Tried the Kodak 460 1st (not from Amazon). One was DOA and the other one had scan lines from the 1st scan and could not be fixed.

This one has worked from the start. Have scanned in over 200 pictures at my parent's house. Actually my 8 and 10 year old did most of the scanning.

When scan lines appear it takes about one minute to clean the sensor.

The only small issue is that there is no way for you to set the scan area. What I noticed was that it crops rectangles only which means if you are scanning the old instamatic prints that had rounded edges, the edges were cropped but it was like a 16th of an inch on each of the sides.

This is a good product to scan lots of photos cheaply. Much faster than a flatbed. This plus a netbook makes a fantasitic portable scan setup that fits in a backpack.

All scanners of this type will have to be cleaned frequently because the photos are going to have dust and other stuff that will get stuck on the scan head.

A few tips:

Scan directly to your computer and look at each picture right after it is scanned because after 75-100 photos you will have to clean the sensor because of scan lines. Better to know right away than later and having to redo a bunch of scans.

To scan irregular shapped photos or fix cropping issues(sometimes cause by dark backgrounds,etc) place a white piece of paper in the plastic sheath and put the picture on top of the piece of paper. You will get a large size scan but can crop later.

This is not a review of just the product it is about the marketing ploy in the tag line. It is NOT a negative and slide scanner. JUST A PICTURE SCANNER! However the unit is great I have over 30000 pictures from old 35mm, 126 and 110 file camera. And every one scanned perfectly. All my photos are now on Blu-Ray disc's and safe from degradation and deterioration of the paper and fading of time.

Hello TWIMC,

This product does not scan negatives, nor slides. I checked with the manufacturer,

and it only scans 5x7 printed images or smaller.

It does not even mention negative or slide scanning in the description.

The items that Pandigital manufactures for Kodak that end in a 1, like the P461, or the P811,

scan negatives, but products that end in 0 do not, such as, the P460 or P570.

I tried to get Amazon to change the title, but they wrote back and changed it like this:

Opened it up for the first time last night. It was NOT as easy as you'd think to set up, and it took forever for me to quit getting the blinking red light indicating it was not ready (error indicated a memory card malfunction, but there was none worked fine in my PC). Anyway, it scanned 40 photos last night, mostly well. You really have to "baby" the process as the photos/sleeve frequently get stuck 3/4 of the way through. You kind of have to pull them on the other side.

Today, I turned the scanner on to scan more photos, and 4 white lines appeared across each scan they almost look like they're left by rollers or something. Always in the same place on every photo, regardless of what sleeve I use or which photo. Read the manual, and the only suggestions are to clean and calibrate. I cleaned and calibrated multiple times, with no resolution to the problem. Since the lines run horizontally across the top 1/3 of each photo, it pretty much renders this product useless. Oh wait... I just tried scanning a couple more, and now there are lines in the exact same place on the bottom 1/3 of the photo scans. Have emailed customer support, so we'll see. After reading reviews on other Kodak personal scanners, it appears that the "white line" issue is a common theme.

Update: I contacted customer support via their website (as suggested in the user manual) on the date of this review (Nov 29) and received an auto email indicating I would receive a personalized response within three days. I almost gave up waiting for ANY response, but today (December 16) I finally got an email back saying "sorry, you'll have to call us." Two and a half weeks for that response? I have very little faith in this company.

This is a great little PHOTO scanner. I was up and running in under 5 minutes. The photos are scanned directly to the supplied memory card or, if you install the Kodak software, it scans directly to your PC/laptop through the supplied USB cable.

Scan speed is pretty fast and resolution is set at 600 dpi out of the box, although this can be changed to 300 dpi if you want to.

The box also contains cleaning tools for removing dust and dirt from the scanning surface and two flimsy plastic sheathes which the photo should be place inside in order to scan cleanly. The software in the scanner seems to take care of any alignment issues and crops the image to the same size as the original.

I am very pleased with this, especially as I got it on a deal for under 40 bucks.

Remember this is NOT a negative or slide scanner, but a cheap photo scanner, which is easily sufficient to save those old photos snapshots from years gone by, before their colors fade. If you want a high speed, professional scanner then obviously this does not serve you but given the cost it is a fantastic way to save those old photos, or simply digitize them for sharing with family members.
