rooCASE 3n1 Aluminun Case and Bluetooth Keybaord for the New iPad / Apple iPad 2 Wifi / 3G Model 16G

rooCASE 3n1 Aluminun Case and Bluetooth Keybaord for the New iPad / Apple iPad 2 Wifi / 3G Model 16GB, 32GB, 64GBI was a little hesitant to order this because it seemed a little too good to be true since it was only $68 from PC Micro Store. My brother has an early model of the ZAGG-Logitech version of this which sells for $32 more and it didn't come with the Capacitive Stylus and Screen Protector.

I was very relieved to see it first hand because it obviously is made by the same OEM as ZAGG. The quality and workmanship are excellent for the product and it setup in less than a minute working on my iPad2 following the simple directions that came in the box. It fits snug on the iPad so it won't fall off but not too snug to make it difficult to remove. I love the 17 special function keys. It came pre-charged enough to do the initial setup but I plugged in the USB cable that came with it and chagred the batteries overnight. My brother says his batteries last months with his casual use.

The keyboard is slightly different than the ZAGG as far as layout, The Return key is larger, the Delete key is smaller, the layout of the arrow direction keys are very logical compared to the ZAGG. The fold out stand I think again is a bonus on this over the ZAGG because it is physically wider making it a little more stable when supporting the iPad and easier to pull out.

Overall I am very pleased and highly recommend it since it is every bit the quality of the ZAGG-Logitech model but this was packaged with mine at the time of purchase a Capacitive Stylus and adequate screen protector. Personally I ordered a BodyGuardz full body protector to protect the exposed iPad back and it works SUPERBLY too. Get them both.

One feature that I would recommend they add is the magnet to trigger the iPad2 auto shutoff function which the ZAGG has. It would fit very easily under the space just to the left of the fold out stand and would automatically trigger the shutdown. I have a very thin and small rare earth magnet that triggers the shutdown but I haven't figured out how to remove the keyboard from the aluminum case without damage so I can install it. :)

I love this device and highly recommend it to anybody who is thinking about making a purchase!

I bought this instead of the pricier Logitech version mainly because the review above made it seem like the two were nearly indistinguishable. But after experiencing this one and the logictech one, I can tell you what the price difference accounts for. But first, this keyboard. Shipped quickly, it was bundled with an anti glare screen protector (didn't use) and a stylus. The stylus was great, I'd purchase that on its own, though the headphone jack attachment was too small and left it hanging a little loose. I didn't use the screen protector because I've since returned the product. First, the user manual misspells "keyboard." Kind of important when that's what you're selling. Also, it didn't say how long a full charge would take, and gave a very vague "few months of standby time" description that made me cock my head and go, "huh?" The impreciseness carried over into the actual workmanship of the product, as some of the padding lining the inside of the case was cut such that the glue was showing or did not follow the contours of the hard case correctly.

Pairing the device was simple, and the hot keys are actually pretty cool. But, something kept happening where the Bluetooth connection would break (the B icon in the top right corner of the iPad would go dim instead of a solid white when connected to a device) and I would have to repress the Bluetooth button on the keyboard. The connection would last for about 5 minutes of continuous use until the symbol would go dark again. Also, one time after reconnecting the two devices, my iPad did what appeared to be an autonomous restart (aka, it crashed), which I suspect was prompted by an unstable Bluetooth connection since it had never done that before (iPad is about 4 months old). When I put the iPad into the case to test the case function of the keyboard, it was incredibly difficult to take out the manual accompanying the product suggests that you hold the case vertically and pry it out "using two hands." This was frustrating, especially since the design of it made it look like you would be able to just lift it out of the side without a bumper (which is how it works on the Logitech product). Then came the really infuriating part. Already deciding that I had probably gotten a defective product (because of the Bluetooth problem), I took the iPad out of the case to find that the moving part (also different from the Logitech product) that flips up to prop up the iPad had scratched the surface of my device. Should I have used the accompanying anti glare screen protector before putting it in the case? Maybe, but then I suspect I wouldn't get my full refund back.

Edit 9/20/11: I was contacted by PCMicrostore about the problem I had with the product and they were rather nice. The woman on the phone told me she had tested the keyboard with another iPad 2 and did not encounter any of the issue I had making me substantially certain I had gotten a lemon. Great customer service that wants to make their customers happy. I'd buy from them again!

Nice keypad and reasonable cost. I would recommend this purchase. Letters are much closer together, but it just takes getting use to.
