PalmOne i705 Mini Keyboard

PalmOne i705 Mini Keyboard
  • Slim, ergonomic keyboard slides securely over the Palm i705 handheld
  • Unique, one-piece messaging solution
  • Standard keyboard layout makes it ideal for fast, accurate data input
  • Recessed application buttons for quick access to e-mail, addresses, and more
  • No batteries required

The Palm mini-keyboard for the i705; put your thumbs to use!

Out of the package, the little keypad is nice and light and comes with a CD and brief manual to get you started. The software installs like a regular Palm application, running in the background on the i705 the entire time. You won't see an icon, as there isn't anything to customize, it's simply always on.

The first thing you'll notice when trying to slide the i705 into the keyboard is the standard i705 cover gets in the way. I'm not crazy about he cover as it is, but if you still have the standard "flap," you'll need to remove it and leave if off while you have the keypad attached. It's not a deal-breaker, just a minor nuisance.

The keyboard fits snugly with the Palm's base and held tight even when I tried to shake it off. It covers the entire graffiti area but it has all of the 10 (depending on how you count the up and down buttons) main navigation buttons. Additionally, a function key will get you all the numbers, punctuation and most of the other special keys. There's also a Caps button, that I never actually used...perhaps it could have been used as a back button for web browsing. The power button works well and controls the backlight easily.

Obviously the beauty of the i705 is the email and chat functions. While I found it cumbersome to reply to email messages with a lengthy reply of my own, this keyboard really helps bridge the gap. The keys are very responsive and easy to find, even with my large fingers. I am able to enter text perhaps twice as fast as graffiti alone. The AOL chats are now a little more meaningful and my emails more insightful now that I use the keyboard almost religiously.

I'd say the mini-keyboard is a must have accessory for the i705 owner. I've found it's greatly enhanced my experience with the i705 and makes the wonderful wireless functions exponentially more powerful. While the issue with the standard cover is prevalent, the ease of use and time savings over graffiti make the purchase worthwhile.

This keyboard is not worth the money in my opinion. It has a yucky feel to it when

you type on it and press the keys. Not very comfortable to use at all. It

functions ok and did not crash my Palm or anything, however I would recommend you

get the Palm Portable keyboard (the one that folds out) instead. This was invented

by a company called Think Outside and is really great! It's a better keyboard, and

folds out into a full sized keyboard, which really is much more of a joy to type

on. It's a bit bigger and bulkier to carry around with you but the times where I

would want the smaller Mini keyboard I would prefer to just use the stylus since

I've gotten pretty good at it with a little practice.

This Mini keyboard is just not worth carrying around because it's a pain to use.

When I'm out sitting in a cafe, I bring along the Palm Portable Keyboard and I can

write and send long emails with my i705. When I just need to write a short email,

or if I'm a passenger in a car for instance, then I use the stylus.
