Corel WordPerfect Office X6 Standard Upgrade

I've ben using WordPerfect products for over 25 years. The ability to transfer PDF files into WP is a big plus. It also translates WP files into DOC files for sending to die-hard Word fans. I have also liked it better than Word because of its superior flexibility, speed and ease of use.

Admittedly I am a WordPerfect snob, as I have used WordPerfect (for business & personal uses) since it first came out in DOS format back in 1982. It had to be loaded on a limited basis due to the limited size of the hard drives. I fondly remember using "Dr. DOS" and those 5.25 floppy disks! It was and is, and will remain the best program that mimics the simplicity of having a piece of paper in a typewriter.....

Now, some 30 years later, it is still the best word processing program on the market. Why? Unlike Microsoft Word, it is not laden with coding, and can convert files better than Word. It also retains all of the keystroke shortcuts, reveal codes (incredible for editing), and rich macros abilities that make it the hallmark of word processing.

With the advent of e-filing, the need to convert documents to other formats, not suprisingly WordPerfect can perform tasks that Word cannot. So, it has maintained its viability while retaining it simplicity and its primary thrust word processing. It is a wonderful program for the creative writer, student, or those that simply need a program that mimics writing with pen & paper (or on a typewriter). Those with aging issues due to arthritis, or those that prefer "snail mail" will find this program to be a delight! Those same people who are also adventurous will find the capabilities of WordPerfect to be vast....and most importantly, not so hard to learn!

As a word processor, WordPerfect if my favorite by far. Just the macro capabilities and reveal codes feature make it much better than MS Word. However, I have to print out 20-page book signatures (for sewing into books), keeping the pagination intact, which WordPerfect will not do. I am forced to use Word, which will do it. I wish Corel would add that feature--then it would really be the perfect solution for me.

I've had X5 for a while. (Earlier WP versions decades before). It's been just fine, but thought I'd get the upgrade just for the eBook publish capability. Well, X6 didn't like something about my (registered!) X5 version and would not install. It just left me dead in the water with nowhere to go except back to X5. That was 4 days ago. Support says it's my fault for not reading all the proverbial fine print on upgradable versions. So $139.99 down the rain? It looks that way. I have been asking for days for return authorization. Nothing yet. Best offer was for me to spend an extra $99 and get a version that will not be an upgrade version. Well, it's such a minor upgrade, it was scarcely worth $139. I'm certainly not going to give them another $99. Especially now that I am boiling mad. I've wasted hours on this to no avail. My advice: use a free wordprocessor like Libre Office. It will open WP files now. X6 may be worth the money, but it's not worth the aggravation of dealing with Corel.

There are (at least) two important improvements in this version of WP: first, it allows you to have multiple instances running, which is almost essential in a multi-monitor environment, and very useful in others; second, it no longer crashes the printer drivers (this varied from machine to machine, but consistently crashed on mine [it was one of only two programs that did that]).

If you like WordPerfect--or if you're looking for a word processor that believes you know what you're doing and doesn't insist on deciding things for you--you will like and should get WP X6. Versus Word, WP continues to show that it doesn't have as many resources behind it, so there aren't spiffy new things like the ribbon (of course, the ribbon is a setback in usefulness to many of us!). WP is reasonably but not completely stable; X6 seems better than its predecessors.
