iZel (Grey & White) - The Adjustable Stand for Viewing of Your iPhone, Android, e-Reader and Other S

iZel - The Adjustable Stand for Viewing of Your iPhone, Android, e-Reader and Other Similar Devices
  • Supports a wide variety of the world's most popular devices.
  • Adjusts for viewing your device in portrait or landscape mode.
  • Positions your screen for the optimum viewing angle.
  • Unfolds easily for travel and weighs only 1.3 oz.
  • Proudly designed and manufactured 100% in the U.S.A.

I've read reviews that say the vertical stand position is useless, because the back of the stand is rounded. That is incorrect, the back of the stand has a detachable piece and if you detach it, then it works just fine in the vertical position and you can press on it firmly without any risk of it tipping over. This is a neat product and a great stand.

I work at a desk. I have a bunch of monitors and other devices arrayed in front of me, but right in the middle, in the most valuable real estate between my keyboard and my primary monitor, is my mobile phone. It's even closer than my coffee cup. I spend a tremendous amount of time on the phone for work, and need to both view and poke at the touch screen regularly.

At the moment, I have the phone propped up against my KVM switch (a big, sedentary box that my monitor sits on). It used to slide down and fall flat on its back each time I'd touch it. So, I put a little piece of one of those rubber, mesh mats that goes under a rug on my desk to keep the phone from kicking out. Now it only falls down every other time I touch it. It's pretty clear that I need a stand to save both my sanity, and the phone from breaking.

After looking at numerous alternative, I came across the iZel and just knew it was perfect. It's small, adjustable, and can even fold flat so I can take it on the road when I travel to use as an alarm clock stand. It's exactly what I needed.

Unfortunately, I was wrong. The iZel is such a good idea, but it suffers from one, fatal flaw it tips over at the slightest touch. Now, to be fair, the iZel supports the phone in two positions horizontal, and vertical. In the horizontal position, it's pretty stable. Not great, but good enough. In the vertical position, however, it's literally useless.

I have an HTC Merge, and my wife has an iPhone 4 the latter of which is probably the most ubiquitous phone on the planet. Even if it doesn't work for my obscure, heavyweight beast, it should at least accommodate her popular, svelte device. In both cases, however, when cradling the phone in the vertical position, the phone and iZel tip over when you touch anywhere on the top 2/3 of the screen. This occurs for two reasons:

1. The top of the phone is cantilevered over the top of the iZel way too far

2. The third leg of the iZel tripod (back) is round yes, round

That back leg seems like it's purpose-built for tipping over. Take a look at the product photos, then imagine a phone that's twice as tall sitting upright in the iZel. Now picture touching the screen in the upper-right corner. TIP! Left side. TIP! Dead center. TEETER, TOTTER, TIP! The only place where you can safely touch the phone is along the bottom edge, where the 4 Android or 1 iPhone hardware buttons are. (Note that we were able to improve the stability slightly by prying the rounded foot out of the back of the iZel, but not enough to make it even remotely usable under normal circumstances.)

I'm really bummed about this. In the end, my wife decided to use the iZel in its horizontal configuration, as an alarm clock stand (she uses her iPhone as an alarm). Neither her iPhone nor my Android home screens rotate, but I guess it's probably OK, since she'll be lying horizontally in bed when the alarm rings.

Movaic, please make a new version of the iZel that 1) has a flat, wide base in the back for improved stability, 2), is taller, to better support vertical phones, and 3) is identical in every other way. You have a great concept, great materials, and great manufacturing. I'll buy another if you can make the iZel do what it's supposed to do.

BOTTOM LINE: Don't buy the iZel unless you plan to use it exclusively in horizontal mode but do keep your eye out for future Movaic products, as they seem to have some good, if immature (in a product lifecycle sense) ideas.

They have put a lot of thinking into this stand. It is well made (for what there is to it) and actually folds flat so it can be carried in a case or bag without taking up a ton of space.

I forget how the unit works but there is a piece on the back that can be taken out and turned around to give it more height, I think for a lower or higher viewing angle in landscape mode.

I like this stand. It is sturdy and has rubber or silicone edges so it doesn't scratch the desk or the phone. It also keeps the stand from scooting around the table top surface. The stand has several adjustible angles for easy viewing. I use the stand for a Samsung Galaxy S3 and it works fine. The horizontal setting is best for my phone. It allows me to use the touch screen without tipping the phone over. Although the stand will hold the phone vertically, it is less stable for using the touch screen. I'm going to order another stand for home use.
