Walking around with an uncased Kindle is a little bit like going to a wedding in jeans and a t-shirt. It's not illegal but who does it? You need something to protect your Kindle and maximize its functionality.
I purchased the black version of this rooCase to go with my new Kindle Fire because I noticed that it was much less expensive than the Marware case that Amazon had been promoting. I cannot comment con the color but everything else seems similar based on the product description. My case is not perfect but for the price I feel it is a good deal. It offers everything I could want: functionality, protection for my Kindle and a good price.
Quality: The quality is pretty good. The leather does not appear to be quite as good as the leather that is on my lighted Kindle cover for my Kindle keyboard. But it is still respectable and does not look cheap.
Functionality: Here is where this case really shines. Most of the other cases can only stand the Kindle fire horizontally. The rooCase can stand it horizontally and vertically. Both seem to work reasonably well. The multiangle grooves allow you to position the Kindle fire at a variety of different angles. This is an area where the rooCase would appear to be superior to the Marware case, which does not have any grooves to hold the kindle up and relies on friction according to reviews on Amazon. The makers of this product seemed to think of everything including leaving a small whole in the top left corner so that the case doesn't block the Kindle's ambient light sensor. The case is not perfectly stable but for reading watching movies and light internet work it holds pretty well. It is slightly uncomfortable to do more extensive internet work like sending a long e-mail but that is also related to the Kindle itself.
Protection: The rooCase should provide pretty good protection. It is not as thick as some of the other cases but there is a decent amount of cushioning and the cover appears reasonably solid.
Opening and Closing: One or two people have complained that the case does not stay closed. I have not really found this to be a problem. It uses magnets to hold itself closed. It is true that these magnets are not very powerful but they are sufficient to hold the case closed. If they were any stronger they might make it a little hard to open the case. So I believe that the magnet power is at just the right strength.
Weight: At 6.6 ounces it is neither exceptionally heavy nor exceptionally lightweight. The Kidle Fire is a tad heavier than the other kindles. But still, if this combination is dragging you down, you need to spend more time in the gym.
You may also notice that the case is shipped from PC Micro Store. If you call them or the company directly as I did, you might not have to wait the extra days for processing.I ordered this case and the similar one by Poetic. The requirements that I had for a case are as follows. First, I wanted it to be able to rotate between landscape and portrait mode. I also wanted the device to be able to detach from the stand while still being protected in its own case. And lastly, I really wanted a purple case.
While both cases fulfilled these needs, I decided to keep the one from Poetic instead. The Poetic case rotates between landscape and portrait mode by a snap. It is this snap that allows for the Kindle to detach from the stand (for when you want to just hold the device in your hands without the stand like reading in bed or something) . The RooCase attaches with Velcro. This seems ok, but I thought that in time it may wear out. And to be honest, I didn't care for the sound that Velcro makes when detaching and repositioning the Kindle, especially while quietly reading in bed while my boyfriend is sleeping.
The RooCase's ridges for keeping the Kindle Fire upright in either landscape or portrait mode are not very sturdy. They are more like "speedbumps" compared to the Poetic's actual deep grooves in the stand for the unit to stay in.
In addition, the Poetic case stays securely closed with an elastic strap. The RooCase has magnetic closure, which I didn't feel at all! And I want to be sure my case stays closed when shuffling around in my bag.
The RooCase's purple is much prettier than the Poetic, but I thought function and quality wins over color.
So I'm sending the RooCase back. I this helps you. I wish I'd had this comparison before I purchased.I admit that I didn't expect much from this product, especially at the sale price I purchased it for. Fortunately, the rooCASE Leather Folio delivers quite a bit for the price.
The velcro attachments are heavy duty, not the flimsy kind I was used to. The sleeve is more than secure. It takes real effort just to pry it loose. Additionally, the magenta is beautiful, not overly bright or putrid pink (Thank God).
Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and will buy from rooCASE again.
