I researched many top brands online for 4 hours and looked for reviews of this product before deciding on this 'unknown' brand. A search for 'genius sw-g2.1 1250 review' on the internet helped me learn more details and choose this system.
Thanks to the thoughtful mounting hole on the back of each speaker, I was able to place the speakers at head level on the facing wall rather than set on my small desk because the large imac screen would block sound travel. The nice-sized subwoofer sits on the under-desk shelf.
I am over 50, and this is the first product review I've written in a long time I appreciate a good purchase for my money, and I think you will, too.

I first found out about this item from a friend that lived out of state (so traveling there to hear them was out of the question, come on, travel 400 miles to hear $50 speakers!). I did the normal research, reading whatever reviews I could find and then found one in Maximum PC that gave it 9 out of 10 stars. I needed a set, and here, or should I say hear I am, and HEAR is the key word. Now before I get all pell-mell because of my excitement I want to start with the mosquito bites. The sub breaks down on a high bass demand at around volume 6 (out of 10). They are rated at 36 watts so don't expect the Beasty Boys to join you in person. If I really, really nitpicked I could find a few more things but I don't work that way, I put enough seeds in your head already. Now for the magic, these are absolutely the steal of the year! For few Washington's over a Grant you will move up the audio clarity ladder more rungs then a monkey on Red bull! I listened to "Mad Man across the water", "Clair de lune", Baba O'riley" and "Bourree". Now if I paid $150, I would have been impressed, but paying $56 (shipping included) I was transported to a time of wonderment (not quite Zen, but how would I know?) I'm not going to bore you with my limited requirements of great sound but, if you are looking to replace your Edison era speakers, you will not regret your purchase. As a matter of fact your friends will wonder why your smile is now "ear to ear"!10/6/12: Just bought my second pair, the amazement still hasn't worn off! I know this shouldn't be true on an inexpensive set of speakers, but I swear they get better and better every month. And yes I do have Swan and Golden Ear speakers, they are fantastic but also cost 6 to 20 times more! I actually listen to my Genius set more due to convenience.

Great set of speakers, at least from a first impression!Pros:
-Feel well-built
-Control center is a nice feature with solid, well-labeled inputs
-Sound is very good (used EQ to boost the midrange a bit but no big deal)
-Bass sounds good at about 60% setting (in my opinion)
Cons:
-Headphone jack on my set is tight (takes two hands to plug headphones in need to hold the control center)
-There is a very small amount of sound "leakage" when headphones are plugged in, but it shouldn't be noticeable to anyone around you
-Cables could be a tad bit short if you put the control center, say, on top of the PC tower by your feet
Overall I would definitely recommend these speakers.
UPDATE:
Still four stars, but the sound leaking was noticeable by my roommate when the room is relatively quiet.
ANOTHER UPDATE:
Started using both sets of inputs (RCA and 3.5mm). The speakers default to 3.5mm input if there is one plugged in, so I have to unplug the cord to listen to anything from the other (RCA) input. Not a big deal, but maybe something that could be improved upon in the next version of these speakers (which I would definitely consider buying).

I bought my speakers from WalMart because the Amazon price was not competitive. I see now that they've dropped their price. Sigh ... I prefer Amazon, but sometimes their pricing practices are frustrating. The speakers themselves provide great sound for the price. They were easy to set up and I really like the control box which has an on/off-volume control, a bass control, and headphone and microphone inputs. The sub-woofer does a good job. Depending on the type of sound/music, the satellite speakers are a little shrill for my taste. I got around the problem by pointing them about 45 degrees off-axis so they were not pointing directly into my ears. I suppose I could use an equalizer to try and eliminate the problem also. Why didn't I give the speaker set at least four stars? Because the LED on the front of the control box is blindingly bright. In a dark room with only the computer monitor providing light, the brightness of the LED is glaring and incredibly annoying. I put a piece of black electrical tape over the LED and I can still see light through the tape! Also, the satellite speakers have no protection for the speaker cones. Probably not a big issue, but one does need to be careful that nothing touches or hits them.Much like everyone else has said, these little babies sound really great. Clear, crisp, nice bass; yea, there's no reason to turn the bass knob beyond 45% unless you're musically challenged. They have such a nice, rich full sound.I was actually just about to pull the trigger on the Klipsch 2.1 set (~$150). Listened to them at BestBuy and they sounded great. Came back 2 weeks later to buy them, and one speaker wasn't working on their display. Swapped the wires and realized the amp wasn't working, speaker was fine. Decided to hold off, came to Amazon and read the reviews only to find that those are full of problems.
So I started searching and came across these, read the reviews, including the one on MaximumPC, and I was sold. Just showed up today and I'm very impressed, especially for the price! As others have stated here and elsewhere, they're intended to be near field listening, not to fill a living room..but they fill a bedroom wonderfully and sound simply fantastic!
