more!!!). This one uses velcro to hold your PDA (could have a bit more grip), which makes it easy to use with different models, has storage for extra SD cards as well as credit cards, etc. The clasp holds everything in securely, if a bit tightly. For my HP ipaq 3115, it is perfect.....for any PDA that is much larger, I can't say. But for the current price, it is tough to beat! If you will be using yourPDA in outdoor settings or just want extra protection, consider an aluminum case. They cost 10 times more but will protect the PDA from more abuse. If this model doesn't please you, you are out very little, but I think it will!
